    JODI

    Pop Espontáneo

[engl] Psychedelic garage, proto-power pop and psych-funk from Paraguay, 1969-1975! “Pop Espontáneo” includes a selection of previously unreleased recordings by Joern and Dirk Wenger’s duo JODI, registered at their state-of the-art 8-track home studio in Asunción, Paraguay. Living in their own isolated world and free from any commercial pressure, Joern Wenger, a kind of Paraguayan Brian Wilson or R. Stevie Moore, created a particular, ahead of its time sound, using electric guitars, fuzz boxes, Moog, Mellotron, Clavinet, Farfisa… RIYL: BEATLES, KINKS, SHOES, JAN HAMMER, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CLEANERS FROM VENUS, ARIEL PINK, GUIDED BY VOICES, BEAT HAPPENING, TROPICALIA… In 2016, we unearthed and reissued the first Jodi album, "Pops de Vanguardia", which is probably the first DIY lo-fi garage / psychedelic album from South America, originally released in 1971. Now, we're over the moon with this incredible collection of unreleased recordings which were hidden in Joern Wenger's basement for several decades. *Superb sound taken from the original master tapes. *Insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Eduardo A. Elizalde Pietruczyk (a.k.a. Bubbling Minds). *Digital download coupon including the album plus three bonus tracks.

    MAD TIMOTHY

    A Very Snug Joiner

    [engl]
First ever release for this previously unknown late ’60s/ early ’70s acetate, rescued from a thrift store in Chicago. Damaged heavy blooz–psych in the vein of Blue Cheer, Majic Ship, Mount Rushmore, Houston Fearless, Apryl Fool, Sweet Slag, Mutzie, Aum, Screw, or a wasted teenage Canned Heat. In these digital and interconnected times, it’s very rare to find an album from the 60s–70s which hasn’t been documented or "discovered" yet. That’s the case with a mysterious demo LP titled "A Very Snug Joiner" by a band called Mad Timothy. In words of Steve Krakow (of Plastic Crimewave / Galactic Zoo): "A friend of mine found this no–jacket LP at a thrift shop, and there is ZERO information on them––no one knows anything and I’ve spoken to many collectors. Very cool sludgy Blue Cheer/Majic Ship/Mount Rushmore kind of vibe––with a few folkier tracks–––it’s all pretty charmingly primitive–– I think people would want to hear this!" Even knowing that our efforts to track down the band were fruitless, we thought that this rarity deserved to be shared with the world, so we at Out–Sider / Guerssen in collaboration with Steve’s Galactic Archive imprint, are doing a vinyl edition of the Mad Timothy demo album, hoping that any of the band members will see it and contact us.

    CASSELL, MATHEW LARKIN

    Matt The Cat

[engl] Originally from San Francisco, Matthew Larkin Cassell is a talented songwriter, vocalist and multi–instrumentalist. During the ’70s–80s, Cassell fronted a trio in the Bay Area, opening for major acts like The Tubes and Sylvester. Playing an unique fusion of funk, R&B, jazz and soft–rock, he recorded his first LP, "Pieces" in 1977, followed by a 12" titled "Matt The Cat" in 1978. Both were privately pressed and modestly distributed at the time. Fast forward to the early ’00s: Cassell’s albums are discovered by beat diggers & hip–hop producers, which led to some of his songs being sampled and included on mixes by people like Kon & Amir, Madlib and M.F. Doom. Famous labels such as Stones Throw and P–Vine reissue his music at the same time that his original albums reach outrageous prices in the collector’s market. Here’s an overdue reissue of Cassell’s second effort, "Matt The Cat", originally released in 1978. A great fusion of FUNK, R&B, SOUL–JAZZ and 70s SSW / AOR, featuring "All I’m Missing Is You", sampled by People Under The Stairs. Includes two bonus tracks from his rare "Love To Love" / "When I Go Down" 45 from 1980.

During the ’70s–80s, Cassell fronted a trio in the Bay Area, opening for major acts like The Tubes and Sylvester. Playing a particular fusion of funk, R&B, soul–jazz and 70s pop, he self–financed and released his first album, "Pieces", in 1977. Distributed only locally at the time, the album remained buried until it was discovered in the ’00s by beat makers and crate diggers which led to some of the tracks being sampled and included on mixes by people like Kon & Amir, Madlib and M.F. Doom. Reputed labels like Stones Throw and P–Vine reissued Casell’s music at the same time that the original album was sought–after by funk collectors and reached outrageous prices. Here’s a straight reissue in original artwork with master tape sound and including a lyrics insert.

    BROTHERHOOD

    Stavia

[engl] In 1972, Ohio based band THE BROTHERHOOD released their only album, "Stavia". It was a private edition of 200 copies, pressed at the legendary Rite custom plant. This rare album is a good example of US acid–rock / hippie psych with slight soul & funk influences: fantastic playing, swirling organ, powerful vocals, top guitar shredding, flute... "Stavia" has always been one of those shrouded in mystery albums, so rare that some collectors even doubted about its existence. Bootlegged in the ’90s in a butchered edition that included two songs from an unrelated band, here’s the first ever legit vinyl reissue.

    WOLFGANG

    Eliminate Hate

    [engl]
After more than 30 years hidden in a dusty storage unit, we present the previously unreleased album from one of the most enigmatic bands from the Texas psychedelic scene. An unusual blend of 60s garage-punk, Texas psychedelia (think 13th Floor Elevators or Golden Dawn), The Seeds, The Misunderstood, late era Velvet Underground, ‘70s era Stones and ‘70s pre-punk swagger. Awesome distorted steel guitar, super snotty vocals and the killer “Wolf” Mike Long (Stone Axe, Josefus) on electric guitar. Wolfgang were a young band from Pasadena, Texas, discovered by legendary Texas mogul C.L. Millburn (Sea Ell Records, The Coachmen, Knights Bridge, etc). Little is known about the band and what exactly happened to them after recording this album. But we do know that they were leaded by the great “Wolf” Mike Long (guitar player who was also part of Stone Axe and a temporary member of Josefus) and they also featured an unusual steel guitar player whose electrified sound recalls Glenn Campbell (The Misunderstood, Juicy Lucy) at his best. In 1970, Wolfgang recorded a set of songs written by Milburn, originally intended as demos to secure a deal with a bigger company. Eight songs were taped using Milburn’s trusty Sony two-track reel-to-reel, the same one he used to record childhood friend Townes Van Zandt in late ’66-’67.

    JODI

    Pops De Vanguardia

[engl] The best lo-fi garage album from South America? Ahead of its time raw & homemade Sixties garage, jangly pop and basement psych sounds from Paraguay! Originally released in 1971 as a private pressing, “Pops de Vanguardia” by JODI contains tracks mostly written and recorded in 1969 (with some dating back to 1966) by brothers Joern and Dirk Wenger at their homemade “Jodi Experimental Studio” in Paraguay. Joern and Dirk, born in Paraguay but of German origin, started playing in beat / psychedelic band The Rabbits, who released a very rare EP in 1969. After the group split, Joern and Dirk travelled to Germany, were they studied arts and received musical lessons from none other than Stockhausen. The two brothers had built their own homemade studio and they spent hours and hours recording songs and experimenting to create their own sound effects (echo, reverb, etc). They called their music “Spontaneous Pop”. “Pops De Vanguardia” was recorded at their own rudimentary studio with two tape recorders. Joern plays guitar, organ and he was the lead vocalist, while Dirk plays drums and percussions. From ultra-catchy garage-pop to killer instrumental Farfisa numbers and proto-psychedelic sounds. JODI could be seen as precursors of the indie-pop and lo-fi garage which would appear some decades later.

    SOFT SOUL TRANSITION

    SST

[engl] Breezy Sunshine-Pop / Soft-Rock / Psych-Pop from California, 1970, featuring Peter Clark a.k.a Chet DeMilo. Crystal clear recording, awesome vocal harmonies, superb musicianship, bossa & blue-eyed-soul-jazz touches,folk-rock moves… In 1969 Chet Demilo was appearing at Donkin's Inn, Marina Del Rey, where he met Arnie Marcus and Ray Hames, who together were to become part of an incredible slice of history. Donkin's became the hottest and most famous destination in Southern California for the next seven years, and Chet was the magnet that started the new singles scene in Los Angeles with Marina Del Rey as ground zero. Arnie sat in on bongos with Chet from time to time, and Ray, who was managing an apartment complex that housed 200 flight attendants, just happened to have a unit available!! Chet moved in, and he and Ray started working on songs together. Chet suggested forming a vocal group with Arnie and SST was born. For three months they practiced the intricate vocal harmonies and in early 1970 cut the album, "Soft Soul Transition". A thousand records were pressed, and an album release party was held at Donkins where SST gave their one and only performance that night! There was interest in the project at Burt Bacharach's Blue Seas Music, but it was not to be and SST faded away...until more than 20 years later when the SST album was discovered by a new generation of DJs and collectors looking for cool and groovy sounds from the 60s-70s.

Between 1975 and 1978, Liberman self-released three albums on his own Librah label which were some of the first private pressings to gain recognition amongst psych collectors in the 80s. “Solitude Within” is his second album, released in 1975. A heavy guitar psych / West Coast /acid rock classic with plenty of acid soloing drenched in fuzz-wah plus treated vocals, effects, hard-blues and even some cool mellow folk grooves and experimental excursions.

    CYKLE

    Cykle

[engl] Cykle was formed in 1968, North Carolina, when gifted musician and songwriter Jimmy Sossamon (previously in famous local band The Young Ones) heard a local group, the Glory Cykle. He was so impressed that he approached them about becoming their manager. The band -- guitarists Ralph Stevens and Jeff Hardin, bassist Grady Pope, organist Rick Wilson, and drummer/vocalist Ken Allen -- practiced at the studio Sossamon had built in his parent's garage, and by the end of the year, Sossamon took up the drummer’s seat to free up Allen as lead vocalist. Band’s name was shortened to Cykle and in early 1969 they began recording an album consisting entirely of Sossamon originals. The resultant eponymous LP was released later that year as a private pressing of 500 copies on the band’s own Label Records. But despite the 1969 release date, “Cykle” sounds straight from the 1966-67 garage-punk-psychedelic book.

    CRYSTALAUGUR

    Terranaut

[engl] Ultimate underground, lo–fi, psychedelic private press album recorded in Singapore by four US teens in 1975. Loose feel, raw sound, spacey prog /funk touches, sound effects and some proto–DIY, pre–punk vibes which bring to mind Velvet Underground or avant–garage 70s Cleveland bands like Pere Ubu but also hard–rockers ala Pink Fairies or Stray?. Crystalaugur was formed by four young ex–pats attending school in Singapore in the early 70s: Howard Kukla, Kim Bengs, Bryan Hall and Guy Rittger. For most of them this was their first serious musical experience. "Terranaut" was recorded on a 4–track machine and subsequently released by the band in a private edition of 200 copies on their own Warped Records imprint. Bootlegged many times over the years, we present the first ever legit reissue of this "lost–in–time" psychedelic artefact.

    MARTIN, PAUL

    It Happened

    [engl]
1966–67 garage anthems, jangly folk–rock and baroque pop courtesy of prolific songwriter Paul Myerberg aka Paul Martin. "There a new man in town ? Martin!" So began the liner notes from the picture sleeve of his second 45 record in 1967. Actually, Paul Martin started life as Paul Myerberg. Growing up in Manhattan, Paul was influenced by the exciting music of the day, like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. In the mid–Sixties Paul started writing and recording some impressive demos which ran the gamut from garage–punk, to jangly folk–rock, soul–pop and baroque, orchestrated pop. Many of these were cut on 4–track tape at Tower Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan with the help and guidance of the skilled jazz musician, Frank Owens. While at Tower, Paul met Herb Ostrow who released Paul’s first single on the IMPEX label out of Philadelphia. "It Happened", a terrific garage number, came out in the spring of 1966. The following year, Paul released a second 45 on his own Rodin label, "The Last Remains of our Love" (another impressive, passionate garage gem), backed with "The Fairy Princess" (a dreamy pop–psych track). Almost 30 years later Paul’s first album was released on the Distortions Records label, compiling tracks from his two sought–after singles plus studio demos and acetates.

    ROBBIE THE WEREWOLF

    At the Waleback

[engl] First ever vinyl reissue of this ’Incredible Strange Music’, private press (infamous) classic, championed by lovers of the wonderful & weird such as Jello Biafra. A time capsule which will send you back to the post–beatnik, pre–psychedelic / hippie scene from L.A. With his long red hair and matching beard, Robbie The Werewolf – a folksinger of the frantic variety with a fetish for monsters – was a striking performer with a manic stage presence, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of his original songs and uniquely reworked versions of folk standards, played on a beat–up twelve–string guitar. This inspired some of the most bizarre songs ever committed to vinyl: listen to "Count Dracula" and its proto–psychedelic, amazing echo effects or the insane DIY rocker "Rockin’ Werewolf". It was at The Wale Back in L.A one heady night in 1964, that Robbie’s solo act was captured for posterity and released as a tiny private pressing. A few years later, Robbie was a founding member of L.A psychedelic band Clear Light. But that’s another story?
