    31 FLAVORS, THE

    Hair

[engl] In the late 60s, a bunch of mysterious psychedelic exploitation albums were released by the budget Crown label in the US. Issued under different band names (The Firebirds, Underground Electrics, 31 Flavors?) , they were recorded by an anonymous group of studio musicians. ?Hair? by 31 Flavors is the counterpart to ?Light My Fire? by The Firebirds. Along with demented raw garage covers of ?Hair? and ?Aquarius?, it contains some of the heaviest, fuzzed out exploitation sounds ever committed to vinyl. You can hear echoes of Blue Cheer, Hendrix and Sabbath, featuring proto- doom, heavy- psych bombs like ?Distortions of darkness One of the best of the psych- ploitation LPs, with more fuzzzz than a dozen 1971 private press hardrockers. Great raw live feel, wild playing and excellent fuzz riffs? Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives)

    After All

[engl] Hailing from Florida, After All was formed by well- experienced musicians with an R&B, jazz and blues background who hooked up with poetry writer Linda Hargrove to record an ambitious album influenced by acid- rock and psychedelic, early progressive sounds. Originally released in 1969 on the Athena label, the album is now considered an obscure classic. Top level psych/prog dominated by Hammond organ / guitar plus explosive drumming. Heres a welcome new reissue in original artwork plus remastered sound, insert with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl. ''Overlooked but pretty good moody late 1960s organ & guitar psych- rock with a Doors influence. The album is dominated by an unusual creeping menace a la Freeborne...'' BACHS, THE

    Out of the Bachs

[engl] 60s garage- psych moody monster! ''Out Of The Bachs'' was released in 1968 as a private pressing of 150 copies and it's one of the rarest USA 60s garage / teenbeat albums ever. The band consisted of five young kids from Chicago, regulars at local teen dances, who decided to release an album as a testimony for their fans before splitting up. Recorded and mixed in just 10 hours at a makeshift studio, ''Out Of The Bachs'' offered 12 amazing self- penned songs with a sound ahead of its time. Pure teenage- angst vocals, crashing Rickenbackers, fuzz outbursts, killer moody tracks. Sadly, all previous reissues of the album failed to capture the true sound of the original, until the Time Lag label reissued it in 2011, remastered from a pristine original vinyl copy. Out of print for many years, we present a new vinyl reissue using the same audio master as the Time Lag edition. BITTER SEEDS / ROCK SHOP

    State of your mind

[engl] The Bitter Seeds were one of the pioneering bands from the early Monterey music scene. Leaded by flashing guitar player Leonard ''Pooch'' Paschini, they were active from 1966 to 1970, gigging regularly at such legendary venues as Bull's Eye Tavern, Longshoreman's Hall, Matrix, Fillmore, etc, sharing stage with famous bands like Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly or Steppenwolf. In 1967, The Bitter Seeds recorded their only 45, issued under The Rock Shop name, as they wanted to avoid confusion with The Seeds. ''State of your mind'' b/w ''Is that your halo'' was released on the Rowena label and it's a brutal garage- psych double sider. The following year the group recorded four studio tracks which have remained unreleased until now. These are perfect examples of the transition from R&B- garage to early psychedelic sounds which many San Francisco ballroom bands experienced at the time. An exciting find for any lover of lost West Coast psychedelic sounds. For this Bitter Seeds / Rock Shop retrospective, we've also unearthed some wild live recordings from 1966 with good sound quality. And amazing document which had been buried until now.

    BLISS

    Bliss

[engl] Psychedelic hard-rock / heavy blues with loud fuzz-wah guitar and powerful drumming by this power-trio from Arizona, originally released in 1969. Bliss was born from the ashes of garage band The Sect. Legendary radio DJ and producer Hadley “Who Loves You Madley” (the first black disc jockey from Arizona) took them under his wing and produced some recordings. By the end of 1968, the five members of The Sect graduated and decided to break up. Soon, they reformed as a trio with Martin (bass), Reed (guitar) and Aldred (drums). Reed came up with a new name, BLISS, which not only reflected his spiritual interest but it was also more in vein with the new psychedelic sounds of artists like Cream, Blue Cheer or Hendrix. Under Murrell’s guidance, the trio recorded a full album, released on L.A.-based Canyon Records in 1969. Canyon, home to artists like Doris Duke or Swamp Dogg, was a label more focused on R&B, soul and funk than psychedelia so, not surprisingly, the album slipped through the cracks. It wasn’t until a couple of decades later that Bliss was re-discovered by psych collectors, who were attracted to the album’s heavy & bluesy psychedelic sound, highlighted by Reed's hard fuzz-wah guitar and Aldred's powerful drumming. The album offers a mix of great self-penned tracks (including two by Murrell) such as “Visions”, “Ride The Ship Of Fools” and “Cry Of Love” – which bears a striking resemblance to The Zombies “Time Of The Season”! – plus a few covers (Joe Tex, B.B. King, Johnny Guitar Watson…) The origins of Jason Crest are in beat band The Good Thing Brigade. Originally from Kent, they made quite a stir in the London club circuit, supporting established groups like The Who and The Moody Blues. No wonder they caught the eye of en vogue producer Fritz Fryer (Open Mind, etc) who got them a contract with Philips, changing their name to Jason Crest after one of their songs, "’The Collected Works of Justin Crest". Between 1968 and 1969, the band released five singles and left behind a bunch of unissued demo recordings / acetates. Jason Crest’s music run the gamut from brilliant psych–pop full of wah–wah organ to Mellotron / phasing fuelled introspective numbers and even heavy acid–psych / proto–metal on the freaky "Black Mass". Sadly, due to lack of success and problems with the label and between the band members, the band split after releasing their last 45 in 1969. Vocalist Terry Clark joined hard–rock band Orang–Utan, whilst the remaining members formed High Broom (featuring ex–Mike Stuart Span / Leviathan guitarist Brian Bennett). In 1971, Clark, along with fellow Jason Crest members Derek Smallcombe and Roger Siggery, formed Holy Mackerel.

This rare album is a good example of US acid–rock / hippie psych with slight soul & funk influences: fantastic playing, swirling organ, powerful vocals, top guitar shredding, flute... "Stavia" has always been one of those shrouded in mystery albums, so rare that some collectors even doubted about its existence. BUZZSAW

From Lemon Drops To Acid Rock

[engl] From the ashes of 60s garage band The Lemon Drops comes power trio Buzzsaw with their loud heavy- psych sound. In the late 60s, The Lemon Drops, one of the finest garage- psych bands from Chicago (of ''I Live in the Springtime'' fame), relocated to the West Coast, where they gigged around and tried to secure a record contract. After a three- day ''strawberry acid party'' at manager Dan Herron's mansion, the original band disintegrated. And that's when power trio Buzzsaw was born, featuring Eddie and Gary Weiss (both Ex- Lemon Drops) on guitar / drums respectively and Rick Fertel on bass. Buzzsaw was the perfect vehicle for Eddie Weiss (whose use of fuzz & distortion was the trademark sound of The Lemon Drops) to push his guitar and effect pedals to the limit. The trio used to visit ''Starhill'', Neil Young's old sawmill in La Honda, where they rehearsed & wrote songs. The photo used for the front cover on this album was taken there. In 1971, Max Weiss (Creedence Clearwater Revival's manager) expressed interest in the band, so Buzzsaw entered Ampex Studios in San Francisco (the place where CCR had recorded ''Suzie Q'') to lay down some tracks. They also recorded some material at Pacific Sound Studios. All of these recordings were produced by Roger Weiss, the original producer of The Lemon Drops and co- owner of Rembrandt Records. Sadly, Buzzsaw only released one 45 during their short lifespan. And it was a frustrating release, as it included a recording from the Lemon Drops era on the A- Side backed with a new song which didn't reflect the real sound of the band on the B- Side. That 45 went nowhere, Buzzsaw split and the recordings they did at Ampex and Pacific Studios remained unreleased until 1995, when some of them were included on ''From Lemon Drops To Acid Rock'', a Buzzsaw CD compilation by Cicadelic Records. Our Buzzsaw double vinyl retrospective includes all the tracks from the previous ''From Lemon Drops To Acid Rock'' CD plus some amazing recently discovered acetates and unreleased master tapes. The music is orgasmic '71 heavy- psych / proto- grunge in the style of Hendrix and Blue Cheer with killer fuzz- wah guitar and melodic vocals. Eddie's guitar sound is just insane?despite the vintage '71 date, some of his playing would not be out of place on a High Rise or Ty Segall album. Fully licensed. Remastered sound from the original tapes and acetates.

    CAL

    Homegrown

[engl] Totally under the radar US private pressing from 1982. 60s/70s influenced psychedelic hard–rock full of distorted guitar and freaky synths with some mellowed–out folky moments. File next to other psych misfits such like T Kail, D.R. Hooker, Marcus, Michael Angelo? Cal – also known as "Cal Rock&Roll" – was a band formed in the mid–70s in New York by some veteran musicians from the club scene: Larry Calabrese on guitar & vocals, Andy Barone on bass, Jerry Joly on drums / vocals and Jeffrey Gaer on keyboards. Famous for their powerful live shows ? one of their stellar moments was opening for Leslie West & Mountain – , Cal secured a faithful fan base, especially among the biker crowd. In 1980, they recorded their only album: "Homegrown". As the title suggests, it was self–produced by the band and recorded by Larry at his 8–track home studio. But unlike other similar private albums, there’s nothing amateur here. This is a perfectly recorded & played effort, featuring well crafted songs. There’s lot of loud distorted guitar, Hammond, analogue synths and some Doors influence on the vocals, especially on the lysergic "Couragous Cat". "Homegrown" was released in 1982 in a edition of 2000 copies, most of which were discarded due to pressing faults. Also, the album mastered at lower speed. Soon after, Larry met Todd Rundgren at a recording studio and he expressed interest in the band and some of their songs. Famous record label Sugarhill were also interested in adding Cal to their roster but nothing came of it in the end. So "Homegrown" vanished into obscurity until some original copies were discovered by psych dealers and collectors in the 90s. First ever legit reissue Insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos

    CASSELL, MATHEW LARKIN

    Matt The Cat

[engl] Originally from San Francisco, Matthew Larkin Cassell is a talented songwriter, vocalist and multi–instrumentalist. During the ’70s–80s, Cassell fronted a trio in the Bay Area, opening for major acts like The Tubes and Sylvester. Playing an unique fusion of funk, R&B, jazz and soft–rock, he recorded his first LP, "Pieces" in 1977, followed by a 12" titled "Matt The Cat" in 1978. Both were privately pressed and modestly distributed at the time. Fast forward to the early ’00s: Cassell’s albums are discovered by beat diggers & hip–hop producers, which led to some of his songs being sampled and included on mixes by people like Kon & Amir, Madlib and M.F. Doom. Famous labels such as Stones Throw and P–Vine reissue his music at the same time that his original albums reach outrageous prices in the collector’s market. Here’s an overdue reissue of Cassell’s second effort, "Matt The Cat", originally released in 1978. A great fusion of FUNK, R&B, SOUL–JAZZ and 70s SSW / AOR, featuring "All I’m Missing Is You", sampled by People Under The Stairs. Includes two bonus tracks from his rare "Love To Love" / "When I Go Down" 45 from 1980.

Here’s a compilation (1967–68) featuring a selection of their 45 sides for Toucan and Cobblestone (including the mod–psych classics "Uncle Kirby" and "Shaka Shaka Na Na") plus some amazing studio tracks which were never released at the time. Fab Beatlesque / Anglophile psych with great vocal harmonies, jangly and fuzzy guitars, organ... Formed in Galveston in the mid–60s, the Countdown 5 were one of the leading psychedelic / garage bands from Texas. From sharing stage with legendary Houston groups like Moving Sidewalks, the Clique and 13th Floor Elevators and opening for big names like Paul Revere & The Raiders, they went to running their own label (Toucan) and were also part owners of the renowned Walter Andrus Studio, home to bands like the Elevators and Fever Tree. "Uncle Kirby" is focused on the psychedelic period of the band (1967–68), including their most psych sounding 45 sides (in original mono mixes) plus unreleased tracks recorded at Andrus Studios which had never been released on vinyl until now.

    CRYSTALAUGUR

    Terranaut

[engl] Ultimate underground, lo–fi, psychedelic private press album recorded in Singapore by four US teens in 1975. Loose feel, raw sound, spacey prog /funk touches, sound effects and some proto–DIY, pre–punk vibes which bring to mind Velvet Underground or avant–garage 70s Cleveland bands like Pere Ubu but also hard–rockers ala Pink Fairies or Stray?. Crystalaugur was formed by four young ex–pats attending school in Singapore in the early 70s: Howard Kukla, Kim Bengs, Bryan Hall and Guy Rittger. For most of them this was their first serious musical experience. "Terranaut" was recorded on a 4–track machine and subsequently released by the band in a private edition of 200 copies on their own Warped Records imprint. Bootlegged many times over the years, we present the first ever legit reissue of this "lost–in–time" psychedelic artefact.

    CYKLE

    Cykle

[engl] Cykle was formed in 1968, North Carolina, when gifted musician and songwriter Jimmy Sossamon (previously in famous local band The Young Ones) heard a local group, the Glory Cykle. He was so impressed that he approached them about becoming their manager. The band -- guitarists Ralph Stevens and Jeff Hardin, bassist Grady Pope, organist Rick Wilson, and drummer/vocalist Ken Allen -- practiced at the studio Sossamon had built in his parent's garage, and by the end of the year, Sossamon took up the drummer’s seat to free up Allen as lead vocalist. Band’s name was shortened to Cykle and in early 1969 they began recording an album consisting entirely of Sossamon originals. The resultant eponymous LP was released later that year as a private pressing of 500 copies on the band’s own Label Records. But despite the 1969 release date, “Cykle” sounds straight from the 1966-67 garage-punk-psychedelic book.

    Hard heartsingin'

[engl] Reissue from the original masters of the one and only album by this great Pacific Northwest band. Recorded in 1970, it's a mix of hard- driving psychedelic rock, heavy- blues and atmospheric ballads with big studio production. Flowing organs, powerful Doorsy vocals and hard- edged guitars. Nice orchestrations on some tracks which bring to mind Love's ''Forever Changes'' or Johnny Rivers ''Realization''.

    DREAMIES

    Auralgraphic Entertainment

[engl] Dreamies? is ranked #37 on Mojo Magazine's 2005 list of the 'Top 50 Most Out- There Albums of All Time' (a list that includes the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground, and Miles Davis). This unique album by Bill Holt, first released in 1974, sounded way ahead of their time and became an international cult classic in the following decades. A perfect example of what it was called ?Head Music? at the time, Dreamies consists of two large suits full of Lennon- esque vocals, sound collages, early electronics and proto- sampling. The perfect marriage between psychedelia, pop and experimental sounds. Remastered sound, original artwork, repro of the rare original insert.

Papa never let me sing the blues (180g)

[engl] Superb North- American album, this was released as a private pressing in 1972 and has an extremely good production for being a private. Theres a bit of everything on it, from blues- rock with the opening track ?Cold night in August?, to acoustic gems in a folkier mood, some psychedelic jams, honky- tonk?all very well executed and with remarkable guitar work. A solid album, very worthy of reissue? (The Acid Archives).· Fully licensed, first ever vinyl reissue.
