[engl] Copenhagen, Denmark. Not the most likely place for a band to emerge with the obvious surfing pedigree of El Ray. The band show a versatility of sound and an ear for catchy, toe tapping melody which takes them beyond the cliches that can often be associated with the surfing genre. Combining a fresh, modern style with a healthy nod to the past, 'surf with a twist' El Ray have managed to achieve a new, classic sound.

[engl] Green Cookie records paying tribute to the one of the very first surf bands from LA among with Jon & the Nightriders and the Surf Raiders. Starting in the early 80's, South Bay Los Angeles' own Halibuts played instro surf music when it wasn't even hip. All but one of the members in the band surfed, unusual at the time as well. Therefore, we collect all their top songs from their albums (3 of them on a new remix) and we present to you Hangin' Fourteen on limited collectable vinyl record.

[engl] "And in my German words, we totally screwed up." According to JAKA, this unsuccessful sentence on VW's unsuccessful environmental protection through driving a car concept characterizes the twentieth century, which can probably be identified as the previous peak of the Anthropocene that gives the title. The "Golden" is, how can it be otherwise with JAKA, meant ironically, because the lyrics of the album move in the well-known cosmos of consumer and system criticism and general misanthropy. Sonically, there is an intro with “Verklappt”, which for some reason is a single song, but which seamlessly transitions into the second, “Weiss”, which again features clean vocals, which irritated me a bit when I first heard it. After that it actually goes on musically in a typical JAKA way: sampled quotes, nice ideas such as a key tone that supports the guitar in "The Average Man", breakdowns, nice riffs, guitar tinkering, fast, fast drums, grunted lyrics and all of it well produced . Well, despite the English title, everything at JAKA has stayed the same overall and that's a good thing. It is perhaps interesting that the band packs twenty songs into forty minutes, while some are only thirty seconds long, but others exceed the three-minute mark, "Tag 1 nach dem Menschen" is even over six minutes long and fades out. But I don't want to complain about little things here. - Ox

[engl] Los Apollos started out four years ago with Kahuna Kawentzmann (ex- Looney Tunes) on the surf guitar. After an intermezzo with Ralf Kilauea, Simon Rebohm, formerly of Spektrophon, proved to be made of just the right stuff to get the Los Apollos Space Surf back on the launching pad. Backing up the man’s irresistible Twang is the old team – Christoph Leich (drums, Die Sterne) and Thorsten ‘Taucher’ Weßel (Bass, ex Ostzonensuppenwürfelmachenkrebs). This space surfer trio likes variety – it can be anything from classic genre hits and Arabian surf to super-smooth South Sea exotica and goose-bump inducing versions of long-forgotten musical gems. And of course, there’s a steadily growing core of self-penned hits! Whatever it is though, it has to sound good. A certain elegance, yes that’s a priority, but with this new line-up, it can really let rip too. On the whole, it’s great dance music. Although every now and then, it might get a little melancholic too. Does it get any better than that? We don’t think so. A debut 3 track CD "Mission to Halfmoon", produced by Christian Mevshas been released on MaterieRecords and shows have been performed across Germany and Italy, where Los Apollos had the honour to open Surfer Joe’s Diner at Livorno in March 2012. A truly unforgettable experience!

[engl] Los Venturas have to offer a warm, varied, powerful and danceable instrumental live set, with one single purpose at heart: throwing a decent party and set the scene for one hell of a night. Based on the Californian 60ies surf sound, they create a unique but accessible blend, fusing an array of different styles such as euro-instro, rock, funk soul, raï and gipsy. For over 14 years they have been touring all over Europe and even in California, where they recorded their latest albums ‘Kaleydoskop’ (LP -2011), ‘Paisley Beach’ (10” - 2013) and ‘Miles High’ (LP – 2016). Driven by positive vibes they bring their Euro-instro with a wink and a smile, providing just the right spark to set the night on fire.

[engl] After 18 years of playing, Los Venturas have marked their spot in the international scene of instrumental guitar music called ‘surf music’. That label however is too small for what the band brings its crowd: there’s exotica, balkan, ska, soul, rock ‘n roll … Some have already uniquely labelled it ‘world surf music’. The band itself rather sticks with ‘penetrating guitar instrumentals™’. Playtime! features 11 originals, each of them a world on its own thanks to the use of multiple instruments, techniques and the added value of some top notch guest appearances.

[engl] 10 years after its release on CD finally this legendary album on vinyl! Lost Acapulco are a surf rock band formed in the port of Acapulco, Mexico in 1996. One of their main features is the use of Mexican wrestling masks (Lucha libre). Pioneers without a doubt of the surf scene in Mexico. Considered a cult band, which since their inception in 1996 have been characterized by its powerful and vertiginous live shows. Power that the public has been transforming into frenzied and colorful tribal dances, with wrestling masks, flowery shirts and beach accessories; paraphernalia that the fans have gradually incorporated into their shows. Their debut album "4" was produced by Danny Amis (Los Straightjackets). Their music has been included in films of the "new Mexican cinema", such as Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas, Perfume de Violetas, Atlético San Pancho, Matando Cabos, Santos Peregrinos and in animations by Jorge Alderete for MTV and Nickelodeon. They have performed in the most important festivals around the world; During their numerous and extensive tours they have taken their music to places such as: Finland, Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, the United States, and Japan just to name a few. The current members of the band are: Mr. Ramirez Acapulco (Bass); Crunchy Acapulco (Guitar); Reverendo Acapulco (Guitar); Warpig Acapulco (Drums).

[engl] Funky garage. Afrogaragemambo. Psychedelic voodoo groove. Oh dear... The Mutants are a tough little bastard to exactly pin down what they're all about. But with music this cool, funky and with an all-out party on!-attitude you really shouldn't even care. The Mutants was originally started as an instrumental garage rock band in 1998. As The Mutants slowly began incorporating more rhythmic influences in their music, the line-up was fortified with a percussionist and a saxophone player. Some say the Finnish music scene would never be the same... The band released their first 7", "Le Mutant", in the summer of 2001 on a Finnish label Legal Records after which the band has released a bunch of singles and appeared on compilations worldwide.

[engl] The Sant Anna Bay Coconuts are 4 colleagues, friends but most of all an adopted family and they are based in Antwerp, Harbor City, Belgium. This is their second release with more exciting surf hawaiian and beachy sounds.

[engl] I really love to review music that does not take an entirely definable direction but switches in between related genres and sometimes even styles that are based upon each other. This album can be put in the field of so called “library music”, sound records made for use in movies and TV productions, commercials and for similar purposes to enhance the tension of the atmosphere in very dramatic scenes or accompany the more mellow and relaxed moments with lush harmony carpets. And from all these “library” albums, this is one of the most sought after by collectors around the world due to the musical quality of its content. And so we sit back, relax, close our eyes and get ready for the movie that only exists in our imagination. The STRINGTRONICS take us on a journey from the dark city gorges of any North American metropolis where steaming hot funky and jazzy rhythms amalgamate and get clothed in a veil of lush string arrangements to the banks of the river Seine where painters draw portraits of tourists and people sit in the sun and relax to the typical chanson melodies full of melancholy but also joy of life. In there is a tinge of the 1950 exotica music showing up here and there through Latin grooves and some flimsy elements of rock shine through the whole soundscape as well. It is fantastic but not easy to categorize, could appeal to fans of US movie soundtracks from the early 70s and late 60s, created by folks like George Clinton but also be loved by people who enjoy the early works of electronic pop pioneers such as Walter Carlos and finally by space age pop aficionados. It is all in there and the reference of some artists drawing or painting is not far from what the music feels like. The participating musicians paint their melody – and rhythm patterns with an enormous feeling for depth and emotion. A masterpiece!

[engl] The Incredible Sucking Spongies is an instrumental combo originated in 1997 in the city of Antwerp (Belgium). Their repertoire is rooted in surf music but combines influences that go far beyond the limits of the genre, resulting in an infectious and original sound. Besides the Spongies originals they also present often obscure covers. Over the years they built up a notorious live reputation, but they only released 1 limited edition album themselves in 2003: Let there be surf!.. The last few years, the band was put on hold mainly to focus on different side projects, but now they're back in full effect with new material and a new vinyl album on Green Cookie Records.
