    JAGGED EDGE aka OFF–SET, THE

    A change is gonna come

[engl] Part of the mystique of the ’60s garage legacy is that the bands seemed to put all of their considerable talents into one or two singles, and that was it. But behind every 45 there often lurked a handful of equally killer tunes – performed or even recorded, but never released at the time. So many bands had the potential to make it but there was very little room at the top. The Jagged Edge from Brooklyn, New York, seemed to have it all – the chops, an excellent and decent–selling debut 45, and even competent management. They’d performed with a veritable who’s who of big–name artists, and they seemed poised for better things. But it all went downhill suddenly, beginning with a threatening lawsuit over their name. Crucial momentum was lost and the Jagged Edge never reached the prominence they deserved. Now the exposure they warranted all along is finally here. Break–A–Way presents the bands first complete long player incl. their two sharp 45s and for the first time a fistful of six vintage demos. The LP has the bands 1966 all–time garage classic debut 45, "You Can´t Keep A Good Man Down b/w How She’s Hurtin Me" and their second single release "A Change Is Gonna Come" b/w their wild psychedelic raga classic "Xanthia" recorded under the moniker "Off–Set". Additionally there are two alternate takes of single tracks and four completely unreleased 1965/66 recordings such as the psych/punker "Lies I Spoke" completely with psychy effects and a raga–esque break; the strong moody folkrocker "Look In Her Eyes" as well as "Reflections" and "Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself", two tracks from the poppier side of the band. This collection proves : the Jagged Edge were way ahead of their times and finally carve out their slice of rock history. All tracks are painstakingly remastered for the garage connoisseurs listening pleasure. The 10–track vinyl LP comes in a full colour cover and with an LP sized insert featuring rare pics and the bands complete and detailed history as told by former members Art Steinman and Harley Wishner.

    3 HÜR-EL

    3 Hür-El

[engl] One of the very few, if not the only one, Turkish groups not doing any covers but only self- penned compositions, the mighty 3 Hür- El were three brothers: Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. Having played together for their whole life, it was in the late 60's when they took the 3 Hür- El name, and they released two wonderful albums that we're now making available for you vinyl freaks. This one's their debut, originally released in 1972. A brilliant set of Turkish ethno- influenced folk- rock tracks with a psychedelic feel, some great electric guitar and fantastic Eastern percussion. A very rare album now available again and coming with an insert, with liners and photos.

[engl] ...And their second longplayer which came out in 1976 also on Diskötur, this is an absolutely killer of an album and easily one of the top Turkish ones. It has a more Western feel...Feridun was here infected by fuzz virus and his two- arm guitar (one for guitar, one for saz) will give you no rest. Also there's much more drums than percussion now, so we get an astounding blend of psychedelic rock with Turkish tradition, plenty of distorted fuzz guitar and electric saz. Comes with an insert, with liners and photos.

    31 FLAVORS, THE

    Hair

[engl] In the late 60s, a bunch of mysterious psychedelic exploitation albums were released by the budget Crown label in the US. Issued under different band names (The Firebirds, Underground Electrics, 31 Flavors?) , they were recorded by an anonymous group of studio musicians. ?Hair? by 31 Flavors is the counterpart to ?Light My Fire? by The Firebirds. Along with demented raw garage covers of ?Hair? and ?Aquarius?, it contains some of the heaviest, fuzzed out exploitation sounds ever committed to vinyl. You can hear echoes of Blue Cheer, Hendrix and Sabbath, featuring proto- doom, heavy- psych bombs like ?Distortions of darkness One of the best of the psych- ploitation LPs, with more fuzzzz than a dozen 1971 private press hardrockers. Great raw live feel, wild playing and excellent fuzz riffs? Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives)

    AFTER ALL

    After All

[engl] Hailing from Florida, After All was formed by well- experienced musicians with an R&B, jazz and blues background who hooked up with poetry writer Linda Hargrove to record an ambitious album influenced by acid- rock and psychedelic, early progressive sounds. Originally released in 1969 on the Athena label, the album is now considered an obscure classic. Top level psych/prog dominated by Hammond organ / guitar plus explosive drumming. Heres a welcome new reissue in original artwork plus remastered sound, insert with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl. ''Overlooked but pretty good moody late 1960s organ & guitar psych- rock with a Doors influence. The album is dominated by an unusual creeping menace a la Freeborne...'' AGAMENON

    Todos ríen de mí

[engl] Hippie group from Madrid, this is no doubt the most acid psychedelic rock album recorded in Spain in the 70's. This is their sole album, originally released in 1975 on the Explosion label and a very rare and collectable item. No one knew anything about the group members until now, it had been even rumoured to be some Argentinian guys living in Spain...but no, the group was formed by 2 female and 4 male and the brainhead was Carlos Garcia, who sadly passed away not long ago and to whom this reissue is dedicated. 10 tracks, 8 of them in English and 2 in Spanish, all originals and fantastic; there's lots of heavy acid fuzz guitar here, probably the wildest fuzz recorded in Spain (''Todos rien de mi'', ''Send me'' or ''I need money''), and also some great sunshine psych- pop (''Cuco go fly'', ''Al salir el sol''), and it's all very well packed with some of the best multi- vocal harmonies you can find in a Spanish record ever. A truely fantastic album that we strongly recommend!!! This first ever reissue comes with an insert with some never- seen- before pictures and infos about the band, plus a repro of a very rare band poster. Dig the cover artwork too!!!

    AIRBUS

    Test flight

[engl] West Coast Consortium spinoff Airbus never played live or even released a record during their 1970- 1972 lifespan, instead spending their entire subterranean existence holed up in their self- owned London studio, writing and performing innumerable high quality demos and then attempting to place those songs with major label acts. But, more by accident than design, they came to leave behind THE Great Lost Early 70s British Pop Album - a jaw- dropping collision of superb songs, dazzling vocal harmonies, intelligent lyrics and hook- laden melodies. Here, then, is the strange, previously untold story of a band that didn?t leave so much as a footprint in the musical sands, but recorded a greater number of three- minute pop nuggets than almost all of their contemporaries. 500 copies limited pressing in 180g vinyl with detailed liner notes.

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP

    Edip Akbayram (1974)

[engl] Edip Akbayram's a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey- fro and knee length colored robes. Akbayram's voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This 1st album collects precious singles from 1972- 74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the ba?lama, but retrofitted with hard plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz- wah guitars and keyboards. AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Nedir Ne Degildir?

[engl] As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi- eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mo?ollar and Bari? Manço's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo- covered voice. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). Vinyl comes with exact reproduction of the original gatefold pop- up sleeve.

    Singles Overview 1974-1977

[engl] B- sides from hard to find 45s that never made onto albums during singer Edip Akbayram's psychedelic period with the awesome Dostlar as backing band. A tiny guy with a great big, easy, open voice, Akbayram glues together disparate arrangements that put ridiculous analog synthesizers up next to mystic poetry that's hundreds of years old. Anatolian melodies are enveloped by western touches, like breakdowns for cosmic whispering, slammin' organ, or wild phasing effects on folk instruments that were never meant to support them. AKKOR, KAMURAN

    Kamuran Akkor

[engl] Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid- 1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi- rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due? So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real- life Stevie Nicks next- door. Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971- 75. Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high- profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like ''Turkish Freakout Vol. 2'' or ''Istanbul 70'', but there's way more to discover, and now you can.

    ALPAY

    Yekte

[engl] In Turkey, psychedelia wasn?t just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed- out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid- 60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah- ed out guitar solos. If you're ready to go beyond Baris & Erkin, this is the perfect spot. ANT TRIP CEREMONY

    24 Hours

[engl] Some albums just exist due to the fact that the band is about to break up and with that knowledge in their mind the members wish to capture at least a tiny bit of the magic they created playing their stuff at rehearsals and concerts. These kind of of albums are way more personal like a picture book of memories than records made for the commercial market. '24 hours' by ANT TRIP CEREMONY is such an album recorded by a bunch of high school students soon to part ways after their exams. It is nearly impossible to get hold of an original of which only 300 copies existed. Fans of late 1960s jammy psychedelic rock and dreamy folky singer / songwriter style tunes will go crazy for this collection of songs. Among them you find coverversions of Eric Andersen, a well known singer / songwriter of the day, Allen Toussaint, a famous songwriter, producer and soul musician, Billy Roberts, who wrote the ultimate rock classic ?Hey Joe? as well as a couple of contributions of people close to the band next to a handful of originals. The band had a quite unique expression while their overall style fitted well into their era. Some more or less intense but never really heavy rock songs, some mellow tunes that make your spirit drift away into gardens of delight painted in surrealistic colours. Fans of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE BYRDS, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE CHARLATANS and other similar heroes and legends of the late 60s West Coast scene will dig this primitive version of the super stars. The songs here are all incredible and definitely made to last for a lifetime. And so they enchant fans of relaxed rock for nearly 50 years already. A lost crown jewel of 60s music.

    ARCESIA

    Reachin' Arcesia

[engl] A classic since the year zero of rare records collecting and the ''Incredible Strange Music'' scene, ''Reachin' Arcesia'' has always been the cause of many rumours and bizarre stories. We set the record straight with this, the first ever legit reissue of this legendary album, featuring detailed liner notes telling the real story of the great John Arcesi for the first time. Arcesi was a veteran singer of the big- band era who in the early 70s recorded a pop album with help from an anonymous hip studio musicians. The album was released in a private edition of 300 copies and most of them were given away to family and friends. In the late 80s, one of those copies was unearthed by rare record dealer Paul Major, who was one of the first persons to appreciate the singularities of ''Reachin' Arcesia''. Since then, the album, which mixes over the top crooner vocals with late 60s acid- rock / pop arrangements is now considered a lounge- psych / real people masterpiece. Gatefold sleeve with original artwork on back and new cover design on front. Detailed liner notes inside telling the real story of John Arcesi and rare photos.

    ATHANOR

    Flashback

[engl] Chicago, early 70s. Greg Herriges is obsessed with Lennon, 12- string guitars and far- out psychedelic sounds. Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys- Hollies- Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage- college bands during the 60s. Combining their mutual love for Sixties music, Athanor was born. With the help of top studio musicians, they recorded and self- released three 45s between 1973 and 1975 (the first one produced by Mark Breyer, with whom Rick had played in pre- Skooshny band Brevity) which are now highly sought- after by fans of obscure psychedelic pop. All of them are featured here in stellar sound taken from the master tapes along with previously unreleased studio tracks and superb sounding home demos (1973- 1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006 in the same vein as their vintage recordings. Athanors music features impressive songwriting & musicianship, a collision of Beatlesque harmony vocals, Rickenbacker & Guild 12- string guitars, occasional fuzz- wah leads, Fender Rhodes, studio effects. Psychedelic proto- power pop highly recommended to anyone into Lazy Smoke, Badfinger, Only Ones, Emitt Rhodes, Rockin? Horse, Creme Soda.?

''Perseverance kills our game'' was released as a private edition of 500 copies, which were only distributed among friends and relatives. Despite being a home- made project (the album was recorded in just one day!) the result was stunning.Totally early 70s sounding electric folk- rock with flute, piano, bass, drums, and killer fuzz guitar. Mostly instrumental with a few vocals in English. It alternates delicate acoustic passages with devastating fuzz leads, sounding like Fairport Convention jamming with early Ash Ra Tempel. The album closes with an extended 11 minute track on which guitar player Daan Slaman starts playing leads like a madman, creating layers and layers of liquid acid- fuzz guitar. It has to be heard to be believed! First ever LP / CD reissue, done in cooperation with the original band members. Insert / booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Richard Allen.

    BAKER, CHET

    Chet Baker and the Strings

[engl] Recorded in 1953 and 1954 with a veritable who's who of West Coast cool jazz including backing from Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, as well as arrangements from Jack Montrose, and Shorty Rogers, Chet Baker & Strings is a beautiful and airy collection of some of Baker's most sultry trumpet work. The string section perfectly complements the cool jazz quintet backing and makes this one of the Baker's finest and most unique sets.

    BAZAR

    Drabantbyrock

[engl] Kick- ass psychedelic / progressive hard- rock from Norway! Bazar was one of the most hard- working progressive bands from Scandinavia. This is their killer second album from 1974. Wah- wah fuelled guitar action, organ, flute, melodic vocals and radical lyrics. ''Drabantbyrock'' combines heavy numbers, West Coast guitar jams and dreamy moments, featuring the superb guitar playing of Bent Patey. Highly recommended for those into Swedish hard- rock bands such as November.

    BEAU

    Creation

[engl] Originally released for John Peel's Dandelion label in 1971, ''Creation'' was the second album by underground folk troubadour Trevor ''Beau'' Midgley, recorded with psych band The Way We Live as backing group. Influenced by Tom Paxton, Leadbelly and Dylan, Beau started to write his own songs in the late 60s. After trying to secure a contract with Elektra Records with no success, he was approached by Clive Selwood (Elektra UK) and John Peel, who were launching a new label, Dandelion Records. Beau signed to them and released his eponymous debut album in 1969. For his second effort, Beau decided to experiment with a more folk- rock sound and add to the mix some avant- garde influences. Jim Milne (lead guitar and bass) and Steve Clayton (drums) from Dandelion stablemates The Way We Live / Tractor were the perfect backing band for him. ''Creation'' is a brilliant psych- folk / acid- folk offering with superb 12- string guitars, heartfelt vocals, studio effects and occasional acid- fuzz guitar. Beau's avant- garde influences came to the fore on the title track, which verges into White Noise territory. The album closes with ''Silence Returns'', featuring one of the most ear- splitting fuzz assaults ever committed to wax, courtesy of Jim Milne.
