[engl] Reissue of the 2010 release on Sing Sing Records, NYC, USA. This is the first album of PROTEX, recorded in 1979-1980 for a release on Polydor records, but the record never came out because the label was interested in the next big thing, after punk rock.... The guys from Sing Sing Records unearthed this masterpiece and put it out in 2010, it was sold out and OOP soon afterwards. So nearly 10 years after you have the possibility to buy this classic for a normal price. The Bachelor Records release of "Strange Obsessions" is not only a simple repress, we managed to improve the sound and speed, thanks to Eric Brady, PLUS the artwork was changed a bit too!

    REAL NUMBERS

    EP

[engl] This is the kind of garage punk that makes me glad that I am not completely deaf yet , but I will soon be because I cannot stop listening to these four songs without pumping up the volume just a little bit more after every song. This is the second single of this trio from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and its just not too trashy so you can easily play it when you are DJing at the local hipster hangout and leave the RIP OFFS, PROBLEMATICS, TEENGENERATE and RAYDIOS singles at home cause they have been recorded way to crappy anyways. REAL NUMBERS take the punk edges of before mentioned bands and drench it into a bittersweet juice. Recorded by Brian Hermosillo.

    ROKKER

    s/t

[engl] Welcome to one of Punk Rocks most peculiar and best hidden secrets: ROKKER! Their oddball 1980 Album on Owl Records with 10 enthusiastic raunchy lo-fi cuts is one of the definitive Punk Rock mystery albums out there sold for absurd prices. The songs of the album have been traded on DIY cassette compilations for ages but very rarely you met someone who had the actual record. The relentless teenage symphonies on the platter deal about being a ROKKER having to put up with all the wankers out there, tall sugar girls and Punk Rock themes like anger in classroom, being disconnected or having the Rock fever. The records alltime outright Überhit – Who's a Punk? Your Mother! is the bizzare portrayal of the American middle class “happy family” in the 70's. Listening to these hymns no one would ever think that ROKKER actually had two “careers” up their sleeves in parallel: A Country'n'Blues band in the bright light of day and a fierce Punk Rock band by night. This double burden took its toll somewhen in the early 80's and ROKKER passed over into the happy hunting grounds. A fate shared with so many great bands of the 70's and 80's.

Oh yes, three very active scenesters who play in maybe 10 other bands as well gave it a shot, and here is a record they cut under the strange moniker SALAMIRECORDER & THE HI-FI PHONOS. I did not ask them about the reason or meaning of this band name. I supposed i won't get any enlightning answers anyway. But well! Here it is! A record full of fresh trashy garage surf punk music with a truckload of reverb and echoes, and cryptic song titles. No mere nostalgia mongers, SALAMIRECORDER & THE HI-FI PHONOS sound old and new at the same time, the songs are sometimes harsh and loud but still contain enough melody to turn every live show into a wylde dance party!

    SHIRLEY MACLAINES, THE

    Want you to go

Anyone can do that.... I CAN DO THAT!”

    SONIC CHICKEN 4

    s/t

[engl] After releasing a string of seven inches on NASTY PRODUCT, recieving glowing reviews in magazines, webzines and blogs across the globe, and playing dates in Europe and the USA, SONIC CHICKEN 4 inked a deal with one of the leading garage punk record labels, IN THE RED, to release their first full-length back in 2007. The album got raving reviews so the band decided to tour the USA in 2009. Then they did singles on ROBS HOUSE and TROUBLE IN MIND and recorded another full length that was supposed to come out in 2009 just in time for another US adventure, this one with appearances at Goner Fest 6 (Memphis) and Scion Fest (Portland). When this tour began, the album was postponed by the label. They went back to Europe to do another month of touring… and the album was postponed again... and until now it never came out. In 2010 the band slowly stopped its activity... stopped playing live and stopped practicing. Years later Dusty Medical Records (Milwaukee, MI) and Bachelor Records (Austria) rediscovered this „lost“ 12 song masterpiece, a garage punk gem from a looong forgotten time. Yes its true, only about 5 years ago this thing we call Garage Punk sounded a lot different! That was before this genre was washed down by hipsters, before it was cool to shake bums to primitive beats. Before garage punk bands had booking agencies, five-page hospitality riders and tuners… This album is a document from a not so long-gone era. Recorded in only two days in a Spanish castle in Valencia, produced by King Khan with help from Isidro (Wau y los Arrghs) and mixed by the band in Perpignan, France, the 12 songs serve as a wayback machine. Try it… take a sip and go T-R-I-P-P-I-N-G! SOUNDS LIKE: a fuzzy, ultra primitive brand of garage stomp that owes equally to 60's pop, VU, Back From The Grave comps, girl groups and Jaques DuTronc. Some kind of borderline garage sixties punk...

    SPACE RAFT

    Rubicon

[engl] The hallmark of a great band is its ability to progress, to change from record to record. Even a brilliant debut cannot sustain a group throughout their entire career. Thankfully for music fans, Space Raft has that ability in spades. Hints of the best of '60's and '70's rock are combined with the dynamism and immediacy of modern post-punk to produce an ever-shifting backdrop of melodic innovation that moves forward several leagues from their self-titled debut.Their new album "Rubicon" (out April 15 on Dusty Medical Records in the USA and Bachelor Records in Europe) takes the positive attributes of their self-titled debut and expands on every aspect of their sound; from pop-rock hooks (opener "Borrowed Time," standalone single "Paper Airplanes") to drifting melodies ("Vacation") to euphoric instrumental passages ("Disconnection Notice," "Red Arrow").This can be attributed in part to Space Raft's consistent membership; after working together for years Jordan Davis (guitar, vocals), TJay Christenson (keyboards), Jon Heibler (bass) and Tyler Chicorel (drums) have a second sense about what will and will not combine fluidly; this interplay is crucial to their multi-faceted sound. Also integral to their sound is the one-two punch of recording with Shane Hochstetler at Howl Street Studios in Milwaukee, and the mastering skills of Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering.

    SPACE RAFT

    s/t

[engl] Whatever image that the name "Space Raft" might conjure up for you, just forget it. They are not specifically a psych band, or a retro-glam outfit, or a blatant '70's throwback. They are, instead, a classically brilliant pop-rock combo which incorporates elements of all the above while working by their own rules, beholden to no genre. Space Raft, their debut album, is proof positive of this. Formed in 2012 by ex-Mystery Girls guitarist Jordan Davis, former Temper Temper keyboardist TJay Christenson, Father Phoenix drummer Tyler Chicorel (who currently handles bass duties for the equally awesome Call Me Lightning) and Goodnight Loving bassist Colin Swinney, the band currently includes bassist Srini Radhakrishna (Circles, Football, France Has The Bomb), following Swinney's departure to California. The camaraderie amongst Space Raft's members is obvious upon listening to their music; there is a definite interplay between all of them that contributes to a fully-formed vision. Healthy helpings of melody, rhythmic diversity, and intriguing instrumentation make their self-titled debut LP a constantly shifting, magical entity. There's an almost science-fiction element to many of their songs, such as "Jupiter Calling" and "Anything is Possible" which is completely in line with the effects-laden guitar lines and washes of keyboard. However, Space Raft can abruptly shift gears into songs such as "We Are Not Alone" or "Rescue Mission" which are pop at its finest. Diversity is the key to Space Raft, a quality which, unfortunately, is sadly lacking in many modern bands.

    SPIKE & THE SWEET SPOTS

    Strange Breed

[engl] DEBUT LP by Chicago's folk rock darlings, SPIKE AND THE SWEET SPOTS! Limited pressing of 300. Also out on Randy Records, USA. At a time when it seems that most rock n roll bands bury their vocals under a mountain of reverb, with the lyrics mostly unintelligible, and the voice treated as just another instrument, Spike and the Sweet Spots stand as a powerful counterpoint. They are a band for whom good songwriting and good lyrics are at the forefront. Above everything, Spencer “Spike” Johnson is a songwriter – a man who idolizes such lyrical heavyweights as Bob Dylan, Daniel Johnston, Lou Reed, or more recently The Dutchess and the Duke, Home Blitz, or Juan Wuaters. And with role models like those, you can rest assured that you will never hear a Sweet Spots song with cliché or rehashed lyrics. And on their debut album “Strange Breed”, every song is thoughtful, heartfelt, clever, and well executed. For the last ten years, Spike has played in Chicago’s favorite party rock band, The Yolks, and lent his pen to write many of their best songs. But at the same time was ripping it up with The Yolks, he was sometimes writing songs that did not match the high energy rock n roll songs in a typical Yolks set. And so he started his own group as a vehicle for these great songs he was writing that were too mellow for The Yolks, but too good to just let lay fallow. Such a path from garage punk to folk rock is not uncommon in rock n roll. Think of Greg Cartwright who went from The Oblivians to the Reigning Sound, or Jesse Lortz who went from The Fe Fi Fo Fums to The Dutchess And The Duke. And the results are similar for Spike and the Sweet Spots: a great folk band with a rock n roll heart that writes great, memorable songs. For the last few years, Chicago has been keeping this amazing band our little secret, but with this debut LP, the secret is finally out! Spike and the Sweet Spots are amazing, this album is amazing, so go out and get it, open up your ears, open up your heart, and let the love flow!
