CULT OF OCCULT / GRIM VAN DOOM

    Split

    [engl]
"The split album by the sludge bands Cult Of Occult and Grim Van Doom starkly contrast the two very different approaches that the two bands bring to the same genre. But, if anything, that contrast grabs the listener. Cult Of Occult’s half of the album is one, twenty-two minute long track titled “Black Sea”. It rumbles like a distant demon patiently clawing its way out from hell, one massive handful of earth at a time. Plump, earthy bass tones, ominous, cymbal-heavy drumming, hellishly guttural vocals and filthy guitar distortion are set to a tempo that makes Sleep look like a grindcore band. All of these elements remain constant throughout the twenty-two minutes of “Black Sea”, giving the song an endless, trance-inducing feel. The half of the album given to German quarter Grim Van Doom is rather different. Containing three songs and a brief interlude, Grim Van Doom’s side of the album is like a punch in the face from a spiked, steel gauntlet. While all three song’s on Grim Van Doom’s side of the album cross over the five minute mark, there is still a feeling of very little fat on them; they are all lean, brutish works of harsh sludge that churn your stomach and make the marrow of your bones tremble. Pungent tones grate against your eardrums as they doll out riffs that sound as if they had been written by someone who had spent the last two decades fuming at past transgressions and plotting revenge.

    ENISUM

    samoht nara

    [engl]
Enisum is an Italian atmospheric black metal band from Susa Valley (Val di Susa), the longest valley of Italian Alps, near Turin. They took their name from a local mountain, since Enisum is the anagram Musinè mountain, spelled backwards. The band was formed in 2006 by Lys as his personal project and self-released several demos, without any proper distribution. Finally in 2014 they signed to Dusktone label and in October 2014 their first professional full-length album entitled “Samoht Nara” was released. The band labels its music as Arpitanian black metal, a term that reveals the influences from Cascadian black metal in their sound and the significance of their homeland’s nature in their inspiration. Arpitania is a wide territory, including regions of Italy, France and Switzerland, where the Arpitan language is spoken or was used in the past. In “Samoht Nara“, Lys has the help of Leynir in bass and Epheliin in female vocals. This is the first work from the band I am listening to and I actually see it as their debut album. Enisum play melancholic nature-inspired black metal, with pagan black metal influences and post-metal references in their dark nostalgic atmosphere. Their music is based completely on their wonderful guitars and vocals, without any synths or folk instruments.

    WOE

a spell for the death of man

    [engl]
"The realization strikes quickly; A Spell For The Death of Man is an atypical force. The haunting, oddly naked guitar that opens the record--perfectly painted in the "Solitude" referenced in the track's title-- is stark. Desolate. Profound, even. Mostly, it's real. A single guitar. Two minutes of truth or consequences. That's all that Woe needs to bury the seed. The seed grows. That solitary guitar morphs into a fiery wall of blasting and trem--nothing special--but halfway in, man...the violent revolution begins. Woe's manipulator, Xos, breaks the song open, driving it into a storm of dust with thick riffage and insane drumming. This is full-on, fuck-you hitting, turning the tide into a headbanging, jawbreaking tsunami of blackness. A Spell... is absolutely massive, wreaking havoc in a manner that few (if any) USBM bands have previous. Thrusting mightly, like a craggy Nightside Eclipse encrusted in crumbling punk nihilism, this album rarely relents. As the work of a single man, A Spell... is a nearly-obsessive vision of destruction (as well as its cathartic wake), but is devoid of theatrics and posturing. Xos' screams of vitriol fully embace the human/animal primalism that condemns our very existence, and his command of the riff is as organic as it is supreme.

    VOID OMNIA

    dying light

[engl] Void Omnia is a five-member black metal outfit from Oakland, USA, created in 2013 and bringing together former members of Apocryphon, Mutilation Rites and Tombs among others. The band has released a demo in 2014 and “Dying Light” is its first full-length album, available via Vendetta Records. Void Omnia is, in terms of atmosphere, one of those bands that I like to call the “third path“. I am talking about those acts which although are diligent students of both classic diabolical Scandinavian sound and the naturalistic US and Canadian black metal, their own atmosphere is not built with eerie, naked 90’s riffs nor with ambient and natural sound themes. It’s rather based on well-written and well-played guitar riffs that create a sense of melancholic paranoia, a constant state of emotional over-stimulation. VUKARI

    divination

    [engl]
Assuming, then, that “atmospheric” simply refers to a specific swelling, epic mood conjured by layers of rhythms and relentlessly climactic songwriting that corresponds to yet enhances distended pangs of neutral emotions, neither nihilistic nor depressive, then Vukari has indeed succeeded in this endeavor. The postmodern textures surprisingly add much-needed depth to the sound, which one might not even realize until the disc finishes spinning, which tells us that these influences are so smartly blended in that the overarching picture isn’t meant to be dismantled for further inspection. Vukari’s sound is something much bigger, much fuller than that would suggest, and their sophomore release is a good exercise in how to create a musical journey that cannot be indulged in pieces, but as a whole. It certainly seems that it was intended to be taken in thusly, suggesting an approach to songwriting that does more for quality than mere conceptual liberties, which means these guys knew what they were doing from the get-go. The album begins with a blast and ends on a whimper, and has a crescendo of joy in the middle to round it all off, and at any given time the guitars always want to disappear into the ether but are reluctantly kept aloft by prominently skilled drum work that at times (“Invictus Maneo,” “Ad Delerium II,” “Bathe in the Divine Light”) remind me of Deathspell Omega’s “Apokatastasis Pantôn.

    SVFFER

    Empathist

[engl] this album is not to be taken lightly. Underestimate its power, approach it with inadeguate preparation, and you will be fucking destroyed by its immeasurable violence and sheer tonnage. SVFFER have brought to you a work of incendiary aggression that literally feeds off of violence. Comparable in intensity to bands like Alpinist (from which the band descends), Baptists, Tempest, Centuries, Oathbreaker, Glasses, Vestiges, Torch Runner and the such, SVFFER are authors of metallic and embittered hardcore punk which knows no boundaries or limits in its reach to annihilate the listener, and which presents us with a boundless hunger to reduce to ash anything which dares to stand in their path. Coming once again as a 12? vinyl LP from Vendetta Records, this monstrous hardcore punk album is destined to set a new bar in sonic violence and redefine the concept of aggression in aural form.

    ULTHA

    Pain Cleanses Every Doubt

[engl] ULTHA's debut record features four epic songs of dark, moody Black Metal somewhere between the traditional Scandinavian school and a more contemporary US-Black Metal approach. “Pain Cleanses Every Doubt” is for fans of Ash Borer, Xasthur, Leviathan, Christicide, Blut Aus Nord... The four songs often vary in speed and mood, yet always functioning as one big entity. A constant feel of urging darkness is present. This manifests in the omnipresent melodies which lure the listener in and also in the sophisticated, metaphor ridden lyrics about melancholia, depression, doubt and anti-religious believes. The record was recorded in the bands rehearsal space only a few months after the band's initial first rehearsal. There is a fine balance of a cold, rough feel to a full and heavy sound, embodied in a very mature songwriting for such a young band.

    MOURNING CLOAK

    No visible light

[engl] Greensboro, NC’s Mourning Cloak, made up of members of Torch Runner, Graf Orlock & Braveyoung (Giant). No Visible Light clocks in at just over 33 minutes of crushing riffs, devastating beats and thunderous vocals. “No Visible Light.” The title is apt, because this is an ominous cloud blocking the sun, raining down charcoal dust, black mud, and infant ash on us all. Their Facebook page refers to their music as “funeral doom/punk,” but I only hear the former in this track. But this doesn’t sulk through the cemetery, it grooves hard enough to split the catacombs in half, releasing the crypt bats into the air. After the quickly dissipating opening ambience the guitars crawl from open graves and shake the rust off their bones with godless black-and-blues riffs. There is suck a thick layer of slime and sludge on this song that it reminds me of that barrier of grime and giant centipedes Indiana Jones’ love interest sticks her hand through in Temple of Doom. If you don’t get that reference, here it is in non-geek language: This song is nasty and unpleasant in the most sadistically delightful ways possible. The vocalist sounds like he’s plummeting into a bottomless pit, shaking hands with the devil to make a pact to finally break his fall. This is some seriously bleak stuff that fans of Bongzilla and Cough should feverishly inhale. ( mister growl )

    VYST

    try again. Fail again

    [engl]
"Here’s a surprisingly awesome shard of hardcore I only just came across. What made me take interest was that VYST contains members of Throwers, Glasses, and Perth Express. VYST will surely join the ranks of other great new German hardcore acts if they haven’t already. “Try Again. Fail Again.” is a half-hour of darkly tinged hardcore with some great ferocity displayed in each of the nine tracks featured here. They dip into moments of melody on some of the longer tracks like “Towards the Cliff”, “They Run”, and “Count Me Down” and their briefness makes them all the more powerful. The production is quite good also, everything rings clear and sharp bringing out the heaviness of some of the slower, crunchy passages. Vocals are wonderfully raspy and hoarse, rending his throat as he runs through issues both bleak and uplifting, contemptuous and angry. VYST don’t rely on dissonance. Merely powerful riffs that move from high speed punk to a moment or two in sludgecore territory (almost) to a short melodic or melancholic (sometimes clean) section — briefly there will be in a few songs a rough tremolo passage just touching on something blackened. Not injected with the blazing sludge found in Perth Express and yet not being as strictly hardcore as Glasses, VYST have found a comfortable middle ground with a very minor blackened-crusty influence without completely falling into the ever-popular splinter genre of dark hardcore; and it works very well.

    FELL VOICES

    Regnum Saturni

[engl] Regnum Saturni is presented as a three-panel-foldout 2LP ( 180 gr vinyl ) w/laser etched d-side. This full-length stands the first Fell Voices album with a title assigned by the band. And it run roughly 60 minutes in length. Fell Voices have long been known as a group of individuals that create an intensely unique live atmosphere. As a trio they have the fullness and power of a much larger band, and to see them live is truly something to behold. On Regnum Saturni–which was recorded live–they have captured that density, bringing more of the live experience to their recorded material than ever before. Not only was this feeling captured in the recording, but the songs themselves have been crafted with greater power. Everything on the new album is evidence of Fell Voices taking the energy of their songs to the next level. This is raw black metal mixed with the atmospere of cascadian black metal bands such as ash borer.

    TREES

    sickness in

    [engl]
'Sickness In' is the third album from Portland's most wretched, Trees. The band presents a two-song assault, each one roughly fifteen minutes in length, each a slowly rotting heap of droning slow-motion deathdoom riffs decomposing into clouds of black amplifier hum, high shrieking voices and tortured screams drifting against the glacial roar of smoking amp stacks and short-circuiting hardware. Where the previous album had Trees employing some interesting rhythmic chaos and longer stretches of ambient filth, this time around the band drops some of their most leaden, majestic riffs yet into their slow-mo filthstorm, massive saurian doom riffs slipping WAY out of the confines of 'groove' and deep into rumbling fields of charred ritualistic chanting and almost Abruptum-like states of psychotic noise. The first track 'Cover Your Mouth' crashes in on an avalanche of thrumming electricity and metallic noise, the crushing abstract heaviness collapsing in on itself, the rhythm section accentuating the rumbling black mass/mess with thunderous blasts of anti-propulsion. Trees have always seemed to have a somewhat improvisational feel to their extreme doom-laden horror, but just when you think that 'Cover' is on the verge of dissolving into a field of pure drone, the band unleashes titanic earth-scorching riffage.
