    KARACA, CEM

    Apaslar, Kardaslar, Mogollar

[engl] Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbuls music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poets broiling righteousness and also his listeners? common ground with their elders in Turkeys history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karacas own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then- current project Dervisan. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kellys flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric baglama, and youre ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem.

Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history. 1975's 'Nem Kaldi' gathers more 60s- 70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. KIZILOK, FIKRET

    Anadolu'yum

[engl] What if Bob Dylan was also a dentist, and then he hired Keith Emerson to play keyboards on songs he wrote for a play? It happened in Istanbul, friends. Turkish folk singer Fikret Kizilok started out balancing his interest in the toothy arts with playing rhythm guitar in a Beatles knock- off band. He quickly gave both up for more serious acoustic songwriting, unveiling aged melodies and florid picking that evoked the long history of the hilly Turkish countryside. In the early 70s, while trying to recover from a period of mourning, Kizilok also hired an electric & very splashy backing band, and started throwing in prog flute and ritzy Doorsish organ rips. This collection of singles from 1971- 75 lets you taste each of Kiziloks and Anatolias many moods.

    Arap Saçi

[engl] Master of the fuzz saz, Turkeys answer to Eric Clapton brings burly axe attacks to the snakey folk melodies of Anatolia. Long proven to cause just the brain- rot you?re looking for, heres a Koray collection of tracks taken from singles and LPs for your acid- drenched pleasure. The guitar slinger who was once stabbed for wearing his hair too long around the streets of Istanbul interweaves melodies as old as the ruins of Ephesus with the riffs of Black Sabbath & his own souped- up baglama. Find out why they call him Erkin Baba.

    Elektronik Türküler

[engl] Technically his 2nd lp after a collection of singles, this benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbuls musicians & pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim & Baris Mancos Kurtalan Ekspres) & an electrified baglama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double- reed melodies, bulging riffs, & hammer- ons that go on for- friggin- ever. Savagery begins at home people, so make sure you get a physical copy of the best record by the Turkish Hendrix into your house. Gatefold cover, 180g vinyl, insert with linernotes.

    MANÇO, BARIS

    Nick The Chopper

[engl] Second proper studio album – originally released in 1976 – by the king of Turkish psych/Anatolian rock. Recorded in Belgium with help from session musicians related to Placebo, Janko Nilovic and Mad Unity among others, Nick The Chopper features lyrics in English, huge orchestral sections, and re–arrangements of many of the melodies from his masterpiece 2023. Baris spent his whole life trying to communicate to the wider world outside Turkey. This was his last attempt at doing so with an album before turning to a travel television show to visit faraway places and talk to the young and old, one on one. Every production trick of the glorious 1970s was deployed to push Baris up the European charts, and now they can push him right into your brain instead.

[engl] Makam madness gives way to instrumental prog on this burned–out last album, released in 1976, by Turkey’s Anadolu Pop heroes. Mogollar was the band that never had a singer attached for long, and yet even more than Baris or Erkin, they consciously highlighted what was different about the new sounds of the era. Incredible fusion of ancient Anatolian melodies and instruments with prog/psych with ocassional piercing fuzz guitar. [engl] The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their Gipsy–Rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy–rock duos. Morena y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed Rumba, Flamenco, Psychedelic Rock, Funk and Disco Music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz–wah–phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo. [engl] First ever vinyl reissue of this prog/psych masterpiece by cult Arabian band Osiris, their first album originally released in 1982. A killer blend of 70s sounding hard progressive / psychedelic sounds with long ripping Mini- Moog & analog synth attacks smashed into mellow vibes & Arabian folky touches, hard lead guitar, exotic percussion, floating rhythm section, English vocalsFormed in the tiny Bahrain (Persian Gulf) in the late 70s, the Osiris story goes back to 1969, when talented brothers Mohamed and Nabil Alsadeqi formed a funk / rock band named Witch. The band broke up when Mohamed left to pursue his studies in Texas, while his brother Nabil left for London. Upon returning to Bahrain in 1 the two brothers decided to form the first progressive rock from Bahrain. It was not easy to find similar minded musicians in their town but they succeeded with help from Mohammed Shafii (bass), Sami Al- Jamea (keyboards), Mohamed Amin Kooheji (guitar, bass, vocals) and Abdul Razzak Aryan (second keyboards). Mohamed and Nabil began working out an original repertoire which would fuse musical complexity, melodic richness and Arab culture. They chose the name OSIRIS from Egyptian mythology not only for its sound but also for its references to Arab culture, youth and fertility. But the definitive Osiris line- up came up when they added a charismatic singer named Isa Janahi. Osiris made their live debut at the end of 1981. Isa wore flashing coloured clothes and capes and captivated the audience with his presence on stage. The group also used lasers, a light show and smoke, bombs, all deftly handled by friends of the band. ''Osiris'' was recorded at the only 8- track studio in Bahrain at the time. It was recorded and mixed in just three days. As there wasn't any record pressing plant in Bahrain, the band had to press the albums in Philippines. 1000 copies were sold locally at Bahrain but a few made it their way to USA and the UK, appearing in some rare records list by ''those in the know''. Osiris music will not only please those into classic prog- rock in the Camel, Yes or Pink Floyd vein but also those for looking for exotic psychedelic sounds and beats.

[engl] Can you imagine a Dutch band playing top- notch 60s- 70s sounding Brazilian music? Beautiful femme vocals, superb musicianship featuring the awesome lead electric guitar of Jeanette van der Pligt, self- penned songs and choice covers of Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto and Rita Lee among others. Palmeira was a Brazilian styled band formed by Angelo Noce Santoro (ex- Cosmic Dealer) along with some Dutch, North American and Brazilian musicians. The group existed from 1979 till 1985, playing lots of gigs at jazz and night clubs in Holland. In 1983 they released their only album in a private edition of 500 copies on Angelos ANS label. PEPE SANCHEZ Y SU ROCK BAND

    Regresion

[engl] Spanish jazz–funk / prog–psych holy grail from 1976 featuring the crème de la crème of Spain’s session musicians of the time. Pepe Sánchez is a real legend when talking about drumming in Spain. From his beginnings in the 60s jamming with Pedro Iturralde, Tete Montoliu and Vlady Bas at the influential Whisky Jazz Club in Madrid, to recording in Miami with Diana Ross or Barbra Streisand; from working under the wings of Rafael Trabucchelli, Waldo de los Ríos, Augusto Algueró and Mancini to playing live with Barry White? Not forgetting his incursions in progressive rock with Araxes or doing session work for seminal Spanish albums like "Gipsy Rock" by Las Grecas among others. Pepe and his group of friends (Manuel Gas, Juan Carlos Calderón, Pepe Ébano, Tito Duarte, Juan Cano?) were the most requested Spanish session musicians of the time, appearing in countless recordings. In the mid–70s, he was approached by the Marfer label: the idea was to create an instrumental album based on Flamenco music and Spanish folklore but with a modern approach, adding electric guitars, electric bass, drums?Pepe recruited some his friends, all of them top session musicians with a jazz / pop background and the result was "Regresión", his first solo album, released in 1976. It’s an incredible fusion of jazz, funk, rock, flamenco and psychedelic / progressive sounds highlighted by the powerful drumming of Pepe, the wicked fuzz–wah guitar of Carlos Villa (Vainica Doble, Las Grecas), the sax / flute of jazz giant Pedro Iturralde and Manolo Morales (Jayme Marques, Bebu Silvetti?), the piano of Eddy Guerin (Tete Montoliu, Santisteban, Jayme Marques, Manuel Gas?), the trumpet of Juan Cano (Vlady Bass, Juan Carlos Calderón?) and José Luis Medrano (Dolores, Márquez?), the percussion of Pepe Ébano (Elkin & Nelson, Manuel Gas, Camarón, Max B, Santisteban)? Includes the monster rare groove /funk track "Sentimiento" and more!

    RAMESH

    Ramesh

[engl] In 1970s Tehran, the classically- trained Ramesh played the serious, quiet marquess against Googooshs langorous pop princess. Both singers made the papers every time they changed their haircuts & appeared on tv frequently. However, while Googoosh now runs a cosmetics company in Los Angeles, they say Ramesh was killed in the political turmoil of the late 70s because she was a lesbian. Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that she was a funky queen whose rich voice sits like a fat mink coat, twirling its melancholy way around long- necked lutes, backed by flurries of frame & goblet drums. And the sleazy, Western brass, strings & synths are here too, slathered across rare singles for your shameless dancing pleasure. Welcome to the unpredictable world of pre- revolutionary Iranian pop music.
