    POWER BURKAS

    Llarga vida al taranna

[engl] So, suddenly a new young band appears and everything we thought was solid and unmovable becomes a big pile of rubble. It’s that capacity to learn all the lessons, tear them apart and create something completely new, that only todays youth have. Theirs is the spark; theirs is the rage and force. Punk is theirs. With ‘Llarga vida al taranna?’, their first studio album, the very young Power Burkas instantly become the band we are talking about. Born in 2013, they released an EP, a demo and a cassette in less than two years; they will now publish their first LP, fifteen tracks that will leave many speechless. Prodigal sons of Vic, Power Burkas have no problem with drinking from many a fountain as long as they quench their thirst, from Fugazi to The Velvet Underground, from Minutemen to The Beatles, from Sonics to Jawbox and even vindicating the local bands they grew up with, Els Surfing SIrles, Tro?pical Ice Land or FP. That is how they achieve a mix of garage, 80’s punk, power pop and post-hardcore and turn it into a new complex free and perfectly solid sound. No cut and paste, no imposture. The album starts with urgency in “Potser”, making it clear there will be no half- heartlessness, and is followed by a high level hymn called “Ja ens entenem’. With just two songs, they prove the album will be anything but predictable. The unex- pected changes in rhythm flow naturally and you continually feel that the restrained nerve will explode into a melodic supernova at any moment. Just that happens in “Ferralla”, where a hysteric chorus with loud vocals and visions of raised fists breaks loose. Everything here is power and celebration (like the song that gives the album its name), or tension and dynamite (the speedy “20”). Power Burkas have an amazing capacity for knitting vocal melodies that are quite unusu- al in a guitar rock band (check out the beautiful “El pop I la gallega”, the dance- able “La mission de l’home e?s ser Patro?” or the exciting “Aiguarra?s”. “Llarga vida al taranna?” was recorded and mixed on low heat by Joan Peiron, gui- tarist and producer of FP. Together, he has managed to boost the bands naked yet immersive sound, their ready guitars, their tremendously creative rhythmic sec- tion, their memorable bass lines and vocals, that lay comfortably among both the intimate parts and the mad ‘shouted’ ones. “Llarga vida al taranna?” is no promise. It’s proof. Power Burkas will exceed all expectations.

    RIPPERS

    Fire tractaät

[engl] Very few bands can say they’ve been together for seventeen years and still manage to find the way of making every album and every concert leave you with an even better taste in the mouth than the previous ones. This is a privilege reserved for those bands that have built their own sound and created their own context. Rippers are one of these bands. After five albums and a variety of 7” (including a spilt with Turbonegro) the band formed by the Teichenné brothers publish Fire Träctat, their first album by BCore, where they pick up the quintessence of their dark and furious punkrock. Three winters have gone by since they stunned us with Seeds of the New Dawn, an album produced by themselves after two albums recorded with Santi García, and with which they managed to go to an even higher level of energy then what we are used to, perfecting it with a rare elegance. With Fire Träctat they have taken yet another small step towards that secret place only they know. Not even the recent change of drummer (Marc Morell has taken the place of Francesc Marchan) has managed to keep them away from the noisy path so full of pain that they have gone down these last two decades. In Fire Träctat the guitars flow from serenity to anger while Marcs vocals are at the edge of the abyss showing no fear to be looked back at. Their sixth LP, where the Rippers liberate themselves from all external elements, they shut themselves in their studio at Arboç, and descend down to the seed of their own music, dodging the madness by just a few inches. That’s how they manage to gather, in their ten songs, all of their primitive rage, their raw sound, of an essential beauty that shouts out, a true drop down to hell where even the guitars confess their sins. The artwork of the album has been taken from a piece by Willliam Blake, the British poet and painter from the beginnings of the XIX century, who with he’s visions of hell reached deep places close to those that Rippers visit in Fire Tractaät.

    STARMARKET

    Four Hours Light

    TOKYO SEX DESTRUCTION

    The neighbourhood

Durchweg tanzbar, schwitzend, furios!

    VISTALEGRE

    Vistalegre

[engl] It's no secret lots of us were expecting some news from these Sant Feliu de Guixols guys, after No More Lies broke up some time ago. We couldn't believe such a talented band wouldn't have a second life. Definitely, it was worth the wait, Vistalegre is here to stay. They worked hard and fast, writing an astonishing adictive record, straight in your face punk-rock with a bit of rhythm complexity. Lovers of Kepone, Nada Surf, Replacements or early Posies, will go crazy with this stuff.

    WILD ANIMALS

    Basements: Music to fight hypocrisy

[engl] When Built to Spill speak of those ‘broken chairs’ that your body gets used to, from which we adopt a critical posture where everything bad in the world is everyone else’s fault, the music sector always points towards the venues, bookers, labels, formats, media platforms, bands or even the publics free will; Wild Animals cut the crap and answer with action. It’s almost as if they say: “You’re the problem”. Its impossible to not fall for both their ethics and their ‘image’ –understood due to the array of music references involved-. Both born from ’90 indie culture, hardcore com- bustion and a dominant and vital need to perform, spread the word, expand the sound and keep this action network, so consciously woven underground, where the city sewages sanitise culture, alive. Just a year after First Songs EP, Wild Animals wield their debut under the title Basements: Music to fight hypocrisy. The album nods towards Warehouse: Songs and stories (1986) by Hu?sker Du? and is based on “what basements mean to us, basements, squats, houses or self-managed venues with DIY spirit, where people talk with honesty and do everything with passion.” It’s when going to any of these associations when the idea that once seemed utopic on paper, suddenly becomes an accurate picture of reality. To declare their love for basements is to dedicate their work to musical freedom, to alienate their values from the markets hypocrisy. Those that know Fon, Paula and Jamie, know that this statement is not only found in their lyrics, but also in their attitude. They manage the labels We Are The Daughters and La Agoni?a de Vivir and have been members of bands like Enoch Ardon, Allfits, Notes to myself and Jamie 4 President, to just mention a few. They are so committed that you can’t help ask yourself “What would have happened if you hadn’t started playing an instrument or listening to music? Jamie used to play football but gave it up. We used to have a good laugh imagining him as multimil- lionaire Madrid player.” Whatever the story, we would have also missed out on this new punk rock and power pop journey, chiselled by Santi and Vi?ctor Garci?a at Estudios Ultramarinos (giving the bands already perfect songs, a sound full of detail). This is an album where you’ll find the origins of a passion (“Heavy Metal Saved My Life”), a change of scenery “Wave Goodbye Coastline”, a moving radiography of a love story (“Logic Makes No Sense”), socio political views in “Guilty” and “The Empire Strikes Back” or the TV series crossword “Television Blows”. There’s also an emotional anecdote of three people torn wide open. Maybe when they were singing, “tomorrow's friends, tonight we're only strangers” in “Avocado” –referring to their European tours-, they already knew that the listeners’ answer to this album would be: a total crush on their music and life.
