Wede Harer Guzo

MILLIE JACKSON
Caught Up
[engl] Millie Jackson’s love triangle masterpiece back on vinyl. The return to LP format restores the framework of Millie Jackson’s thematic musical saga: her perception of the affair with Mr Jody is related on Side One, while Mrs Jody’s experience is related on Side Two. Millie draws a crooked line back to the mythic, habitual ladies’ man “Jody”, as outlined in 1920s and 30s blues recordings such as ‘Joe The Grinder’ and ‘Joe Grind’. During the 1970s the inveterate lover man returned in Johnnie Taylor’s ‘Jody’s Got Your Girl And Gone’, Bobby Newsome’s ‘Jody Come Back And Get Your Shoes’ and other songs but the character was not referenced for the entire duration of an album until Millie’s “Caught Up”. Millie Jackson had already enjoyed considerable success, with three exceptional albums and eight R&B Top 30 singles for Spring Records, before her move from New York to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Alabama to record with the pre-eminent Muscle Shoals Swampers rhythm section and producer Brad Shapiro. The result was an instant soul masterpiece. The suite of compositions that comprise “Caught Up” unfolds with Millie’s epic interpretation of Luther Ingram’s 1972 hit ‘If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right’. Her thrilling rendition is presented in two parts, with the dynamic, six-minute ‘The Rap’ in between, outlining, in no uncertain terms, her positive and negative observations on conducting an affair with a married man. During her own funky composition ‘All I Want Is A Fighting Chance’ she confronts Mrs Jody in the street and admits to having an affair with her husband. Side One closes with Millie in more reflective mood, apologising to Mr Jody for her outburst but confessing, in the words of Phillip Mitchell’s stunning song, ‘I’m Tired Of Hiding’. Side Two opens with Mrs Jody informing her spouse ‘It’s All Over But The Shouting’ – another fine, driving Millie Jackson composition. The Phillip Mitchell-penned ballad ‘It’s Easy Going’ marks an attempt at reconciliation before an incredible cover of Bobby Womack’s ‘I’m Through Trying To Prove My Love To You’ admits defeat. The album closes with Mrs Jody wistfully recalling her first encounter with her husband, in Millie’s remarkable transformation of Bobby Goldsboro’s 1973 smash ‘Summer (The First Time)’. You can now listen again to this landmark concept album as Millie Jackson intended – on vinyl.- Format

MILLIE JACKSON
Still Caught Up
[engl] The sequel to Millie’s love triangle masterpiece “Caught Up”, now back on vinyl. Just weeks after the release of “Caught Up”, her best-selling concept album of 1974, soul diva Millie Jackson reconvened at Muscle Shoals Sound in Alabama with producer Brad Shapiro and the Swampers, the studio’s superlative rhythm section, to begin recording the sequel. Completed on 6 June 1975 and released on the Spring label not long after, “Still Caught Up” was somewhat overshadowed by the continuing success of “Caught Up”, but with hindsight it stands equal with that album. Side One opens from the standpoint of nightclub singer Mrs Jody, the abandoned wife, who dedicates her passionate performance of Tom Jans’ ‘Loving Arms’ to her wayward husband on their wedding anniversary. Mr Jody, an incorrigible womaniser, is in the audience and comes backstage, eager to rekindle their relationship. Mrs Jody reacts with glorious renditions of British songwriters Richard Kerr and Gary Osborne’s ‘Making The Best Of A Bad Situation’ and Millie Jackson’s own scathing ‘The Memory Of A Wife’. As the side closes, she relents and forgives him with the smouldering ‘Tell Her It’s Over’. Side Two is presented from the viewpoint of Mr Jody’s abandoned girlfriend. In ‘Do What Makes You Satisfied’ she bids Mr Jody farewell but predicts that he’ll be back before long because, in the words of songwriter Phillip Mitchell, ‘You Can’t Stand The Thought (Of Another Man Loving Me)’. Mrs Jody then returns to bring her husband home, to which the defiant girlfriend declares that she doesn’t care, as Mr Jody is just her ‘Leftovers’. The suite of songs closes as it began, with a cover of a country song – Mac Davis’ ballad ‘I Still Love You (You Still Love Me)’. In Jackson’s dramatic reading of the song, the girlfriend has become unhinged and is about to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Listen once more to the magnificent “Still Caught Up”, as Millie Jackson originally intended – as a vinyl album.- Format

Divinities of the Earth and the Waters
[engl] Mimika Orchestra's new album Divinities of the Earth and the Waters (PDV records) is finally out. Set in the mysterious world of the ancient Balkans, the album is a fusion of progressive and orchestral music, old Slavic and South Slavic / x-Yugoslav / Balkan folk music and contemporary jazz. It follows a story of a protagonist who sees himself as an effigy in a folk festival, finishing with the burning of the doll, i.e. metaphorically seeing the burning as a funeral for himself and for his society. It is a psychedelic / dreamy album dedicated to the late Oberon King (who was Mimika's previous drummer), to the Yugoslav identity and exposing the richness of Slavic folk music and rhythms as inspirations.- Format

She Is My Woman
[engl] She Is My Woman is Murphy William?s loose, funky and spontaneous call to the dance floor. It?s an infectious collection of good-time tunes that the band seem to be enjoying as much as the listener. Williams was a stalwart of the Nigerian music scene, joining Godwin Omabuwa?s Cassanova Dandies at 17 before becoming one of the two lead vocalist of The Apostles from Aba. He was famous for his distinctive four octave voice, a voice that legendary label boss, Godwin Tabansi decided was perfectly suited to the new disco sound that was gripping Nigeria. The title track gets the party started with Felix Liberty providing the good-time guitar riffs, Friday Pozzo on congas and Sonny Enang keeping it light on keyboards. The vibe is tight and bright, breathy a breezy charm into disc-tied versions of Igbo folk songs ?Selense? and ?Ima Obi O.? The undoubted highlight of the album is ?Get On Up?, a certifiable disco classic that would slay any dance floor anywhere in the world. It?s funky, it?s fun and by the time the lyrics implore the listener to get on up and dance their feet have already been convinced by the music. Put it on and it?s guaranteed to get any party started. - Peter Moore, www.africanrevolutions.com- Format

O.T. SYKES
First Love
[engl] Mr. O.T. Sykes is often and fondly called ?The Singing Dentist? but it?s far from a joke. Dr. Sykes, who till this day never gave up his day job, chooses to do only top quality music. He will not sell out to an already overcrowded pop-market as this extremely well respected and very soulful LP from 1981 so eloquently proves. Within an international circle of connoisseurs O.T.Sykes ranks among the very best of soul singers. This is true soul music to the max and is written, played and produced by Jeffrey Singleton (The Frat / Frat Band / Autofrat) and Mr. Sykes himself, plus the cream of the rich music scene in Memphis, TN. OBATALA
Obatala
[engl] This well produced strong disco funk album is a hidden gem. The original is on many wants lists and rarely turns up. Heady disco funk from the glory days of the Miami soul scene in the 70?s. This smoking album by the group Obatala is tight in a good way. Core funk energy mixed with some added strings and horns. A mode that's funky club, but never straight disco at all. Titles include ''April'', ''Shades Of September'', ''Disco Party'', ''Funk-A-Fried'', ''Tight Rope'', and ''Work It Out''. PALMEIRA
Palmeira
[engl] Can you imagine a Dutch band playing top- notch 60s- 70s sounding Brazilian music? Originally released as a private pressing in 1983, Palmeiras only album will please any lover of bossa, jazzy and latin- fusion sounds. Beautiful femme vocals, superb musicianship featuring the awesome lead electric guitar of Jeanette van der Pligt, self- penned songs and choice covers of Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto and Rita Lee among others. Palmeira was a Brazilian styled band formed by Angelo Noce Santoro (ex- Cosmic Dealer) along with some Dutch, North American and Brazilian musicians. The group existed from 1979 till 1985, playing lots of gigs at jazz and night clubs in Holland. In 1983 they released their only album in a private edition of 500 copies on Angelos ANS label. A cult item for fans of Bossa- Jazz, it was first reissued as a limited edition in Japan, now long out of print. Heres a new reissue featuring no less than six bonus tracks on our CD edition. These bonus (one more over the previous Japanese CD release) come from Angelos tape archive and all of them were recorded the same year as the album, including some great covers of giants like Edu Lobo and Jorge Ben among others.- Format

Shaka Bundu

PHAROAH SANDERS
Izipho Zam
[engl] 2018 REPRESS! Popular and increasingly in demand, IZIPHO ZAM (my gifts) falls into the ?rare? category among record collectors and is a gift to fans of master Pharoah Sanders. This demand is partially galvanized by the fact that ?Prince Of Peace? has become an inspirational mine to Hip Hop artists and is much loved by samplers. Izipho Zam is Pharoah Sander?s 3rd album, initially recorded in january 1969, it was originally released on the Strata-East label in 1973. On Izipho Zam Sanders and his band take you on a journey into another world providing an amazing experience! Passionate, intense and free, Sanders saxophone especially, is exquisite, pouring out its soul telling a story of its own. Hailed by peers as the best tenor saxophonist in the world, Pharoah Sanders is a legend in Jazz music. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of free jazz and is the mentor of jazz giant, saxophonist Robert Stewart. Born in 1940 into a musical family as Farell Sanders in Arkansas, he first played the clarinet before switching to tenor saxophone in High school. After High school he moved to California to study music and art. In 1961 Sanders moved to New York where he often played gigs with a number of free jazz dignitaries including Billy Higgins, Sun Ra and Don Cherry. His name ?Pharoah? was given to him by Sun Ra, who was his bandleader then. It was during one of these gigs that he met John Coltrane who became his mentor. While playing with Coltrane, Sanders inevitably rose to prominence due to his very distinctive tenor saxophone sound. - Rachel Kinoti, www.everland-music.com > Licensed by Strata East Records, Inc.- Format

Africa
[engl] Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents: the official reissue of this fantastic album, back available on vinyl for the first time since 1987. Available as a deluxe 180g 2XLP set, with TWO bonus tracks from the same session that were not featured on the original vinyl release. This album is limited to 500 copies worldwide and comes with an obi strip + liner notes by American jazz critic & author Kevin Whitehead. Pharoah `Farrell' Sanders (born 1940) is a leading figure in the world of jazz and one of the last living legends with connections to players like Sun Ra and John Coltrane. His tenor saxophone playing has earned him royal status amongst free jazz players, critics and collectors. On "Africa" from 1987 Sanders plays with an all-star line-up consisting of Idris Muhammad, John Hicks and Curtis Lundy. Muhammad brings his trademark tight sense of timekeeping, but with a looseness that we love - and Lundy's warm soulful bass does more than enough to give the set a sound bottom- all this while Hick's free lyrical piano works nicely with Sander's spiritual horn. The brilliant `Africa sessions' features the quartet at their best...soulful but also searching for a strong groove at the same time. The music here is less ornamented than on most of Sanders' studio recordings, where sextets, septets or larger lineups have been the norm, but this brilliant effort here remains every bit as compelling. Pharoah and his crew play with the utmost sensitivity and give a demonstration that shows us the full extent of their skills.- Format

SANTORO, ANGELO NOCE
For you
[engl] First ever LP/CD reissue of this private Dutch album from 1979: a latin- funk- psych- prog trip featuring groovy jazzy flute, superb acoustic / electric guitars, funky rhythm section, exotic percussion and some cool Oriental / Thai / Brazilian vibes. Angelo Noce Santoro is a guitar player with over forty- five years of musical career. A founding member of legendary psych- prog band Cosmic Dealer, Angelo has recorded and released albums under his own name and hes also behind projects like Palmeira (the first Dutch band playing Brazilian music), Santoro Brothers and Oriental Guitars among many others. His unique guitar playing, which incorporates surf, psychedelic, jazz and Oriental influences, has received praising from connoisseurs of obscure instrumental sounds such as Jello Biafra, who got in touch with Angelo after discovering one of his solo albums in a second- hand shop in the 80s. For You? was Angelos first solo effort, released as a private pressing in 1979 on ANS, his own label. Angelo played bass, acoustic & electric guitars, flute and percussion. He was joined by ace flute player Steven Bishop, drummer Herman Muller and Lodewijk Hulsman on acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks were written by Angelo prior to 1979, with some of them dating back to the early 70s when he was with Cosmic Dealer.- Format

Wiggle That Thing
[engl] The late Nathaniel ?Snoopy? Dean is one of those many underrated southern soul and blues men who never reached great fame outside their home ground. His legacy is deeply treasured though by hardcore black music followers. In the late sixties he instigated the now very sought after group Third Guitar who recorded some great sides for the Rojac label out of NYC. He subsequently became a member of the Deep City Band and started recording under his own name. In the early to mid seventies Dean made five singles and an album Wiggle That Thing on Henry Stone's Blue Candle imprint which is being reissued here. The album - originally released in 1977 - contains a rare combination of deep, southern soul, funk and blues in such a way that the LP really does not fall straight in neither category. In the 80?s Snoopy Dean became a much in demand session musician as a guitarist in Miami and recorded at least two more albums that belong more in the blues and indie soul field. Unfortunately Snoopy Dean died in 1998 due to complications arising from diabetes. Still, it is this great LP Wiggle That Thing he will be always and best remembered for.- Format

Jazz Samba Encore!
[engl] While in 1963 Beat and Rock'n'Roll ruled the charts and airwaves at full throttle, there still was a scene for more gentle and lightweight music out there to get you into a joyful mood right when you put the vinyl onto your turntable. Swinging jazz and latin dance music of the popular kind combined as a force of light if you want to say so. And grand master Stan Getz, a very prolific and renowned saxophone player since the late 1940s joined in with Luiz Bonfá for a record. The latter one was a legend in Brazil as a jazz guitarist and composer. And both as a musical unit produced one of the greatest ever paths crossing record in the field of merely acoustic latin pop. A few well placed vocal lines flanked by Mr. Getz' utterly sensual saxophone playing and restrained yet very intense guitar lines on a groundwork of poly rhythmical grooves make you want to get up and dance. The majority of the tunes on this album is all instrumental and both leaders of the project shine here as the brightest stars of the scene. If you close your eyes you will find yourself in some open and sun flushed Brazilian venue where waiters with white jackets serve drinks and a well dressed ladies with a certain mysterious charisma try to catch your eye while you zip on your bourbon and let your mind float away to the slightly melancholic but still vital melodies. A gentle record for gentle hours and a legend on it's own. Still as fresh and exciting as it has been in 1963 and highly sought after by fans of jazzy latin sounds from those days. You wait for Astrud Gilberto to set in each second and sing about the girl of Epanema, no joke. Sound and performance are as expected. Clear and always beneficial to the song itself but adorned with the most passionate solos you could find on such a record. Sheer joy pressed on vinyl!- Format
