    PARADISE SQUARE

Never thought I'd see the day

[engl] Singer/songwriter Pete Ryder was a key player on two of the most rare and sought- after private folk albums from the UK: Paradise Square and Cair Paravel. Paradise Square was his first project, a group formed at Sheffield University's Christian Union in the early 70s. In 1974, the band released their only album as a private pressing of 100 copies (five stars in the Pokora book). Fragile, homemade lo- fi psychedelic folk with acoustic guitars, violin, delicate male- female vocals, Xian overtones and hints of Incredible String Band or Dando Shaft. Remastered sound, repro of the original insert plus liner notes by Richard Allen (Shindig!).

    QUICK, BILL

    Maravillosa gente

[engl] Mysterious Bill Quick?.this guy was son of North- American dad and Venezuelan mum, and landed in Madrid in the early 70s, spending most of his time playing music and manufacturing leather belts and other stuff that he later sold at the popular Rastro flea market in Madrid, meeting point for all hippies of the time. He somehow got in touch with famous producer Alain Milhaud, who got really impressed by his work and quickly offered him a deal for recording a long- play to be released in Milhauds own Explosion label. Then Bill recruited some of top studio musicians and foreign friends who were also living in Madrid at the time; the list of people who play on the recordings is impressive: Salvador Dominguez & Chema Pellicó (ex- Cerebrum), Rafa Gálvez (later on Vainica Dobles backing band), Frank Rojas (Sangre), Jess Lam (Jess & James)?and up to eleven musicians joined Bill in the recording studio. As a result, ?Maravillosa gente? (Beautiful people) was recorded. Ranging from beautiful, introspective, acoustic solo tracks like ?Beautiful People?, ?Only the weather? or the acid- folk of ?Winters gonna come? to full backing- band hard- edged ones like ?Take me away?, ?Somebody? and the folk- rock sounding of ?With you, Lord? or ?I sing this song?, the album is a real treat from start to finish. It has an awesome sound and amazing production (it was recorded at one of the most advanced Spanish recording studios at the time), along with top musicianship and Bills amazing songwriting. A real big ticket that was absolutely ignored in Spain at the time, and even today remains unknown to most of folk- rock collectors and fans. Curious enough, the album got released in Brazil as well (with poor sales again), with a different cover artwork. Now this is reissued for the first time, including a booklet with pictures and detailed liner notes telling the wonderful and strange story of this mysterious musician and carefully remastered sound. Outer carton slimcase.

    SLOVENSKA GRUDA

    Pesmi

[engl] Originally released in 1983 in former Yugoslavia this album is a truly undiscovered gem of ethereal folk music. Pesmi combines the old traditional melodies of Eastern Europe and the Balkan States area with the lush and enchanting instrumentation of the late 60s and early 70s folk with elements of progressive folk and singer/songwriter from England and the USA. This results in a highly mystifying and still easily folksy piece of exclusively acoustically instrumented music with haunting female vocals that seduce you with lyrics in their native tongue. “Pesmi” reminds of well known artists like PENTANGLE, STEELEYE SPAN, GRYPHON, FAIRPORT CONVENTION and even SIMON & GARFUNKEL , just with this very unique eastern flavor and bigger emotional gestures in the melodies. An utterly picturesque musical experience similar to a diving trip through an ancient sunken city in the wild ocean eons ago.

    SOURDELINE

    Jeanne d'Aymé

[engl] Formed in 1972 in Northern France, Sourdeline has remained as a hidden treasure for decades. With a strong Pentangle influence in their works, the guys released a couple of astounding albums during the next few years, acquiring a wonderful baroque folk sound based in some traditional French folk songs and many originals, with the use of a large number of traditional instruments. Their second and last album ''Jeanne d'Aymé'' is from 1977 and, though being the lesser known of them both, is for us at Guerssen their definitive work, a truly major discovery waiting for you who are not yet in the know.

    SUBWAY

    Subway

[engl] Subway was a duo, consisting of an American and an UK- guy, who released their only album in France as 200 vinyls in 1972. There they lived and played both for some time as street musicians, who played their compositons even at Parisien subway, hence the bandname. Unfortunately the album fell through, so the unsold vinyls were melted, as usual in France at this time. The band presented a phantastic psych- folk music with prog- rock- elements. An absolutely top- album, which hopefully now will reach a bigger audience, as the original LP is very rare.

    TIM EVANS

    Wretched Wings

[engl] Tim Evans is a singer songwriter from Tasmania Australia, currently living in Brooklyn New York. Melding traditional finger picking with often dark lyrical content, his carefully crafted songs have brought comparisons such as Townes Van Zandt, John Fahey and Syd Barrett. Realizing his debut solo album this year, Evans has quickly built a reputation as an enigmatic and powerful live performer. With a second album already recorded and scheduled for release in spring 2017, we can expect great things from this emerging solo artist Over the course of two decades, Tim Evans’ music has taken a long, winding path across the Earth. Stylistically, Evans has mastered fetid swamp-punk, full-tilt psychedelic boogie, no wave lurch and corrosive noise rock. Under the Degreaser moniker, Evans and cohorts throw these elements into a supercollider and what results is a muscular beast with unpredictable intentions. But here, on Wretched Wings, Evans steps out of his own shadow with the first release under his own name. A true solo album, Wretched Wings finds Tim Evans stretching his songwriting by scaling back sonically. Although Evans is an excellent drummer, his solo album features almost no percussion; relying instead on his expressive and singular guitar-playing. Evans practically caresses his acoustic as he coaxes spine-tingling webs of sound from its humble body. The gentle cascade of thrummed notes conjures a paradoxical feeling of intimacy within a vast space. Imagine being out amongst the deep brush, but with the hot breath of an old flame whispering in your ear. Songs like “Rotted Spring” and “You Was Mine” are perfect specimens of Evans’ peculiar brand of haunted outback blues. At times, they recall the understated drama of Leonard Cohen, or even of the God-fearing murder ballads sung by generations of American hill-folk for decades. Some songs are rendered lush by virtue of expertly-placed reverb and layered guitar overdubs. And while Evans is in fine voice here, singing at his most relaxed and gentle, there is the suggestion of a hollowed-out soul, as if Nico’s The Marble Index was a blueprint. The clouds do part, however; the sun pokes through the cracks in the wall. Despite its title, “Dark Fire” has an optimistic bent to it, although the lyrics hint at something terrible in the past. With its electric guitar shimmer, “Long Long Time” is both the densest and poppiest song on Wretched Wings, even as Evans pleads for you to “feed [him] to the wolves.” “Unwanted” follows and it is as down as a poor boy blues can get. Even God turns his back on this miserable bastard. After surviving “Piece Of Death” and “Spring’s Slaughter” (this is indeed a Fall/Winter record), you are rewarded with the uplifting strains of “Mornin’ Train.” That trace of melancholy is always there, but the future doesn’t seem quite so bleak from this vantage.

    TREE PEOPLE

    Human voices

[engl] Watch out for this rarity. You know the Tree People, late 70s predecessors of the ongoing new folk movement in the USA. You know their 1979 debut album and you know it's a masterpiece?.. but oh well, did you know about their second album??? Surely not, especially because it was a cassette only release at the time with a very short print. Luckily enough, the Tree People guys kept the mastertapes of these recordings and we're proud to be making this wonderful music available now. Vinyl version will come later, here's the CD with splendid sound quality. The music here is equally as good, if not better, than the self- titled debut and a real must for any folk and psych- folk lover. Acoustic guitars, subtile percussions, wonderful flute work and some warm vocals, but overall a real big dose of quality and originality that makes the Tree People music be absolutely ahead of its time and therefore so much admired today. A real beauty! The CD comes with a booklet including liners by the band's leader Stephen Cohen, as well as some pictures.

    The Tree People

[engl] Same titled album by Oregon group Tree People has finally reached its deserved status after the excellent CD reissue released by Japanese label Tiliqua a couple years ago. ''Tree People'' is no other than a fantastic piece of hippie acid folk that clearly anticipates today's ''Freak Folk'' movement. Very clean production, with an Eastern flavour noticeable in many passages and using acoustic guitars, varied percussions and flutes, while the strong vocals of Stephen Cohen finalize the picture. Cagibi

[engl] Mega- rare private pressing from France, 1975, with only 300 copies made. Pretty unknown album, and a killer!!! Nothing you would expect from a French record, really?.this is 100% USA early 70's sounding stuff, West Coast folk- rock with a psychedelic edge, CSNY feel, acoustic & electric guitars, some fierce fuzz assaults, English vocals? an incredible discovery! The original pressing came with plain white cover, and a few copies were later pasted- on with a few very low quality photos. For this reissue, we have used that paste- on collage, and added some more stuff in the back- cover with photos from Serge's archive. Fully remastered sound, linernotes and limited to 500 copies.
