Puissance 4
[engl] What is going on with this German band? There are five members, but Maradudeur plays paper-thin post-punk as if it were a short-scale power trio. Some songs are en français, others auf Deutsch, some English. Mostly, Puissance 4's lack of standard post-punk signifiers just takes me to post-punk's raison d'être: to reconfigure, mutate and spark. Much like Palberta's excellent Palberta 5000, this is very much its own thing. -Lars Gotrich (NPR/Bandcamp) Truly a cool DIY package! Housed in a printed, die-cut DJ sleeve with A3 riso printed outer wrap, insert, and download code.- Format

EP 2
[engl] MARBLED EYE is the latest addition to our POST PUNK / ANARCHO PUNK BAY AREA roster. And, what can I say; the bay area never disappoints us here at the ETT hq. The four guys are keenly aware of historical continuities and, from them, draw their own logical conclusions, reducing their influences down to their essential constituent elements and reassembling them into now-music for now-people. Flouting Rockist conventions with equal doses of stark minimalism and plodding fury, these post-punks resolutely refuse the "post" prefix. MARBLED EYE slithers effortlessly across genre boundaries, drawing upon myriad eras and localities. The Units, Neu!, Wire, Television, CRISIS, and contemporary sounds from the Australian garage rock subterrain like TOTAL CONTROL or INSTITUTE and DIÄT all come to mind. If you are familiar with the MARBLED EYE demo, you will be fanatic about this new EP. They lean towards the punk side of post-punk. They recall Crisis & Coitus Int. with a mix of anarcho bands thrown in there, too, and create a fascinating tension, a palpable struggle between their inner selves and their music that demands to be heard. As sharp as the band's earlier work, but you can hear that they climbed the next step with this new EP. Expertly tight and catchy drumming, cold as ice, monotone, pitch perfect post-punk vocals and a rhythm section that would make anyone jealous. This band will do great things, starting right now. A bursting, melancholic post-punk EP and the best start for us in 2017. They do the future-primitive punk thing so effortlessly well that they would have been a perfect addition to Subterranean’s roster some thirty years earlier. I could not be happier to offer you this perfect execution. Enjoy it!- Format

Leisure
[engl] Debut LP from this Bay Area, California band whose EP we raved and released about a while back, and now that they’re on vinyl full lenght, we still love them. To me, Marbled Eye sound like the perfect mix of Total Control and Parquet Courts. Like both of those bands, Marbled Eye have a way of combining a Krautrock-style groove with angular, Wire-esque post-punk style riffing and wrapping the whole thing up in great pop songwriting. While their hooks aren’t quite as big as the most memorable moments of the bands I just compared them to, I feel like that’s by design. Even though this is a LP, it’s so grooved out that it feels like a record you put on and get lost in the atmosphere of rather than putting on to pump your fist and sing along. This band is absolutely killer, and I feel like it’s only a matter of time before they’re as big as the two bands I just compared them to, so grab this LP and get in on the ground floor. The Austin band Institute pairs numbing and rigid post-punk with a Krautrock vibe, and the pairing turns out to be perversely appealing. As sharp as the band's earlier work, but you can hear that they climbed the next step with this new EP. Expertly tight and catchy drumming, cold as ice, monotone, pitch perfect post-punk vocals and a rhythm section that would make anyone jealous. This is just a captivating listen the whole way through, the kind of record I can put on and just watch the turntable spinning, getting lost in its intricacies.- Format

Mass Grave
[engl] The Martha’s Vineyard Ferries is a rock band featuring Elisha Wiesner (Kahoots) on guitar, Bob Weston (Shellac, Volcano Suns, Mission of Burma) on bass guitar, and Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine, The New Year) on drums. Their new record, Mass. Grave will be released on October 14, 2013 on Africantape. The band – and more specifically, the band name - began as a kind of gag between friends. “Elisha and I were just hanging around talking about having a band and we were coming up with ridiculous names,” Weston said. “At first, I don’t think we really thought it would happen. But after awhile we were like, ‘Hey, should we really do this?’ Who would be the drummer?’ and Elisha immediately said, ‘Brokaw’.” What began as a hypothetical joke between friends, quickly resulted in some pretty incredible actual music in the form of their debut EP In The Pond (2010, Sick Room Records). As one might expect, you can hear elements of all the other bands Chris, Bob and Elisha are involved in, but ultimately, the Ferries’ music is truly its own thing. On Mass. Grave, the trio has developed its sound even further - though it's a sound that might be a bit hard to describe. “I think I said something like Minor Threat crossed with ‘Eight Miles High’ by The Byrds,“ Wiesner said. “But of course we sound nothing like that. Our “sound” just happens to be what it sounds like when we all play together.”- Format

MARTIN HANNETT & STEVE HOPKINS
All Sorts Of Heroes
[engl] From the shrapnel of the unlikely collision point where Mancunian post-punk royalty collides with sci- cinema and art house animation, this obscure diamond in the rough shines a new light on the Northern DIY era providing disc detectives with a whole new punk funk perspective. Recorded in 1976 by Invisible Girls’ Steve Hopkins and Martin Hannett for a truly bizarre stop-motion animation called All Sorts OF Heroes, this hard edged funk instrumental theme reveals another side to this versatile production team joining the hidden dots between Hannett’s own discoid experiments with ESG, Gyro, A Certain Ratio and the mythical Afro Express recordings from the same year. Embodying as much in common with 1970’s bass heavy European funk soundtracks by bands like Goblin and Placebo, as the expected parallels with John-Cooper Clarke’s backing tracks or early Happy Mondays, this early 1976 session is the perfect example of Hannett and Hopkins’ under-the-radar artistic commissions working to a storyboard brief in what has now become recognised as a fertile arena for lost lmic funk. Drawing historic parallels with Leeds-based Graeme Miller and Steve Shill’s home recorded DIY soundtracks for The Moomins animation and accentuating the connection between Manchester based animation house Cosgrove Hall (Dangermouse/Chorlton And The Wheelies) and its employees Bernard Sumner, John Squire and members of Gerry And The Holograms, this lost recording adds kudos to a quirky micro-niche and reveals another dimension to Northern anti- pop’s snarky personality. Pressed here by Finders Keepers for the first time on vinyl, in close accordance with the wishes of Steve Hopkins himself, this custom-composed track originally appeared on the short lm by Rick Megginson and Steve Hughes which was shown at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1976 where it might have otherwise remained, preserved in an 8mm lm box up until now. As relevant today as it was then, this closely recorded, cosmic cartoon, slappy funk theme provided the films backdrop for a workshop montage scene where an aardvarkian spaceman constructs a giant metal face robot which might well leave fans of Madlib and MF Doom fans pondering time travel?! Like much of the lost and unreleased projects that stalled on the peripheries of early proto-Madchester, including the disco-pogo music of Spider King, Gerry And The Holograms, The 48 Chairs, Naf and The Mothmen, this record has been frozen in time waiting for the wider marathon of independent pop to catch up! Presented here faithful the 45 format of choice, this 7” might well be another missing link between your Rabid, Absurd and Factory records, backed with another lesser- known Invisible girls recording Scandinavian Wastes which has also been begging for its first vinyl outing since its recording in the early 1980’s. Another historical bucket list release for Finders Keepers Records outernational discography, leaving zero stones unturned, even the ones under our own doorstep.- Format

Barry
[engl] Marvin are a three piece band from Montpellier France. Two years of marathon songwriting sessions, passionate collaboration, and meticulous engineering have resulted in Barry, their third album, second for Africantape and the first in the USA for Sick Room Records LTD. Marvin is known across Europe for their frenetic live shows, and this record is an attempt to capture the feeling. Like three mighty gods, Emilie, Greg and Fred use all their powers to create some of the most glorious, sexy electro-punk to sweep across the landscape. Imagine that a storm is brewing, the heavens torn asunder. From the west you have solid, riff-heavy rock and roll, the electricity of AC/DC infused with the venom of the Jesus Lizard, blowing through town like a fierce wind. From the south we see another current approaching, bombastic, throbbing, sensual, Eno-inspired, big-beat electronica. These two forces collide and intermix to produce music that is upbeat, energetic and boisterous. The different elements hit you at different times, the visceral rumble of an 808, the squeal of a synth, thrashy-swirly live drum fills, guitar licks that pop and shimmer like lightning, all in all serious torrent of sound that ignites the whole room and gets everyone dancing. Drummer Greg Marvin adds, “We basically made this record because we love touring and were tired of playing the same songs at our gigs.” For that matter, to keep things fresh, Marvin has joined up on the road with colleagues and friends Pneu, Papier Tigre and Electric Electric, forming La Colonie de Vacances, a quadraphonic project were each band plays one corner of the room, with the audience standing in the middle, creating a one-of-a-kind experience, and managing to shape these affinities into a single exciting live act. Keeping things fun, keeping people excited, and keeping music alive is what this band is all about. RIYL: The VSS, Trans Am, Civil Civic, Holy Fuck, Chevreuil- Format

MARVIN
Hangover The Top

[engl] Massicot’s latest album occupies a strange and Wonderful Reuleaux triangle situated between the traditional spiritual story telling mysticism of North European pagan folklore, latin and middle eastern inspired polyrythms and post punk. It’s meandering arrangements are full and juicy, yet formed from the simplest elements, they are minimal, sculpted and refined. Bouncing and multitimbral percussive tapestries are coupled with thick pulsating baselines to form tightly wound rolling beats, accented by citric guitar hooks that bring to mind the percussive pique and jag of glenn Branca or talking heads and soothed by Latvian chant-like and choral vocal melodies, Massicot choreograph a sort of carnival carousel dance eternal that locks in the mind and lures the body. The groove is key, mechanical, yet nuanced, seductive and human.- Format

Edge Of The Planet
[engl] It's the year 2019. The future has arrived. And so have THE MIND. A cross-country collaboration made possible by modern technologies but driven by that ancient spirit of creative cooperation between like-minded musical peers. Who are these people you ask? Would calling them two guys from HOMOSTUPIDS and DRYROT summon thoughts of screaming loud guitar rock and aggressive tempos? Perhaps I should refer to them as being members of URANIUM ORCHARD and PLEASURE LEFTISTS. That will get your head somewhere in the area code necessary to digest what has been laid down for us here. To add that they've also played in FACTORYMEN and COSMIC SAND DOLLARS should then make you raise an eyebrow just enough to realize that this LP goes out THERE to the perimeter. It's hard to pin down. Sci-fi post-punk new-wave punk-rock. It's beautiful and rhythmic and weird. Robotic and organic. Future primitive. And I haven't even mentioned the vocals yet - radiant sonic transmissions tuned in straight out of the ether. A girl's voice to tie it all together with an elegant Gordian knot, giving warm life to the cold musical machinery. The cryptic lyrics she's singing so beautifully should not alarm you at all. The record is called 'Edge of the Planet'. The trip to get there starts now.. RICH KRONEISS (Termbo)- Format

MONO
Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined
"Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined" Tokyo, Japan's Mono are a peculiar group. While most bands offer up their sincerest and most genuine recordings in their infancy and spend the rest of their careers trying desperately to rediscover their youthful energy, Mono's trajectory has been quite the opposite. Their early recordings are a visceral homage to their past and present heroes--the documents of a band boasting an impressive symphony of sound in spite of their relatively small line-up. These days, they have become one of the most passionately aggressive rock bands of the last decade, executing their soaring crescendos, titanic sheets of distortion and dark melodies with the delicacy and precision of a folded paper crane. This flourish of hopeful creativity was captured by Steve Albini in the form of the eight pieces that make up their third album Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined. More lush and orchestral than previous recordings, the album couples an overall slow-melting ambience with a thunderous drive that reaches far greater heights than the band's earlier work.- Format

Hamtramck '16
[engl] After being on tour for much of 2015, Toronto-born singer and producer Daniel Benjamin found himself in a transitional phase. Burnt out from playing over one hundred shows that year, he parted ways with longtime friend and collaborator Maddy Wilde. He then relocated to Detroit, Michigan, settling in the diverse and densely populated neighbourhood of Hamtramck. Over the next year, Daniel immersed himself in Detroit’s dance music and DJ culture, which influenced the recordings he produced in his small room on Belmont Street. The tracks were rough, but luminous and very much homemade. Hamtramck '16 truly captured moments of self-enjoyment, of being in a new place with new friends, relaxed and open to exploring new ideas. The album is a humble documentation of Moon King’s shift into the domain of disco and synth-pop. Previously released via Montreal label Arbutus Records as a limited-edition cassette in 2017, our Petit Signal foundation is now releasing Hamtramck ‘16 for the first time on vinyl.- Format

Initially, when conceiving the album in 2021, it was intended to be lighter, melancholic and somewhat danceable while maintaining the basic sonic style and aesthetics of the previous albums. However, the Russian invasion in Ukraine slowed down the work and made serious changes to the general idea of the album. The main theme of the album is the war. There are no specific stories or descriptions of the events of the war. It's more of an abstract and emotional thing. First impressions, moods or emotions experienced during certain events. Pain of loss, sadness, fear, hatred, anger, and aggression are all part of 'Svitaye, Palaye'.- Format
