Pandemonium Shadow Show
(Sommor)[engl]Previously unreleased recordings, 1968/1970, by British quintessential psychedelic / progressive band MANDRAKE PADDLE STEAMER / MANDRAKE, culled from the band’s archive of reel tapes and acetates. Pure late 60s UK psychedelic sound with early prog moves, plenty of Hammond and fuzzed out guitar, powerful vocals...Including such lost gems as the Barrett–Floyd sounding "The World Whistles By", killer psych–rockers like "Pandemonium Shadow Show" or "Doris The Piper", the mellotron fuelled "October Country" and more! Unlike other 60s British bands who changed their music to ’psychedelic’ or ’progressive’ with the time, MPS were born "progressive" from day one. Formed in 1967 in Walthamstow (London) by a core of art school students, their members were Brian Engel, Martin Briley, Paula Riordan, Martin Hooker and Barry Nightingale (later replaced by David Potts). During their short lifespan (1967–1970), MPS supported big names like Pink Floyd, The Nice or Vanilla Fudge. They played at the Isle Of Wight Festival, had a residence at the Star Club in Germany and ran their own club night (Asgard). Signed to the Parlophone label (though the band was aiming to be part of the more progressive Harvest imprint) they released in 1969 the "Strange Walking Man" 45, recorded at Abbey Road and now widely considered a lost British psychedelic classic (check Rubbles, Perfumed Garden, etc).- Format

FLIBBERTIGIBBET
Whistling Jigs To The Moon
(Sommor)[engl] Originally released in South Africa in 1978, “Whistling Jigs To The Moon” is not only a very rare and sought-after album but also a wonderful collection of traditional and original folk tunes with a strong Celtic influence. Featuring Alison O’ Donnell and David Williams from psych-folk legends MELLOW CANDLE. In 1974, following the break-up of Mellow Candle, Alison and David arrived to South Africa. Once there, they met a couple of fellow expat musicians, Barrie Glenn and Jo Dudding, forming Flibbertigibbet in a niche folk and traditional circle of immigrant and local musicians, building up a repertoire of tunes and songs both original and traditional. They appeared at evenings held in communal houses, at folk nights and the Boksburg Folk Club. Producer David Marks offered to release their album and launch it in a series of concerts at the renowned Market Theatre. They enlisted the help of a number of fine musicians on the recording, namely classical first violinist Francesco Cignoli, jazz bassist Denis Lalouette, Nippy Cripwell on string bass, Colin Shapiro on flute and Dave Lambert on fiddle. “Whistling Jigs To The Moon” saw the light in 1978.- Format

Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna...
(Sommor)[engl] First ever reissue of this rare Swedish psychedelic hard–rock & progressive album from 1975. Powerful guitar / organ and great melodic vocals, featuring ex–LIFE member Anders Nordh on guitar. The Bättre Lyss project was born during 1973–74, when mutual friends Rolf Hammarlund (vocals, bass) and Christer Palmquist (vocals, acoustic guitars, piano) started to write songs sung in English. Soon after, the lyrics were changed to Swedish and another friend, drummer & songwriter Rolf Johansson joined in. That’s when they decided to record an album. Helped by some talented friends, including THREE electric guitar players (among them Anders Nordh of LIFE fame) and a flute / sax player plus an organist, they registered "Till Den Sträng..." on a 2–track machine at a state–of–the art studio. The result was stunning and was released as a private pressing in 1975.- Format

Live at Sunrise Studios
(Sommor)[engl] Swiss heavy–prog / kraut monster from 1976, originally released as a private, hand–made edition of 200 copies. Long instrumental / experimental tracks fuelled by Mellotron, Hammond, Minimoog, ripping distorted guitar and heavy drums. RIYL: King Crimson, Egg, Fusioon, Supersister, Jonesy, Gentle Giant, Tetragon, Siloah... Kedama came from St. Gallen in the north–eastern corner of Switzerland, near the Bodensee (only a few km from Germany and Austria). Their name was inspired by Ketama, Morocco (famous for its cannabis fields). They were amongst the first bands (probably the first) to record at Etienne Conod’s legendary Sunrise Studios, using the "kunstkopf" artificial head system. Unfortunately, the lack of experience with this new system resulted in a kinda thin sound on the album. This new reissue vastly improves the depth of the recording. "Live At Sunrise Studios" comprises four long instrumental tracks, two on each side of the LP. A digital download card is included, featuring the "Live At Sunrise Studios" album plus seven bonus tracks taken from unreleased studio sessions and the compilation "Perspectives". This is essential stuff, from the weird psych–funk of "Hwrlnzg" to the sitar–drenched "Improvisations".- Format

Night Is Burning
(Sommor)[engl] There are few bands who can claim to have built their reputation on one single, but such is the situation for Aragorn, formed in Chesire in 1978. They were one of the first acts to sign to Neat Records as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal erupted, but fate conspired to ensure that they only ever released one single, the killer ’Black Ice’ / ’Noonday’, which has definitely become something of a cult 45 among aficionados of the genre. Here it is along with 12 tracks taken from their not released at the time album from 1982/3. A must for anyone into obscure, 70s styled hard–rock and early metal.- Format

(Sommor)[engl] If you know the 1968 Eurovision song, or the TV kids cartoons tunes which Claude Lombard sang, it will be hard to believe what’s happening there...Beautiful pop songs sung in french by this belgian maverick (who worked with Luciano Berio) swirling upon wonderful 60’s abstract–expresionism orchestrations: chimes and ondes Martenots among lovely dream bass lines and organ drifting, with dreamy use of echoes, reverbs and sometimes electronics. There are incredibly beautiful songs here, and probably one of the unique example of french songs with really gorgeous, untipycal sound work, closer to some UK and US proto–psychedelic orchestration in pop world. It was by the time a complete commercial flop... A shame of course considering the quality of compositions offered here by Claude Lombard herself, who have no shame to feel if one compare the elegance of her work to an inspired and electronic version of Michel Legrand... Any serious fan of Broadcast or Stereolab will fall in love forever with this true secret gem, to say the least...And no need to mention the kaleidoscopic design of the cover, mesmerizing and perfectly illustrating the content. Masterpiece here? Hell yes! And you can forget about the cartoon tunes of your lazy childhood...- Format

(Sommor)[engl] Impossible to find Spiritual Jazz / Funk / Groove / Psych rarity from France, 1973. Rupture was born when famous French songwriter Boris Bergman (France Gall, Dalida, etc) decided to record a conceptual album about the history of Israel. He approached ace drummer and singer Sylvain Krief (Airto Fogo, Michel Fugain, Aznavour, Clark Terry, Bud Powell, etc) and soon, other musicians joined: Jean–François Jenny–Clark (Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, etc) on bass, Georges Locatelli (Total Issue) on guitar, Jean–Pierre Mas (piano, organ, guitar, vocals...) In resume, Rupture was a kind of super–group featuring some of the best musicians from the Euro jazz / progressive / fusion scene. It also included collaborations by Michel Fugain and Nicole Croisille. The album was recorded over a period of three months and the result was released as a very limited private pressing with help from the Futura label. Arranged by Sylvain Krief and Jean–Pierre Mas, "Israel Suite" included a side–long suite on side A and shorter songs on Side B. Ertlif... Plus
(Sommor)[engl]Ertlif was formed in 1970 by two ex–members of Egg & Bacon, lead guitarist Dany Andrey and bass player Teddy Riedo. They were joined by keyboard player James Mosberger (The Only Ones, The Countdowns), drummer Hanspeter ’Bölle’ Börlin (The Countdowns) and lead guitarist Martin Ruder: the cream of the Basel music scene from that time. The band name was derived from a mysterious medieval magician and alchemist. They were inspired by Pink Floyd, Yes, Procol Harum, Van der Graaf Generator and Genesis amongst others. A strong rhythm section and twin lead guitars blended with the Hammond organ created the characteristic Ertlif sound. In August 1971 they were the only Swiss band invited to the "Pop Meeting 71" in Münchenstein, Germany. Soon after, Ruder left the band. In November 1971, Richard John Rusinski, an experienced singer from England (ex–Autumn Symphony), joined the band. Riedo and Beni Hauri (the band’s roadie) had been experimenting with oscillators, noise generators, ring modulators and other devices since 1969. In early 1972 they introduced these electronic sounds into the band’s closing number "Classical Woman" so becoming pioneers of electronic music in Switzerland. They also became the first Swiss band to use a Mellotron. The band’s instrumental virtuosity established them as one of the country’s top acts and a phenomenal live band and they were one of only a few Swiss groups to be offered a recording contract.- Format

S to S
(Sommor)[engl]Obscure hard–rock / proto–metal beast from Belgium, originally released in 1978 as a private edition of 300 copies. Dangerous, aggressive sound with wall of fuzz guitars and manic speed drumming. Highly recommended to anyone into "Raw Power" era Stooges, "Back in the USA" era MC5, Pink Fairies, early Motörhead, Hawkwind, Acid Archives US obscurities like White Boy & The Average Rat Band, early NWOBHM bands and compilations like "Bonehead Crunchers". The S to S album is one of those obscurities that have remained unknown to collectors of hardrock for many years. We present the first ever reissue with the band’s story told for the first time. S to S emerged out of the ashes of local band Etna, featuring the Cannella brothers: Fulvio on lead guitar and Mirco on bass along with George Abry on drums. After the demise of Etna, the Cannella brothers decided to form a power–trio: S to S was born. Upon meeting producer Michel Dickenscheid, they were offered a deal: the band would help Michel to build a new recording studio in exchange of free studio time with the intention of recording their first album, which would be produced by Michel. So they built a state–of–the art studio with their own hands and soon after the recording of the S to S album started. Mirco switched from bass to guitar so they recruited a new bass player, Picci Salvatore, who abandoned the band just after the recording sessions.- Format

Floret Silva
(Sommor)[engl]Sounding at times like Vashti Bunyan fronting Sunforest, "Floret Silva" is a haunting mix of medieval music and progressive / psych / folk with Latin lyrics straight from the Carmina Burana book. The "Floret Silva" project was born when minimalist composer Kay Hoffman went to Italy in the mid- 70s. Once there, she met with welsh soprano Jacqueline Darby, who had recently been working with the Italian avant- prog band Pierrot Lunaire. Jaqueline was working on new compositions with RCA producer Vincento Miccocci in Rome and she asked Kay if she was interested in getting involved in a new project. Kay agreed and Gaio Chiochio and Arturo Stalteri of Pierrot Lunaire also joined them on this new venture. Gaio travelled from Rome to play the guitar and other friends of Jacqueline also offered their collaboration. In a short time, Kay wrote all the material, inspired by the Carmina Burana book and her love of Medieval and Renaissance music. Kay also contributed vocals, clavinet and piano and together with Jacqueline Darby - on haunting vocals - plus an impressive cast of jazz/rock/progressive musicians, they recorded "Floret Silva" during 1977- 78, under the guidance of Vicento Micocci. Sadly, RCA backed off and the album went unreleased until a copy of the masters found their way to Japan, where the great Belle Antique label put out the first vinyl edition of "Floret Silva" in 1985.- Format

Parable
(Sommor)[engl] Formed in Glasgow in the early 70s, White Light were not an ordinary Xian rock band: influenced by the explosive sound of The Who, the hard blues of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and even Black Sabbath, their live performances across the country featured heavy rock sounds, feedback howling round, phased lighting effects and commitment to the real enjoyment of Rock Music. They weren’t formed to play in churches – but to take The Message to the rock generation in loud clubs, halls and big rock venues. In 1972, they were finalists in a national rock competition organized by Melody Maker magazine. This event encouraged the band to enter the studio for the recording of their first album. “Parable” was released as a private pressing in 1974. Housed in a mysterious looking cover, the music is Xian hard psych straight from the garage with lot of raw fuzz guitar and Vox Continental organ. Combining hard-rock with heavy blues and dreamy moments, it features the monster sidelong track “Prodigal”, which has to be heard to be believed. First ever reissue of this ultra-obscure private pressing (as featured in the last Hans Pokora’s “7001 Record Collector Dreams” book with the maximum scale rarity). Proyecto A + Proyecto B
(Sommor)[engl]Cosmic, acid-psych-soul-funk-prog extravaganza from Spain, 1971. Proyecto A was the brainchild of the great Frank Dubé from Barcelona. What can we say about him? A truly fascinating character: a pioneer of rock & roll and twist in Spain during the late 50s and early 60s, an accomplished accordion player, a showman, comedian, a Psychoaesthetics master…But he should also be considered as one of the first psychedelic pioneers in Spain due to his groundbreaking work on the Proyecto A album. Frank started working on Proyecto A in 1969. Impressed by the moon landing, he wanted to create a concept album about the Solar System planets using tone scales and groove music so people could dance to it at clubs. He recruited some of the best studio musicians around and the result was delirious concept album fuelled by fuzz-wah guitars, powerful, crazy vocals, electronic & bizarre effects, Hammond organ, soulish horns, funky drums… Due to the limitations of recording studios in Spain at the time, Frank had to create his own effects and sound effects for the album. He used a primitive Binson Echo unit, he recorded vocals through guitar amps, he used guitar effects on the keyboards, recorded with a portable microphone the sound of the beach, waves and TV sounds… Proyecto A was released in 1971 housed in an amazing gatefold sleeve depicting all the musicians wearing strange & bizarre psychedelic outfits.- Format

Bloody Turkey Sandwiches
(Sommor)[engl] Bloody Turkey Sandwiches'''' is another ultra- rarity by British psychedelic folk band Pig Rider: only six copies were originally privately pressed by custom label Deroy in 1974. The music here is much in the same vein as their famous ''''Heterophonies'''' album but even more crazed. Some of the tracks bring to mind the more experimental side of Olivia Tremor Control / Black Swan Network or even They Might Be giants ?but only 20 years before those bands existed! Electric acid folk with stoned homemade atmosphere, lo- fi sound, bizarre & funny lyrics, effects, backward bits, surreal humour, psychedelic skiffle and old- timey music hall parodies, brilliant folk- rock- pop and titles like ''''Interdrive Overstella'''', ''''Be Glad For The Song Has An Ending'''', ''''Pus In Our Time'''' and ''''Have you seen your neighbour in the bath''''. Heterophonies
(Sommor)[engl]Although nearly 60 people have played in Pig Rider or its various offshoots over the years, there have only been two ever- present members, Colin Kitchener and John Mayes, who founded the band at Sevenoaks School in Kent, England in the late 60s. They met when they were 12, and not long after began haunting the music rooms at the school to hammer out current three- chord pop songs on pianos. After a number of other names (including D Jabferg Flossyakkit and Bob Scratch and his Country and South Eastern Spring Blues Band) they settled on 'The Pig Rider Robinson Heterophony' to perform under. After an attempt to build a seven- foot robot bassist called Peregrine Robinson to front the band failed the name was finally abbreviated to its current form. Pig Rider's music has been described as ''joke folk / mock rock'' and although they claim that their minds were only altered by lot of beer drinking, there's a real psychedelic element to it. Also, they should be regarded as pioneers of the DIY movement which would came a few years later. They recorded at home with rudimentary equipment, they used handmade modified instruments (''orgasmatron'', ''banjelele'', ''torture machine'', ''aquaphone'', ''swanee bicycle pump''?) and they self- released a series of acetate only albums housed in primitive, handmade sleeves.- Format

BAZAR
Drabantbyrock
(Sommor)[engl] Kick- ass psychedelic / progressive hard- rock from Norway! Bazar was one of the most hard- working progressive bands from Scandinavia. This is their killer second album from 1974. Wah- wah fuelled guitar action, organ, flute, melodic vocals and radical lyrics. ''Drabantbyrock'' combines heavy numbers, West Coast guitar jams and dreamy moments, featuring the superb guitar playing of Bent Patey. Highly recommended for those into Swedish hard- rock bands such as November.- Format
