    MESS FOLK

This is Mess Folk… and more!

[engl] MESS FOLK is from Sydney, Nova Scotia, in Canada. It was started by Philip Tarr in December 2008. This is a complation record featuring various recordings from 2008-2010. This is basicly the 12 Song „This is Mess Folk” Tape, released in 2009. It first came out with a couple of copies as self release, then SCOTCH TAPES did a batch of 100 copies. Three songs ended up an a 7" out on HOZAC records. This LP also has 10 new and unreleased songs. All songs have been mastered for this release by Justin Perkins. Now as you know the story, start listining to these devastating cuts of delusional inner turmoil that sets in after months of cabin fever. What else can you expect, when growing up in a small industrial city which is known for pretty much one thing: being the secondlargest toxic environmental disaster hot spot in Canada. „When the three major industries that supported Sydney collapsed in the late 60s, they left 700,000 tons of chemical waste and raw sewage filling about the size of three city blocks, and a lot of broke, angry people who speak funny. This place is known as the Tar Ponds. It’s entirely fitting that this isolated area, with just about the highest rates of cancer, birth defects, and miscarriages in the country, would push one of the most messed-up new voices in the garage rock scene through it’s contaminated thighs.” [Vice Magazine intro for the MESS FOLK interview] Thanks to drugs and insanity MESS FOLK mastermind Philip Tarr composed pieces of music with extraordinary beautiful titles like „I Shit Blood”, „Give Me a Gun” and „High as Hell”. The music itself sounds like proto punk recorded in a 4x4 meter bedroom, doors locked, windows nailed down and the air filled with a mixture of angst, paranoia and hate. What did you expect? Sugar-coated Anti Folk? Come on.... This is Mess Folk. MESS FOLK are a real band now. New album will be recorded later in 2010. This is for those who snoozed and missed this band so far, and for those who wrecked the tape already, after to many runs....

Uh Uh / Standing The Night

[engl] It’s been quiet for some time for MISS CHAIN ND THE BROKEN HEELS, the extensive touring after their second album (The Dawn, released by Burger, Bachelor and Tre Accordi), band members went their own way to persue solo careers, starting a booking agency, buidling a studio, and just taking a breath, italian style. After few months things started to get together again, they did some shows in the spring of 2016 and baboom: Here is their new classic two song single, fresh and new, as if there hasnt been some kind of hiatus. You can easily hear it exactly 1 second after you let the needle drop on the Side A track, after few chords Miss Chain and the gang ooozes a warm feeling into your head and heart! Hell, they are back, with all the goodtime melodies enriched with their typical melancholy vibe. While the first track is a classic uptempo powerpop tune, the flipside presents a slower hipshaker, and although the velocity has been taken out this one is still a fine, mellow mood maker that leaves you hungry for more!

    MORDBUBEN AG

    MYELINS SHEATHS

    Stackticon

[engl] Cassandra, Joel, Martine and Paul went to the lab and found the perfect formula on how to start an extraordinary band: ”None of us really knew how to play our instruments very well, but we shared similar tastes in music and were getting stoked about the same bands (the Urinals, the Cramps, the Gories, Mark Sultan, Cheap Time, Wax Museums, Nobunny, Wicked Awesomes, The Spits,) and decided that we could probably succeed in an experiment of having fun.” And out comes one of the most thrilling singles in 2009... a tightrope walk between noise and melody, weirdo punk and lyrics about scientific observations.... they have another 7" out on HOZAC soon. Print Run: 500 copies, black vinyl, housed in a full color cardboard sleeve. Recorded at Mammoth Cave Studios, Alberta, Canada. Artwork and layout by CMR.

    NEW SWEARS

    Junkfood forever, bedtime whatever

[engl] Best thing in Canada right now, and Canada’s full of brilliant bands these days. NEW SWEARS are back with their new album “Junkfood Forever, Bedtime Whenever” only about one year after the release of their debut album “Funny Isn’t Real” (Bachelor / Dirt Cult) which got raaaaving reviews all over the world. The sound of the first album was a bit crummy / lo-fi in some way, this has changed totally here, but still they ride the rollercoaster in the theme park called “Rock n Roll all night and party every day”... “New Swears are a joyful and wasted party... brimming with feel-good tambo shakers and guitar hooks. Surfy with punk hooks and smilyfaced vocals exploding with danger, fun, youth... these dudes crap out catchy riffs like golden eggs, everything is light, uptempo and catchy as shit!” (Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover) In four words, New Swears encapsulate their Poochie-esque core: Junkfood forever. Bedtime? Whatever! These four Ottawa dudes have written a genuinely fun record—handclaps and chugging, sunny riffs in tow—full of songs about smoking weed, drinking, having sex, and, generally speaking, not giving a shit and having a good time. Do they break shit? You better believe it. Do they care about the bullshit? No way. The record might be best exemplified by "Legalize Freedom", a deep-voiced, sketchy track about outrunning the cops and doing coke and sleeping with prostitutes. This sounds more like a low-budget exploitation film than a gritty account of real life, but like a lot of low-budget exploitation films, this thing is fun. (Pitchfork.com)

    PAINT FUMES

    Real Romancer

[engl] The Paint Fumes are back for good! Take a sip and get high on their hooks and sing-a-longs.#Paint Fumes have survived a decade of being in Paint Fumes. No small feat for a group that's released 3 albums for 2 distinct luminary labels (Slovenly and Get Hip Records), and swayed their way between opposite ends of a sonic spectrum (garage and punk; old and new) on a nofucks-given wrecking-ball pendulum. Evolution occurred steadily from their earliest primitivism to more tuneful rockers. Road dogs when allowed to be, they toured exhaustively (including stints with legends King Khan & BBQ Show and Shannon & the Clams). Throughout, they racked more hospital stays—not to mention near-death experiences— than advisable by even the most nihilistic breed of rock'n'roll life-or-deathers. And yet now, after all the years and rigmarole, they've never sounded this good! Real Romancer, Paint Fumes' 4th LP—and first for Dig! Records (US) and Bachelor Records (EU)—is a whole new world of glam stompin', duel-guitar with added bass hammerin' sounds taken to anthemic heights previously unexplored by this born too loose group. If leader of the pack Elijah Von Cramon's description of the band as “panic attack punk and power pop nightmares” rings true, this is Paint Fumes' KBD-benzo treat-all for a 12 song long wet dream.

    PARROTS, THE

    Loving you is hard

[engl] The Parrots is a fresh-from-college young garage-surf trio from Madrid, Spain that's causing a commotion in the garage-surf scene this year. Last year they self-released a demo EP; the video for the main track on this demo has already 32.000 views on YouTube and shows a band that knows how to have fun playing great must. Their first official recording was a 7" released in early 2014 via cult indie label from Madrid, Sonido Muchacho. The live video of one of the songs on this single (“Dee Dee Dangerous”), filmed on stage in Amsterdam's Red Light District (where they recorded it), got 50.000 views in just two weeks. Before the end of 2013 they recorded two more tracks with legendary Spanish producer Paco Loco (The Posies, Las Kellies, The Sadies, The Jayhawks, Steve Wynn...) for their second 7" to be released in August via Bachelor Records from Austria (sharing catalogue with such favourites as Black Lips, Dead Ghosts, Hunx, Smith Westerns...). Their fresh sound, reminding of American bands such as Black Lips or Strange Boys, got them invitations to perform at the main Spanish festivals. For the summer of 2014 they've already played FIB Benicassim, Low Festival, Vida, Mona Fest, Arenal, FRA and many others. The band was selected to perform in March 2014 at South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, where they played three unofficial day parties as well as the official festival showcase. In the meantime, Converse used their track Gigantic Trees (off the debut 7”) in several videos, namely one that was shown in all the Target stores across the US during the first quarter of 2014. The Parrots have also been invited to perform at Liverpool Sound City Festival in Liverpool, UK, in May; and on the same month they played their first show in France, preceding a longer tour in France in the fall. The Parrots are just starting their career, but the buzz about them has crossed the Spanish borders and is quickly spreading around the world. Don't get left behind!

    PATSYS RATS

    Singles

[engl] In the bands short years so far PATSY'S RATS have been very productive when it comes to putting out singles on various labels all over this globe. You should of course track down all of them, collect them and play them when you are DJing at your favorite club, someone's birthday party or when you are day drunk on weekends. Singles are great! I know that – and you know that. But SINGLES COMPILATIONS are great too! Expecially if the singles have a constant high level like those released from PATSY'S RATS – and you don't have to stop dancing to flip the sides or put on another 45! “Rock n Roll Friend” and “Hard Time Karen” appear on their first record, released in summer 2016 on La-Ti-Da Records. “It’s Gonna Hurt” was intended to be on the single as well but there was not enough space on the vinyl... “Burning Honey” and “Nowhere Close” appear on the second single, which was released on Dig! Records in fall 2016. “Empty Bottle” and “Let's Stay Up All Night” were recorded in the same session and appeared on a limited square hand cut record released by Super Fan 99 Records. All above songs also appeared on a cassette on Burger Records. “More Than This” is a Roxy Music cover, it appeared on a digital only compilation on Super Fan 99 Records in summer 2017, it's a collection of covers that derive from Sofia Coppola films. “Rounding Up” and “Little Rat Charm” were released on Dirtnap Records, “It's Alright?” and “Givin' Up” were released on Wink and Spit Records, both in the summer of 2017. This is not only a collection of singles, this is infact a perfect powerpop album you’ve been waiting since the FASTBACKS and BUSY SIGNALS All songs written by Patsy Gelb and Christian Blunda.

    Gentle Leader

    PEACH KELLI POP

    III

[engl] Peach Kelli Pop originated when Allie Hanlon, originally a drummer, decided to try writing and recording songs in Ottawa, Canada in 2009. Hanlon started out writing not for an audience but for herself. The intimate quality of her bedroom recordings have been maintained to this day. On first listen one will hear high-pitched harmonies and thick layers of trebly guitars but just below the surface lays an evocative darker side to the music that often goes unnoticed. Hanlon is known for her catchy and tongue-in-cheek songs inspired by video games, Chinese food and conspiracy theorists, illustrating not only her playfulness but also her wit and her angst. She also grapples with more serious topics like the pressures and challenges women face and the weight of love. Some songs feature the sounds and words of frustrated heartache and recognizable sorrows. Those that spend enough time with Hanlon’s music will grasp its depth –both musically and emotionally. Peach Kelli Pop plays with the type of urgency and immediacy that appeals to an audience with short attention spans. Hanlon fronts Peach Kelli Pop’s energetic live shows on guitar and vocals and is backed by an assembly of female musicians. The live band consists of an additional guitarist, a bassist, a keyboardist and percussionist and a drummer. Hanlon has been playing with all female musicians in recent years because she recalls being inspired by seeing other women play shows as a teen. In the male-dominated music world, it affirmed her own potential for writing and playing music.

    PEACH KELLI POP

    s/t

[engl] PEACH KELLI POP began as an experiment for Allie Hanlon - a way for the drummer to step out from behind her kit and try writing songs. In case you dont know, she‘s the drummer for WHITE WIRES who have two albums out on Going Gaga / Douchemaster and Dirtnap, toured through Europe and USA. Allie Hanlon always had her own musical outlet, since 2009, her music has gone from the Ottawa basements and bedrooms where it spawned, to all corners of Canada and the USA. She has toured under the PEACH KELLI POP moniker the USA multiple times with various friends completing her live band. Hanlon's output is slow - 3 years after the first self-titled album - her second, also self-titled, is finally due out on Austria's Bachelor records. This time round you can hear a distinct improvement in production quality. Both albums were written, performed and recorded entirely by Hanlon, and it is clear she has learned a thing or two since her genuinely amateur debut. The second album is a sort of continuation of the last - songs about love, loss, fun, still laced with the same sass and femininity, but with significantly faster tempos and a welcome dash of distortion. The 10 track album features a diverse range of instruments and is very concise, lasting under 25 minutes. Quick songs with driving 4/4 beats, harmonies and pop melodies for miles. Recommended for fans of the GOGO‘S, NIKKI & THE CORVETTES, THE QUICK and THE PEECHEES.

    PIPSQUEAK

    Aint that sad

[engl] Long time ago, slightly drunk after the lunch break, and I wanted to chill a little bit and play EMERALD MINE on my Commodore 128D. I couldn’t find the right 5 ¼ inch floppy disk and it made me angry so I called Mindy via intercom. Well, she came in, also a bit tipsy, and sat on my desk, right where this white foldable device with the apple on it was standing, an apple that has been used already cause you can easily see that someone has bitten of a piece. Anyways, this thing began to send audio signals of superior quality, true in sound but I couldn’t get the lyrics. After very entertaining 2 hours I called the interns to find out what this is and I also gave them a recording contract and instructions on how to get this “artist”. Now, only 2 years later I finally have the lyrics! Printed with black ink on with paper, on the inlay of the PIPSQUEAK debut vinyl 7”! Man, that was a crazy day. 500 black vinyl.

    POWERCHORDS

    More than me

[engl] It‘s hard to toss the term „Poppunk” nowadays, it has become a generic term for commercial-radio music that has guitars and drums. Poppunk isnt punk that was just polished to make it suiteable for everyone‘s ears. Poppunk is snotty and fast 77 styled songs mangled and put on a griddle, strewn with sugar and cut into pieces that have the exact songs structure of 60ties heroes like ZOMBIES and BEACH BOYS with a touch of UNTERTONES and BUZZCOCKS. These two songs here are the perfect example of how simple and catchy songs can sound, and how hard it must be to assemble all the pop hooks and harmonies. It‘s no surprise that we are proud to have them on our label! Print Run: 500 copies, black vinyl, housed in a full color cardboard sleeve.
