    FRUSTRATION

    Empires of shame

[engl] Introducing them for the umpteenth time would be disrespectful. But reminding everyone of why they’re essential can’t hurt. They’re closely intertwined with Born Bad’s rise to fame, being their first ever release, they’re seen as the caring big brothers of the French indie scene. Their pathway in itself is symbolic: hailing from the garage closed circuit from the 90s, they gave up the tattoos and brilliantine rock to try something different –at the crossroads of punk and cold wave, of Métal Urbain, Killing Joke and Joy Division, while we were all rediscovering France’s synth-wave heritage with theBIPPP and Des Jeunes gens mödernes compilations. And five fellows not particularly renowned for their technical skills found themselves invested with a peculiar grace, becoming avant-gardist just as they were entering their forties, and showing the way to a whole generation of bands that suddenly became aware that it was possible, even here, in our star-crossed France. Critical acclaim, high sells, delighted crowd: the rest is history. Ever since, nostalgia has kind of lost its appeal. We grew fed up of reading in the rock museum press that nothing valuable had been recorded since 1967, and we figured out that all things considered, we probably had better things to do than picking the patterns on our wallpapers or our Italian ties. It was time to get back into the pit, not looking back, and getting numb on something that is ours. The excitement of listening to the latest garage hit boys has well faded (the next band trying to emulate Thee Oh See’s repertory can already consider itself dismissed), but it is intact when it comes to lend an ear to Empire of Shames, the third album by Frustration. It is “only” their third album in over 15 years of existence, the defining sign of bands that don’t ride any wave but would rather dig their very own hole in the wall of legends, and hang there their plaque of best craftsmen in the industry. They crushed mountain chains on Relax (2008), uncovered new continents and rainforests withUncivilised (2012), so it’s only logical they now project to terraform Mars planet with this album that celebrates their return to a cold hostility that echoes the one of punks going by the name of a Polish capital city. “Dreams, Law, Rights and Duties”, “Just Wanna Hide” and “Excess” are punches in the knees as signs of welcome from Fabrice, whose voice wanders from a Curtis-like spleen to a cockney spit. If “Arrows Of Love” sounds like the album’s break, this mesmerising Smiths-like ballad that turns into a proletarian anthem is one of the peak in the album. “Mother Earth in Rags” will undoubtedly be a hit, given its harangue as baroque and dramatic as a speech from Lenin you would hear in an opera about communism; “Cause You Runaway” shows that our lads have also listened to James Murphy; and “No Place” (a last minute addition) is a synth-punk-noise gem that will generate one hell of a pogo at the end of their next concert. Frustration is now this fully grown-up lion that has no intention of ending up as a bedside rug. The grouches that you only hear when the press hands them a megaphone, and that would be disarmed if their MacBook were taken away from them are still talking about the good old days. The king of the jungle is back to restore its order, reminding tourists that coming here as a casual observer is not an option, because this is no ordinary regional park. The great history of rock can take a hike because our softened nerves are yearning to be tense one last time, our voices get lost, and we want more of those poor attempts at stagediving if only we can see Frustration one more electrify a crowd like they did at the latest Villette Sonique, with their social-class comrades of Sleaford Mods. And this, is the only reason why we agree to give in to music, this intrusive thing that never asks for our advice. The rest is just a background noise of conceited babbling saturating the feed of our souls. Bollocks, basically.

    Elsewhere

    are you serious?

Bier raus, Fluppe an, Girl geschnappt und Party on!

EMILIO E A TRIBO DO RUM

    s/t

[engl] They played rock’n’roll like nobody else in Portugal during the middle 80’s. Played all around in the country, mixing blues, rockabilly and punk rock. For 3 years they planted the seeds of what would come next, influencing tons of other bands and musicians around, and left a long legacy till today. Formed in 1985 in Lisbon they start their wild and primitive rock’n’roll adventure in 1986 with the complete formation, making a legion of fans all around Portugal. In this LP we collected all the studio recordings, released only in a limited tape edition in 86, and some live recordings also. Dont matter if you like rock n roll, indie, punk, rap, hip-hop, soul or some other shitty kind of music, you will die to have a copy of this gemm, you gonna dance after midnight with the werewolves!!!!

    MIGUEL DE DEUS

    Black Soul Brother

[engl] For the first time reissued, with the great contribution of Miguel de Deus's family in São Paulo, that suplied the amazing collection of photos for the 4 pages inner, inside the LP. This limited edition is a highly collectable for fans of brazilian soul, groove and psychedelia. It's our contribution to pay respect to one of the most important brazilian musicians of the late 60's and early 70's. Main brain of bands like OS BRAZÕES and ASSIM ASSADO, he let us a amazing legacy for new generations. This is a small, but more than deserved homage to him, finally. Miguel de Deus was the protagonist of this amazing Afro-Funk movement, together with a group of “heavy” musicians, as they were called in those days of consolidation of a strong Black Power scene, mainly composed of black youth from the outskirts of the suburbs of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where the movement took the name of Black Rio. Its raw Rock-Funk-Psychedelic-Tropicalia

    MARTIN, PAUL

    It Happened

[engl] 1966–67 garage anthems, jangly folk–rock and baroque pop courtesy of prolific songwriter Paul Myerberg aka Paul Martin. "There a new man in town ? Martin!" So began the liner notes from the picture sleeve of his second 45 record in 1967. Actually, Paul Martin started life as Paul Myerberg. Growing up in Manhattan, Paul was influenced by the exciting music of the day, like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. In the mid–Sixties Paul started writing and recording some impressive demos which ran the gamut from garage–punk, to jangly folk–rock, soul–pop and baroque, orchestrated pop. Many of these were cut on 4–track tape at Tower Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan with the help and guidance of the skilled jazz musician, Frank Owens. While at Tower, Paul met Herb Ostrow who released Paul’s first single on the IMPEX label out of Philadelphia. "It Happened", a terrific garage number, came out in the spring of 1966. The following year, Paul released a second 45 on his own Rodin label, "The Last Remains of our Love" (another impressive, passionate garage gem), backed with "The Fairy Princess" (a dreamy pop–psych track). Almost 30 years later Paul’s first album was released on the Distortions Records label, compiling tracks from his two sought–after singles plus studio demos and acetates. For many people, this was the first introduction to the music of Paul Martin, the man with a Brill Building inside his head. Now, we present a revamped version of that compilation, featuring new artwork, newly remastered sound, insert with rare photos / liner notes and one previously unreleased track from 1967.

    ROBBIE THE WEREWOLF

    At the Waleback

[engl] First ever vinyl reissue of this ’Incredible Strange Music’, private press (infamous) classic, championed by lovers of the wonderful & weird such as Jello Biafra. A time capsule which will send you back to the post–beatnik, pre–psychedelic / hippie scene from L.A. With his long red hair and matching beard, Robbie The Werewolf – a folksinger of the frantic variety with a fetish for monsters – was a striking performer with a manic stage presence, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of his original songs and uniquely reworked versions of folk standards, played on a beat–up twelve–string guitar. This inspired some of the most bizarre songs ever committed to vinyl: listen to "Count Dracula" and its proto–psychedelic, amazing echo effects or the insane DIY rocker "Rockin’ Werewolf". It was at The Wale Back in L.A one heady night in 1964, that Robbie’s solo act was captured for posterity and released as a tiny private pressing. A few years later, Robbie was a founding member of L.A psychedelic band Clear Light. But that’s another story?

    DANIEL GRAU

    Disco Fantasy

[engl] This 1979 release has been the fourth solo effort of Venezuelan composer and musician Daniel Grau. The music has been settled at the pulse of its time for certain. Discofunk with a Latin melody and rhythm approach surely was the hottest thing among the dancing folks back in the day and the rather futuristical synthesizer arrangements turn these memorable tunes into a spacey and spicy affair. The sound is perfect and the performance equals its package. The compositions are quite long all in all and therefore have a hypnotical effect on the listener and dancer. The continuing pulsating groove comes in a repetitive manner creating a floating atmosphere. This record is surely a product of its era and made for disco lovers to dance on through the simmering nights, but unlike most mainstream disco albums this record opens the gate to another dimension touching the senses of everybody in reach when it gets played on the turntable. Next to the similar massive Donna Summer works like “I feel love” this is the true essence of disco music just entirely instrumental with an emphasize on synthesizer melodies instead of vocals. Drift away into your disco fantasy, folks!

    ALBERT AYLER QUARTET

    Ghosts

[engl] This 1965 album by free jazz master Albert Ayler and his quartet is one of the classics of their style and fetches up to 150,00 Euros for a very good copy among collectors. I have to admit that this record contains some of the most intriguing and wicked music I ever experienced. And I say that from the point of view of a John Coltrane aficionado. Well, Ayler and his mates Don Cherry on trumpet, Sonny Murray on drums and Gary Peacock on bass guitar are definitely on par with the before mentioned god of free jazz and others like Ornette Coleman. If you listen to this album from the pop music perspective you may find only screeching and overblown saxes and some non structured fiddling on drums and bass so that it's far different than the average mainstream. But if you have a fondness for soundscapes, improvisations and music that creates more of an atmosphere rather than fluffy melodies, this is just yours. We talk about a 1964 live session in a Copenhagen studio. From time to time Ayler and his band start with straight melody lines and soon let it all run free before partly returning to recognizable and memorable melodies. In this case I speak about the title track and at least Ayler returning to play some sweet and swinging sax harmonies while drums and bass still rumble and blast completely improvised lines in the back. The composition named „Vibrations“ is another of these outbursts of insanity. Ayler and Cherry duel each other who might be the most free and twisted player. Murray pounds the kettles and cymbals like a maniac and Peacock joins in on standing bass. It is an ongoing rumbling and definitely strange but if you let it take you away, you will be completely enchanted. Free jazz fanatics will surely love this to deaf. For fans of Coltrane and Coleman a must have.

    HEAVY METAL

    Total Bullshit

[engl] Sean : And you thought the world had run out of great band names!! No sir - welcome to the debut album by Heavy Metal. Over the space of 13 tracks the two piece from Berlin make dirty punk, childlike chaos and raw DIY gems with reckless abandon. In parts it sounds like pissed idiots with a 4 Track recorder armed with a load of ATV 7”s and in other parts like some obscure Australian DIY 7” from 1979. Standout cuts are ‘Snail of Rock’ which is all snotty 77 punk rock, ‘Would You Adam and Eve It?’ which could have been one a classic Step Forward Records release and ‘Total Bullshit’ which sounds like the Sleaford Mods but with the recording quality of ‘Bullshit Detector’ compilations on Crass. You used to love Heavy Metal when you were young and now you can fall in love with Heavy Metal all over again. Lydia : After only six rehearsals and no previous recordings to date, Static Age is proud to introduce Berlin’s emerging powerhouse, HEAVY METAL. With this astonishing first full-length, HEAVY METAL crash through 13 tracks of noisy, antisocial, high-tension punk, eagerly mixing electric punk aggression with woozy electronic euphoria. The songwriting, which hits that sweet spot between rudimentary racket and surreal elaboration, brings the band’s restlessness to the forefront—they could break out into dance or a fight at any minute, everything sounds possible. No sense is left on the cutting room floor; instead, the clamoring drums, buzzing bass and snappy riffs are cut with catchy synths, bountiful pedal action and an exploding cocktail of bleeps, loops, samples and solos. This ticked off diversity shines on multiple, rewarding occasions. Single-ready “Don’t Call Me Brother,” with its kaleidoscopic synths and old-school beat, is a bona fide dance floor pleaser despite its antagonizing lyrical content, and “Staring at the Rich Kids” is an instant classic, a stomping class critique that could have easily been found on a Bullshit Detector comp circa 1979. Yet it is bonus track, “Total Bullshit,” that flawlessly showcases the creative menace found in the wake of their nihilism. A joyride of shambolic punk, with a frustrated Welshman spitting wit and sarcasm into the microphone, “LP” could be the circumstantial soundtrack to a weeklong drug binge, going through all the motions to match, including ecstasy, hysteria, hostility and an uncontrollable, primitive urge to fight and fuck. And by recording everything themselves, HEAVY METAL’s already bizarre sound is pushed further into the delightfully deranged corners of their collective potential. An intoxicating stream of consciousness, “LP” was recorded in their Lichtenberg practice space and mastered by the wizard of sonic chiaroscuro Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory, making it sound as unhinged and sardonic as it is distinctively captivating. They’re already working on what is promised to be a much anticipated follow up, so get into it or don’t. Just don’t call ’em brother. ( Lydia )

Dangerous, aggressive sound with wall of fuzz guitars and manic speed drumming. Highly recommended to anyone into "Raw Power" era Stooges, "Back in the USA" era MC5, Pink Fairies, early Motörhead, Hawkwind, Acid Archives US obscurities like White Boy & The Average Rat Band, early NWOBHM bands and compilations like "Bonehead Crunchers". S to S emerged out of the ashes of local band Etna, featuring the Cannella brothers: Fulvio on lead guitar and Mirco on bass along with George Abry on drums. After the demise of Etna, the Cannella brothers decided to form a power–trio: S to S was born. Upon meeting producer Michel Dickenscheid, they were offered a deal: the band would help Michel to build a new recording studio in exchange of free studio time with the intention of recording their first album, which would be produced by Michel. So they built a state–of–the art studio with their own hands and soon after the recording of the S to S album started. Mirco switched from bass to guitar so they recruited a new bass player, Picci Salvatore, who abandoned the band just after the recording sessions. A friend of the band played occasional keyboards and Michel, the producer, played sax on "I’m fool", the most psychedelic sounding song of the album, similar to early Hawkwind. The rest of the songs are prime examples of pure hardrock featuring layers and layers of fuzzed–out guitars and killer riffs by Fulvio, a monstrous sound created by producer Michel using primitive homemade pedal effects and up to four guitar overdubs. The album was completed in early 1977 but remained in the shelf until the following year. The band members were very pissed off when they received the albums from the pressing plant and discovered that their manager had included a logo with Sig runes lettering in the cover without consulting them. Only 300 copies were pressed on their own Overcome label. Meanwhile Mirco formed a punk band named Acétylène but decided to concentrate on S to S soon after. S to S continued right into the 80s with some changes in their line–up, playing many successful shows in Belgium, changing their style towards a more heavy–blues–rock sound, before splitting in 1982.

    COLUMBIAN NECKTIES

    It's all gone

    HUMAN ABFALL

    SPIDER KING

    Shot to pieces

[engl] “Leaving you spellbound in its androgynous vocal delivery, Spider King’s Animals is a haunting children’s march that paralyses me with each listen” Cedric Bixler Zavala (Mars Volta/Antemasque) An unknown pleasure torn out of Manchester’s lost DIY manual, this overqualified/underexposed post-punk pop pillar cast an almost invisible undetected web across the history of Manchester’s inner-city music scene which has trapped body parts of The Mothmen, Martin Hannett, Gerry And The Holograms, John Cooper Clarke, The Blue Orchids, Naffi Sandwich (The Naffis) and The Fates in its glue. As a central mast to 1970s/80s Manchester’s “deserted” DIY era, spanning angular jazz funk, punk and sarcastic synth pop, Spider King has also played huge parts in Manchester’s honorary adoption of The Velvet Underground’s Nico (as her lead guitarist), fronted Martin Hannett’s first ever band and inhabits a key roll in the careers of Sad Cafe, Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, Paul Young and AC/DC’s Mancunian debut. With dozens of self-penned songs, unreleased demos and two of the best collectable Manc punk funk 45s to grace collectors want lists it’s almost unbelievable (almost tragic) that Mike King never released a full length album… until now. Shot To Pieces is one of the most elusive jagged pieces of the North West’s punk funk puzzle. Recorded sporadically between 1979 and 1983 with a cast of characters from the Rabid/Absurd label family, such as behind the scenes synth wielder John Scott from Gerry And The Holograms, and producers like Laurie Latham (The Blockheads) it’s plain to see why 2016?s current music climate is the perfect time for the Spider King’s lost music to resurface. Commonly recognised by stalwarts of the era’s mutating punk/alt/indie genre as “the one that got away”, Spider King is the archetypal artist’s artist as well as the outsider’s outsider and the hardest working man in no-business who is now attracting a whole new audience of champions from bloggers, vinyl nerds and well respected contemporary musicians with his appearances on mix-tapes and various artist compilations. On hearing this essential release you could argue that these lost “spider-grams” are more relevant now than they were when those arachnophobic A&R men shooed him away over 3 decades ago. For those who ain’t afraid to get bitten say hello to the Spider King.

    LIKE ELEPHANTS

    Oneironaut

„We are living in the forest of the ghost“ – Manchen Geistern müssen wir uns erst im Traum stellen.
