    LES BAXTER & HIS ORCHESTRA

    Les Baxter's Jungle Jazz

    [engl]
PLUS 4 BONUS TRACKS! Les Baxter (1922-1996) used to be an utterly talented composer and bandleader who was on the go to the max during his active years. His version and as I should say vision of jazz music was a contemporary fresh and colorful sound with an exotic vibe due to the use of many elements of latin music within a modernized big band sound. We speak of the exotica and space age era when jazz music became more than just a few musicians on stage in a back street pub sweating their life out while improvising. He draws inspiration from the various swing orchestras of the late 1920s and combines this lush big band approach with a hot south american groove that shows an affinity for Cuban club music, for mambo and salsa. With rhythmical effects and a few wordless female vocal passages added he builds this haunting jungle atmosphere on top while leaving out the too obvious animal voices. The latin jazz and swing elements harmonize fairly well with each other and the melodies Les Baxter and his orchestra create drag you into a different world. You can dance to this or just close your eyes and float upon this gentle river of sound. The tunes are all built and arranged like a movie score which is no wonder as Les Baxter has been a soundtrack composer ever since.

    EDEN AHBEZ

    Eden's Island

    [engl]
2017 EDITION! PLUS BONUS TRACKS! It is 1960, Rock?n?Roll has just lost a couple of its protagonists during this and the previous year, the time of the great balladeers has just begun but soon will run out due to the new and exciting beat invasion. In US mainstream the tiki culture has reached a certain peak and is about to collapse but still goes strong and with it comes the so called ?exotica? music, a crossover between smooth jazz and swing, Latin grooves, haunting melodies that are rooted in the folkloristic sounds from different parts of this world plus weird sound effects that often create a spooky jungle or dreamy island beach atmosphere. It can even bend your mind that far you would see palm trees growing out of your speakers and witness monkeys and parrots having fun in your room. Eden Ahbez, born in 1908, passed in 1995, a man living an even more consistent dropout and hippie lifestyle way before the movement was born in the mid 60s, a beat poet and composer who wrote the hit tune ?Nature boy? that gave Nat King Cole his first big success in 1947, approaches the field of exotica music from a different point of view creating an epic concept album about an utopian society living in peace and harmony on an island far away from the modern western world as we know it.

    MARTIN DENNY

    Exotica

    [engl]
This album at hand by prolific legend Martin Denny is the one which gave a name to an entire genre. Released for the first time in 1956, “Exotica” does have more than just a historical importance. The songs are all outstanding. Based on jazz and folk this is an early example of mind altering music , because the album sets you in a dreamy state with all its haunting melodies and the sound effects that remind of wild animals in the jungle trees. The rhythmical base is rooted in Latin music, from mambo via samba to bossa nova you find all the Latin American forms of dance music combined with the bebop elements. Asian percussion instruments and harmonies also find their way onto this album. There are colorful tunes that make you think of Japanese folk but when you listen closely you will recognize melodies that would fit well with US western movie soundtracks. The easy listening sound of the 50s comes as the last ingredient and the icing on the cake. Right at the same time when this album came to see the light of day another movement named “space age” happened with an equally dreamy style but more science fiction oriented. A few of these pulsating electronic influences did pass by composer and conductor Martin Denny while creating this masterpiece and so you might feel like flying away from time to time, but the journey always ends on a beautiful island in the South Pacific ocean where pretty girls and boys dance to hot blooded savage rhythms.

Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2

    [engl]
This CD combines the first two volumes from the “Exotic Blues & Rhythm” compilation series named “Katanga!” and “Ahbe Casabe!” with two additional bonus tracks. This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Most of the tunes at hand sound astonishingly fresh and timeless. EDDIE COLE & THREE PEPPERS with their hypnotizing groover “Police” for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. The beat will drag you directly from your seat and make you swing on the dancefloor. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates impressively how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. The simple yet haunting lead vocal harmony makes this song a steaming hot all-time fave. And this is only one out of 26 rare gems. The album already starts magically with a gloomy bluesy tune named “Green onions” played by German composer and conductor Claus Ogermann, a cover of a BOOKER T & THE MG'S tune from 1962 with a rather specific basic melody that will stay with you forever. There is much more simmering popcorn rock and enchanting exciting pop from those old times to be found on this compilation and when you reach the “Ahbe Casabe” this is where the strange and quirky charme of exotica music captures your soul even more.

    DICK HYMAN / MARY MAYO

    Moon Gas

    [engl]
The jazz genre spawned a couple of quite colorful subspecies that were part of important pop cultural movements to let the ordinary man escape from the daily grind. Two of the most prolific pop jazz spheres were Exotica Music which accompanies with the Tiki Culture omnipresent throughout the 50s and early 60s and Space Age Music, a rather pop oriented accessible style with hints of swing and vocal jazz spiced up with quite mind altering sound effects. “Moon gas”, a cooperation between pianist / organist Dick Hyman and singer Mary Mayo, hits the center of the space age genre directly and shows a diversity of aspects from rather dreamy tunes with melancholic and really haunting vocal melodies courtesy of Mrs. Mayo to groovy, swinging compositions that invite you for an easy dance. Still you have to turn your mind from all these strange little sounds that whistle and sparkle around the rather uncomplicated easy listening jazz pop compositions. The songs alone would certainly be on par with the best contemporary hit tunes of their age but what really makes them outstanding is this combination with the sound world of a space laboratory or commando bridge of a starship. 1963 definitely was a year where the USA found themselves in a challenge with the Soviet Union about the predominance in space so this type of music fit well with the dreams of the average man to explore distant galaxies even it was only in his mind.

    FRANK HUNTER & HIS ORCHESTRA

    White Goddess

Paradise Found Vol. 1: Rare Exotic Sounds

[engl] Born from the unfulfilled desires of a whole generation for a peaceful, yet adventurous life in a mystifying environment, a new pop art style emerged in the 1950s combining elements of different cultures from the Pacific area. Part of this movement became a smooth, yet exciting music with a strongly picturesque approach labeled as “exotica”. The compilation at hand “Paradise Found - Rare Exotic Sounds Vol. 1” captures the entire spectrum of moods and directions this music took at the pinnacle phase of its popularity. Beginning with an introduction broadcasted from Hawaii and a salutation ceremony in every imaginable language spoken on the Polynesian islands, the compilation directly pulls you into a colorful and far-a-way world. Close your eyes, have a fruity cocktail and drift through the mystical soundscapes based on laid back swing and haunting bebop fundament with sudden interjections of Polynesian traditional music, screaming monkeys and yelling parrots, hot blooded ritual dances with that certain savage feeling and charming melodies that bring pictures of a sunset at a beautiful beach to your mind with the wind softly blowing through the crowns of the palm trees. Exotica music as it is featured here is the mind bending and expanding musical experience of the 1950s. The psychedelic dreams of the early post war USA. So be enchanted by this captivating compilation. Aloha!

    IGRA STAKLENIH PERLI

    Vrt Svetlosti

[engl] Second album by this Yugoslavian band from 1980, typical in sound, style and emotional expression for the classic Eastern European progressive sound. The symphonic aspect with straight but very mind blowing synthesizer harmonies and cheerfully grand guitar leads have taken over the scepter from the debut album’s more space rock oriented direction here. A colorful, very lush but still strong and visionary ocean of melodies and sounds capes opens up before your ears and invites you to dive deep into your imagination. IGRA STAKLENIH PERLI have indeed created a “garden of light”, for this is what the title would mean in English. This is a floating stream of majestic rock that recalls the greatest European fantasy prog acts of their era such as ELOY, OMEGA from Hungary, the earlier FAITHFUL BREATH and GDR greats such as BERLUC when it gets heavier or LIFT. And you can bet, IGRA STAKLENIH PERLI know everything about dynamics, so they turn up the volume and rock like wild beasts when the music demands it. So, folks, don’t be shy, don’t hesitate, take a seat and let the fantastic journey begin.

    MAX FROST & THE TROOPERS

    Shape Of Things To Come

    [engl]
1968, garage rock, psychedelic sounds, mind expanding substances and wicked colorful fantastic movies pointing at a probably strange future or dealing with the then current dissatisfying political and social situation or with the abuse of drugs were the hottest topics of the time. The Vietnam War had reached a preliminary peak in its progress, the atmosphere was full of either love or fury. A great time to create a movie about a future society of young people taking over the reign in the USA and the first step on their path to success was a rockband, MAX FROST AND THE TROOPERS. Not much is known about the musicians who either participated on the soundtrack of the movie or on this sole album by MAX FROST AND THE TROOPERS. The band name TROOPERS is based on the term "troops," the designation Frost was used in the film to refer to his friends and followers. What we get to hear on the new reissue of “Shape of things to come” at hand is both: the entire studio work of MAX FROST AND THE TROOPERS plus the entire soundtrack album for the “Wild in the streets” movie and it is getting enormously colored and from time to time quite bizarre. The musical range goes from fuzzed out garage beat via soulful high energy rock numbers to a small quantity of acid freak outs.

    EDEN AHBEZ

    Eden Island

BILL PLUMMER & THE COSMIC BROTHERHOOD

    s/t

[engl] Long thought to be lost to only the most industrious of crate diggers, Bill Plummer's 1968 album Bill Plummer & the Cosmic Brotherhood makes its triumphant return on Captain High Record for the first time reissued on vinyl. Already an accomplished jazz bassist at the time of the album's release, Bill Plummer turned heads on the Cosmic Brotherhood with heavy Eastern and psychedelic influences that challenged contemporary ideas about jazz. Original compositions like 'Journey to the East' and 'Arc 294' are colored by striking sitar sounds, rhythmic chanting and melodic improvisation, while Plummer lends his distinctive touch to songs by The Byrds ('Lady Friend') and Burt Bacharach ('The Look of Love'). The result is an album that reflects a musician at the peak of his creative powers, unafraid to explore new ideas and sounds that meld into a cohesive, spectacular album.
