LIGHTNING HOPKINS
Thinkin' and Worryin' (Aladdin Singles)
[engl] Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the greatest and most popular authentic blues artists. These songs weren't his first recordings but they were the first released under his own name. Although he did record with other musicians and even with full bands it's these acoustic classics that best illustrate his art and they are some of the most endearing blues tracks ever recorded. Includes the popular songs 'Katie Mae Blues', 'Short Haired Woman' and his biggest chart hit 'Shotgun Blues'. A true genius of the genre this Lightnin' Hopkins release is a must have for blues and R&B fans.- Format

Folk Singer
[engl] I do not really need to introduce this man to you, do I? Well, for legions of youngsters who think that THE BLUES PILLS (one of my favorite bands around by the way) would play them the hipster blues seem to have no idea about who Muddy Waters - real name McKinley Morganfield - really is. Well, being cited as the father of modern Chicago blues, an influence on folk, jazz, blues, rock'n'roll and even heavy rock and composer of quite a few popular standards we should pull him back from the depths of oblivion. The album at hand is his forth longplayer from 1964 and his first and only all acoustic affair of which originals from the very first and scarce pressing fetch prices up to 1000,00 US$ in good condition. Backed by some big names from the blues community such as Willie Dixon on standing bass and a young Buddy Guy on second acoustic guitar Waters created an album with “Folk singer” that was reduced to the bare bones. That means on the other hand that every of the few notes played on wooden guitars is so meaningful and vibrant. Even an acoustic version of a song like “Good morning little schoolgirl” rocks the hell out of the speakers. It is a remake of a Sonny Boy Williamson composition and lives from the strongly pronounced guitarplay of Mr. Waters and his interaction with Buddy Guy. His voice comes very much upfront but since he is the commander and preacher man, the storyteller and wizard, that's another advantage of this record. There is much room in the sound, much space in between the instruments where passion and magic may flow and therefore you can hear with how much obsession Waters and Guy handle their instruments, while Dixon pulls out the most laid back bass lines he can´, not to disturb the master and his apprentice in firing smoking hot lead work from their fretboards even in an all acoustic manner. This is indeed one album that has much more to say than most over amplified rock efforts which came later. Just listen and be enchanted.- Format

Gran'mas I've never had
[engl] Here is an obscure slice of late-'60s killer Brazilian psychedelia ! Little is known about OS BRAZÕES except that they formed in Rio De Janeiro late in 1969 and that their main claim to fame was being picked by Gal Costa as her backing band when she was making her early, and hugely, influential forays into Tropicalia – her best and most psychedelic effort being the « Tuareg » song. It turns out her sidemen had a pretty great album in them as well; they created a synthesis of North American rock & roll and native Brazilian styles, with results similar to those being explored by Tropicalia ringleaders Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, whom the band cover on this record. Buzzing fuzz guitars, pop vocals, space-out effects and exotic percussions : the band blend ethnic rhythms with some jazzy, western-influenced pop-rock before launching into weird euphoric space trips! Miguel de Deus (vocals, rhythm guitar & arrangements), Roberto (vocals, lead guitar & arrangements), Taco (vocals, bass & arrangements), Eduardo (drums arrangements) and Mandrake (percussion). For the first time on vinyl again since original 1969 RGE release with a new cover, hand-silk-screen printed. Original copies are long time impossible to find, even in Brazil. All tracks have been remastered. A very special red feather is inserted in each sleeve.- Format

The Old Church
[engl] In 1972, the renowned and singular folk musician Roscoe Holcomb left his home in rural Daisy, Kentucky and embarked on a west coast tour with Mike Seeger, which included a performance at The Old Church in Portland, Oregon - a beautiful Carpenter Gothic church built in 1882. Decades later, two particular reels were discovered deep within a pile of 1/4” tape in a shadowy corner of the KBOO Community Radio archives in Portland. Incredibly, those tapes contained the sole surviving evidence of a strikingly intimate and raw performance by Roscoe Holcomb, whose cascading and haunting banjo, guitar and voice echoed and saturated the room and hushed audience. In contrast to Roscoe’s rarely documented (and at times restrained) live performances at folk festivals and television programs, Roscoe seems to have felt more familiar and spiritually moved in the old church that night. Heard here are standout versions of Appalachian folk-blues classics such as Single Girl, John Henry, East Virginia Blues, Swanno Mountain and more. Once cited as Bob Dylan’s favorite singer, Roscoe Holcomb appears at the peak of his powers here, showcasing his immense vocal talents on an extended a cappella version of “The Village Churchyard”. The recording itself is warm and mysterious, sounding like the room itself is alive with the spirit, while the rumbles of trucks and hints of city sounds peek through the walls from the outside streets. Recorded live at the Old Church, Portland, Oregon, 1972 160 gram black vinyl LP in gold & black color reverse-board jacket. Co-release with Jalopy Records.- Format

[engl] A true oddity - Side A features John Coltrane's meditation on the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing on September 15, 1963, an attack by the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, Alabama that killed four African-American girls. Alan Lomax's American Patchwork
[engl] A stunning 2xLP collection of music documented during Alan Lomax’s final American field recording sessions from 1978 to 1983. A completely overlooked and underrepresented period in American folk and blues history, this album includes performances by RL Burnside, Napoleon Strickland, Boyd Rivers, Tommy Jarrell, and many more never before released on vinyl. 160gram double LP in deluxe gatefold jacket with extensive notes by Nathan Salsburg of the Lomax Archive. Cover art by Joe Light. Read on for more… From 1978 to 1983, Alan Lomax and a video-crew travelled through the American South and Southwest, documenting its traditional music — miners, moonshiners, and Primitive Baptists in Kentucky; flat-footers, string bands, and Piedmont blues in North Carolina; Cajun cowboys, fiddlers, and zydeco stompers in French-speaking Louisiana; and fife-and-drum ensembles, gospel quartets, former railroad track-liners, levee-camp muleskinners, and players on the pre-war blues circuit in Mississippi. This footage ultimately totaled some 350 hours and was edited into Lomax's "American Patchwork" series, which aired on American public television in 1991. But given the strictures of the form, hundreds of discrete performances and compelling scenes were left unseen and unheard. This set brings together some of the standout recordings Lomax made in his attempt to document the last vestiges of the “local surround” in Mississippi, Appalachia, and Louisiana. Intimate performances by R.L. Burnside, Tommy Jarrell, Boyd Rivers, Napoleon Strickland and more, newly remastered by Timothy Stollenwerk and never before released on vinyl.- Format

Saved & Sanctified - Songs Of The Jade Label
[engl] The rawest, DIY gospel ever resurrected. The West Side of Chicago was just an annex of the deep rural South for Gene Autry Cash and his flock of recent Old Dominion transplants looking to cut their fiery, unadorned sounds indelibly to plastic. His Jade label absorbed those God-fearing artists: family bands with wailing kids and barely amateur groups sourced from local parishes, infused with reverberations of country and western and deep soul. Glinting authenticity shines from every track like a diamond in the unpolished rough - each group completely convinced that salvation comes through song.- Format
