    ACTION

    Rolled Gold

The legendary 1967–68 recordings by UK mod band THE ACTION, registered when they were in transition from mod–beat to full–blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming MIGHTY BABY. Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, "Rolled Gold" is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action’s classic line–up of Reg King, Alan ’Bam’ King, Michael Evans and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute / organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the West Coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane. Always the stuff of legend, The "Rolled Gold" tapes were shelved at the time, not released until 1997 when the Dig The Fuzz label discovered them and did a limited LP/CD run. Out of print on vinyl for many years, we present a new vinyl edition. If you dig the psychedelic era of SMALL FACES, PRETTY THINGS, THE WHO, plus THE CREATION, NAZZ, TOMORROW, BLOSSOM TOES, THE END or TRAFFIC...look no further.

    BIXBY, DAVE

    Ode to Quetzalcoatl (US Cover)

Since its discovery in the late 90s, Dave Bixby’s legendary $2000 private press album from 1969 is considered by all serious record collectors as the king in the loner/downer folk genre. After being involved in 60s Michigan folk and garage–rock bands such as The Shillelaghs and Peter & The Prophets, Bixby started playing acoustic guitar and experimenting with LSD. After a year of drug abuse he felt broken. Starting a soul–searching, spiritual journey, he wrote "Ode to Quetzalcoatl" and most of the material for his second album, Harbinger’s "Second Coming" in just one month and a half. Assisted by fellow musician Brian MacInness, who played some guitar parts on the album, Dave recorded "Quetzalcoatl" using a echo–laden four track machine in a flat’s living room. The sound is lo–fi and sparse: just acoustic guitars and some occasional harmonica & flute, added to Bixby’s haunting, emotional vocals, spiritual lyrics and solid songwriting. The opening cut, the eerie and painful "Drug Song" sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the album which contains more tormented titles like "666" , "Lonely faces", Open Doors", "Secret forest"...Never an acoustic folk album sounded so intense as this. Carefully remastered sound from vinyl (no master tapes exists) done at Shadoks Music Studios, insert with extensive and detailed liner notes by Matvei Procak – the guy who found Bixby in 2006 – plus some rare pictures.

    CYMBELINE

    1965 - 1971

Previously unreleased DIY homemade psychedelia, teenbeat and fuzz-psych/prog by this amazing Swedish band, 1965-1971!! Tracks like “Third Image” or “Look at the stars” are an incredible find for anyone into US garage-psych (they wouldn’t sound out of place on any Pebbles or Psychedelic Unknowns volume!) and others like “Flicka”, “Stolta Vingar” or “Mittuppslag” are top notch ‘70s fuzzed out Scandinavian psych/prog. We can’t believe that such fabulous stuff has remained hidden in a carboard box until now. Formed in the industrial town of Norrköping in the mid ‘60s, Cymbeline (also known as Motala Ström and W&J) only released a 45 in 1971 before breaking up. But during their existence, the band recorded a lot of stuff, included here for the first time along with their rare 45. Cymbeline was basically two guys, Michael Journath and Anders Weyde, who met in 1965 while they both played in beat bands. They started recording songs at Anders little home studio with help with some friends and that’s how songs like “Imagination” and “Look at the stars”, amazing examples of homemade teen-beat, were born. At the same time, Michael and Anders were feeling a bit tired of playing cover versions with their beat bands so decided to start recording more experimental stuff, using armchairs and furniture as percussion, sounds from seagulls and birds, an electric cocktail mixer, improvising lyrics…these incredible experiments were recorded as “Images”, including the killer garage-psych sounding “Third Image”.

    NEW TWEEDY BROTHERS

    The New Tweedy Bros!

100% uncut psychedelia and garagey, jangly folk–rock from 1968 Originally from Portland, the New Tweedy Brothers were formed by brothers Fred and Danny Lackaff plus Dennis Fagaly and Steve Ekman. In 1966, they relocated to San Francisco, where they were part of the exploding, nascent psychedelic Ballroom scene, influencing none other than Jerry Garcia and sharing stage with bands like The Warlocks (pre–Grateful Dead), Quicksilver and Big Brother among others. Upon returning to Oregon, they self–released in 1968 their only album, housed in a striking hexagonal, over–sized silver foil cover, now a holy grail between psychedelic collectors. Innocent vocal harmonies, fuzzy bass, jangly guitars, raga sounds...

    ELLISON

    Ellison

Blastin underground hard- rock from Canada, 1971. Ultra raw guitars and lots of attitude. Think Black Sabbath and Elias Hulk!! Ellison were formed in Montreal in late 1967 by Vincent Marandola, Richard Arcand, Robert Cager and Christian Tremblay. The band started playing quite frequently in and around Montreal, and actually played a few other gigs in Quebec. They recorded their one and only LP in 1971, originally released on Trans- World Records. Here's a welcome reissue of this rare and sought- after album. Newly remastered sound. Insert with liner notes and photos. LP housed in an old- school- style tip- on sleeve. "They come across as cavemen with big amps, which of course isn't a bad thing within a heavy rock framework...One of the best hard rock LPs from anywhere in the world..." - Clark Faville

    UTHER PENDRAGON

    San Francisco Earthquake

This is the incredible story of Uther Pendragon: a lost psychedelic band from San Francisco whose music has remained buried until now. Formed in the Bay Area in 1966 as a teen garage group called Blue Fever, Uther Pendragon lasted from 1966 until 1978. During that time, the band went through different names and phases, as their music evolved from garage to psychedelia to hard-rock: they were known as Blue Fever, Timne, Hodological Mandala, Mandala, Kodiac, Justus, Pendragon…but the core of the band remained always the same: Mark Lightcap (rhythm guitar, vocals), Bruce Marelich (lead guitar, vocals) and Martin Espinosa (bass, vocals) who after finding their ultimate drummer on Mike Beers, finally settled on the Uther Pendragon name in the early 70s. But despite being in active for all that time and recording lot of tapes and demos at different studios (including their own one in Palo Alto), Uther Pendragon never released any recording at the time. They’re not even a footnote on the books about the San Francisco Sound or a small name at those psychedelic posters of the time. Nothing. It’s as if they never existed. Until now. Their complex and fascinating story, which involves winning a Bay Area Battle Of The Bands and playing with Country Joe & The Fish, recording a killer garage-psych 7” acetate in 1967, going to the legendary Pacific Sound Recording studios in 1969 to record a demo, living as a family in the same house for many years and rehearsing 7 days a week, building their own recording studio and music corporation, being managed by Craig Pedersen (Something Wild, Tripsichord Music Box), being involved in an occult-themed rock opera called Sabbat, and much more, is being told with all details by Mike Stax from Ugly Things in the extensive liner notes.

    ATHANOR

    Flashback

Chicago, early 70s. Greg Herriges is obsessed with Lennon, 12- string guitars and far- out psychedelic sounds. Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys- Hollies- Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage- college bands during the 60s. Combining their mutual love for Sixties music, Athanor was born. With the help of top studio musicians, they recorded and self- released three 45s between 1973 and 1975 (the first one produced by Mark Breyer, with whom Rick had played in pre- Skooshny band Brevity) which are now highly sought- after by fans of obscure psychedelic pop. All of them are featured here in stellar sound taken from the master tapes along with previously unreleased studio tracks and superb sounding home demos (1973- 1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006 in the same vein as their vintage recordings. Athanors music features impressive songwriting & musicianship, a collision of Beatlesque harmony vocals, Rickenbacker & Guild 12- string guitars, occasional fuzz- wah leads, Fender Rhodes, studio effects. Psychedelic proto- power pop highly recommended to anyone into Lazy Smoke, Badfinger, Only Ones, Emitt Rhodes, Rockin? Horse, Creme Soda.?

    MANÇO, BARIS

    Yeni Bir Gün

The late 70s found Turkey in an economic slump, and there was a huge rise in political violence. Baris, who so often put out collections of singles, rose to the occasion by spending 6 months holed up with his longtime backing band the Kurtalan Ekspres. The result was this studio album of Anatolian bummer psychedelia, often unfairly overlooked because it came out in the rather un- cosmic year of 1979, but also considered his best work by many. Yep, there are still electrified versions of Turkish folk songs, and the spaceshot ARPs & Korgs of 2023 are here too, but dont expect a happy swing around the ceiling of a planetarium. The real star of the album is the keyboard player, whose name translates to Sword Agent. Yeni Bir Gun is viciously funky & brilliantly arranged, with tidbits stolen out of the latest disco hits, & lean, mean synthesizers that emerge from the beats like carbonated bubbles. Melancholy maqams & catastrophic Korgs collide when the Turkish psych master glides unflinchingly into the grim late 70s!! First time ever reissue, this release comes in gorgeous gatefold cover as the original, has a repro of the original poster as well, and brings an extra insert with extensive linernotes.

    WICKED LADY

    The axeman cometh

If you are looking for raw, psychedelic hard- rock, look no further! We present the complete recordings (1968- 1972) from Wicked Lady, the legendary UK underground power trio leaded by ace guitarist Martin Weaver, later a member of Dark on their ''Round the edges'' album. Here's the first volume of our Wicked Lady collection, both a CD version and a lavish double vinyl of ''The Axeman Cometh''. Our edition features new artwork and liner notes by doomy psychedelic guitar God in person, Martin Weaver, who tells the real (and bizarre!) story behind Wicked Lady for the first time. The stuff of a legend, this is a real fest of fuzz, wah- wah and heavy riffs that will blow the mind of any hard- psych collector.

    ATHANOR

    Inside out: the demos 1973-1977

The follow- up to our acclaimed ''Flashback'' (Guess110), finds Athanor (the duo formed by Greg Herriges and Rick Vittenson) digging deeper into their archives and coming out with and amazing set of previously unreleased recordings, done at their state- of- the- art home studio back at the time. Captivating Beatle'esque, fuzzed- out psychedelia & folk- rock full of Lennon- esque vocals and 12- string Rickenbackers by '70s Chicago wunderkind duo. 1973- 1977 recordings plus one '70s- era track cut in 2014 with Jeff Murphy (Shoes) on backup vocals. Basement psych- pop and proto- power pop has rarely sounded better! Remastered sound from the original tapes, insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things/Got Kinda Lost) and Jeff Murphy (Shoes).'' These aren't longing, writing demos with tossed- off guide attempts, but instead full- form creations? The pulsating waves of snaking fuzz opening the set with ''Love Shining'' prepare you for the trip with an indelible riff, while moments of soul exorcism lay bare elsewhere'' - Jeremy Cargill

    GIGYMEN

    Gigymen

We are very proud to present the first ever reissue of this lost treasure, originally an obscure private pressing of just 100 copies. Gigymen were a college circuit band from Cambridge who in 1974 recorded their only album at Spaceward Studios. Stunning folk- rock / folk- pop with pro- recorded sound, superb musicianship and strong songwriting. With influences ranging from Fairport Convention to The Beatles, here you'll find some superb folk- rock adaptations of traditional songs such like ''As I roved out'', ''Gypsy Laddie'' and ''Rocky Road to Dublin'' along with fab folk- pop with Beatlesque vocals on tracks like ''Plain Jane'' or ''Gone are the days''. The album was originally released with only a blank paper sheet with the credits on the cover so we've designed a new front sleeve for our reissue. Insert with rare pictures and detailed liner notes is also included.

    MCKAY

    A new light shines

Ray McKay Pierle started recording his own songs in 1974 and in 1977 he released his first album, ?Into You?, which is one of the finest West Coast / rural- rock private pressing ever. ?A New Light Shines? collects previously unreleased tracks recorded at home between 1974 and 1979. The overall sound here is more psychedelic, raw and loose than what you can hear on his other albums, ?Into You? and ?Take Two? but you can expect the same kind of laid- back sound, top- level songwriting, Neil Young- esque vocals and outlaw guitars. An exciting find for any lover of West Coast / Psychedelia / Rural- Rock / Obscure US private press sounds!

    SHOCK

    Shock!

We are very excited to present what it's for us the major discovery in the Spanish Psych- Prog collector scene: a previously unreleased album from 1970 by this obscure Spanish garage- psych band. Until now, Shock were a total mystery. They only released one 45 back at the time (the killer acid- fuzz punker ''No se puede ser Superman'') and nothing was known about the band...until we tracked them down. We discovered that prior to their 45 release, they recorded a whole album which was never released. Shock's music is underground garage- psychedelia with crude acid- fuzz guitar, effects, English vocals...think of Agua de Regaliz, early Pan & Regaliz, Cerebrum or even obscure Brazilian bands such as Tobruk but with a more primitive sound. The album features ten songs including the original versions of the two tracks later re- recorded for their only 45: ''No se puede ser Superman'' (titled here ''I'm being mad'', it's a different and superior English sung version) and ''I want to laugh'' (a longer version than the one included on the 45). Remastered from the original 2- track tape (which is unfortunately not in perfect condition, but more than good enough), insert with detailed liner notes in English / Spanish, 180gr vinyl. CD comes with colour booklet.

    YVES, SERGE & VICTOR

    Cagibi

Mega- rare private pressing from France, 1975, with only 300 copies made. Pretty unknown album, and a killer!!! Nothing you would expect from a French record, really?.this is 100% USA early 70's sounding stuff, West Coast folk- rock with a psychedelic edge, CSNY feel, acoustic & electric guitars, some fierce fuzz assaults, English vocals? an incredible discovery! The original pressing came with plain white cover, and a few copies were later pasted- on with a few very low quality photos. For this reissue, we have used that paste- on collage, and added some more stuff in the back- cover with photos from Serge's archive. Fully remastered sound, linernotes and limited to 500 copies.

    AVALANCHE

    Perseverance kills our game

Absolute masterpiece when talking about progressive / psychedelic folk- rock from Europe. Dutch band Avalanche was formed in the early 70s and recorded their only album in 1979. ''Perseverance kills our game'' was released as a private edition of 500 copies, which were only distributed among friends and relatives. Despite being a home- made project (the album was recorded in just one day!) the result was stunning.Totally early 70s sounding electric folk- rock with flute, piano, bass, drums, and killer fuzz guitar. Mostly instrumental with a few vocals in English. It alternates delicate acoustic passages with devastating fuzz leads, sounding like Fairport Convention jamming with early Ash Ra Tempel. The album closes with an extended 11 minute track on which guitar player Daan Slaman starts playing leads like a madman, creating layers and layers of liquid acid- fuzz guitar. It has to be heard to be believed! First ever LP / CD reissue, done in cooperation with the original band members. Insert / booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Richard Allen.

    MCKAY

    Into you take two

In 2013 we released the celebrated ''A New Light Shines'' by McKay, an album comprised of unreleased recordings by this master of rural psychedelic sounds. ''Into You (Take Two)'' includes previously unreleased tracks recorded in 1975- 79 by the same cast of musicians who recorded ''Into You'', the legendary first McKay private album. Laid- back, rural psychedelic rock with dreamy Neil Young- Beatlesque vocal harmonies, raw fuzzed- out guitars and druggy atmosphere. Certainly the most psychedelic sounding stuff McKay ever recorded! In 1995, the now defunct OR label put out ''Into You (Take Two)'' as a limited 300 copies vinyl pressing. After many years out of print, we present a new vinyl edition of this amazing album.
