    GORIES

I know you fine, but how you doin

Now on 180 gr Vinyl! Their tough-to-find second LP, reissued at last with a new sleeve for this LP.This LP is so damned powerful and soulful (whereas the first LP was a gutteral ROAR!), and is a goddamn classic, so therefore Crypt has reissued it to ram it down the throats o? those that missed out the first time around. Dig it!

    GORIES

    Outta here

Their third and final LP, following a super-fine slew of two LPs and five 7''''s on In The Red, AuGoGo, SupPop, Estrus, New Rose. THE GORIES were set on self-destruct throughout their career, but always pulling together to knock out damn great live shows, blazing out a careening stew o? 50s blues/R&B and 60s punk.

    GOSPEL SWINGERS

    s/t

[engl] The Gospel Swingers from Austin, TX release their debut album, following a killer 7" on In The Red Records. They are sort of a garage soul rock supergroup: Former members of Blacktop, Ronnie Dawson??s band, Fireworks. 3 members are in the Now Time Delegation as well. The album is produced by Tim Kerr, who plays some guitar, too. The result: organ-driven, soul-injected garage shakin' rock 'n' roll. This 180g LP is limited to 500 copies!

    GRANDE COBRA

    Echoes of rebellion

    GRUESOMES

    Tyrants Of Teen Trash

    HANK ROBOT & THE ETHNICS

    Elvis-Jello Mojo

[engl] The lost Dead Kennedy recordings? Nope! The debut of Hank Robot & The Ethnics, a Powersolo side project, that doesn't seem to take things too serious and rather blast out a 12 track party record which should leave you with a smile on your face. Label info:"A couple of months ago, I had the honour of DJ-ing at a Powersolo show and heard, saw and understood (I guess) that night their wonderful ability of going beyond borders, underlined by their huge sense of absurdity. I loved these guys. A short while later, Sir Kim Kix sent me some recordings of another of his bands, HANK ROBOT & THE ETHNICS, and for the first time ever since I heard Destruction Unit (that album you listen to when being seriously hopeless), I had the feeling I could destroy walls and felt frankly relieved. On first listening, you will get a little hint of the Dead Kennedys - especially with their bombastic hit “Homba” -, but don't get fooled: that's only a "trompe l'oreille" and it soon disappears. There was something more, way much more, something making me feel like “I'm in love and I feel fine”. Some might call it punk. Well, I guess that's punk, yes! But punk with some nice surprises too... (don't ask, these are surprises). “Lightning Bolt” has this typical fantasy which doesn't readily fit any musical genre, and which I love with Kim Kix. While the opener "Where Are You Gonna Go" might sound modern, well, it is aaaaactually constructed like a wonderful repetitive 60s garage fuzzy tune. It just had to become a Moody Monkey thingy! Thank you Hank & The Ethnics! The really cool artwork is designed by Martin Thorsen of The Courettes. Bobby McBride once referred to Hank’s set as “a bad nightmare in human musical form”, adding that it is still true today. “Hank Robot of course is Kim Kix of Powersolo. They are dirty, nasty desperate men, hell bent on destruction. They kind of breach a gap between psychobilly, punk, surf, garage and trashy French pop. Hank Robot is not by a long-shot the only band Kim Kix has aside from Powersolo, but it’s my favourite and I’m sticking to it. Robot has been teasing an album for a few months now – he’s been getting drunk and laying down tracks. He’s been sleeping on stairs, he’s that unwelcome house guest or that uncle you had who gave you your first cigarette, a sip of beer and an Iggy Pop tape. You dig him. You get him. After recruiting Anders Birkekær from Dro?n and Per Silkjær of Fossils, Hank and his juiced up crew headed into the studio and recorded 12 punk songs – the first of which is “Homba” – which according to Robot: “it’s a true story”. It’s a frenetic old school hardcore punk song, not too far away from vintage Dead Kennedys and Dead Milkmen – the good old shit. If “Homba” is any indication of what’s to come – I’m stoked. What a fucking slice of authentic trash this is. The whole world is looking at Aarhus for ‘punk’ music – we might as well keep dishing it up with Hank Robot to shit it out to the masses with his new band: The Ethnics.“ Bobby McBride

    HARA-KEE-REES

    Explode

    HARLAN T. BOBO

    A History of Violence

[engl] Once the intro to opener “Human” gives way to its fully-realized sonic purpose, it’s obvious that Harlan T. Bobo’s fourth proper album, A History of Violence, is quite different from his previous body of work. The classic historical emotional heft of a songwriter trying to make sense of life’s chaos, think mid-70s Lou Reed, especially Coney Island Baby, is a thread that can be heard running through the album’s mid-tempo tracks like “Human” and the miniature literary tragedy that is “Nadine”. The punchier tracks on the album, like “Spiders”, might conjure very early Green On Red, what X’s mid-80s output could have been, or even the roots-rock tendencies of overlooked genius, Cass McCombs. A History of Violence still highlights Bobo’s whiskey-and-cigarette-informed vocal style, and on the more intimate tracks, it’s a distorted ear candy that warbles into increasingly sunken, uncomfortable places, like that of the songwriter with which comparisons have followed Bobo throughout his career: the late Leonard Cohen. But there is a richer canvas on which to work this time out, not to mention a decidedly heavier and darker one. The album was recorded in Memphis with Doug Easley, who has previously worked with Cat Power, Pavement, Wilco, Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer, and Jeff Buckley. Bobo also brought in Steve Selvidge (The Hold Steady, Bash & Pop) on bass and Jeff “Bunny” Dutton (Action Family) on guitar, along with regular contributors Jeff Bouck (Polyphonic Spree) and Brendan Spangler (Viva l’American Death Ray). The result is a naturally dynamic album that seems equally at home with howling guitars and heavy bass lines as it does with haunting piano and humble pleas. A History of Violence is Bobo’s most complex -- and complete -- album to date.

    HAYSEED DIXIE

    Kiss my Grass

[engl] In reality, there's a split personality involved in this man's music: there's Blowfly, the outrageously garbed creator of trash classics such as "Shittin' on the Dock of the Bay" and "Porno Freak," and then there's Clarence Reid, who has recorded more than a dozen "clean" albums over the years and penned songs for the likes of K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Gwen McRae, Betty Wright, and Sam and Dave. Many people cite Blowfly as being the first rapper with his 1965 "Rap Dirty" record, which was re-recorded for disco giants T.K. Records after the smash success of Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." Blowfly himself credits the "soul talking" Southern radio DJs of the '50s and '60s as the pioneers of rap, but he is without dispute the first rapper to have a song banned, after an Alabama record store was busted for peddling "Porno Freak." Blowfly was also sued by the President of ASCAP for his "What a Difference a Lay Makes." (The music publishing honcho also happened to be the composer of the popular "What a Difference a Day Makes.") Blowfly's sounds are a staple of modern-day hip hop. His music has been sampled by many rappers, including The Jurassic 5, (whose hit "Quality Control" is backed by the outro from Weird World Of Blowfly) Ice Cube, Atmosphere and Puff Daddy.
