    BEATSTALKERS, THE

    Scotlands No.1 Beat Group

    [engl]
Complete recordings, 1963–69, by this legendary band from Glasgow. Fabulous mod–beat, wild R&B and pop–psych, including all their 45 sides for Decca and CBS plus early demos. Formed in Glasgow in 1962 during the early beat boom by Alan Mair and Eddie Campbell, their line–up also included Davie Lennox, Tudge’ Williamson (replaced by Jeff Allen) and Ronnie Smith. Playing an authentic brand of rhythm ’n’ blues and soul covers, they soon took the city by storm and were famous for their riotous shows, attracting hordes of screaming girls and young fans. No wonder they were dubbed "the Scottish Beatles" by the press. Between 1965 and 1969, The Beatstalkers would go on to release a total of seven singles. All these sides are featured here. Including mod / freakbeat classics like ’Base Line’, "’Ev’rybody’s Talkin’ ’Bout My Baby’, ’You’d Better Get A Better Hold On’, plus several tracks penned by a young David Bowie ("Silver Tree Top School For Boys", "Everything Is You", "When I’m Five"), a killer psych cover of The Action’s "Little Boy" and more. The Beatstalkers were a strong live attraction in the clubs and ballrooms around Great Britain (they also held a residence at the Marquee) and were highly praised by their contemporaries, including The Who, with whom they shared a ’Ready Steady Go’ television appearance.

    LUCIFER WAS

    Underground And Beyond

[engl] Killer hard psych–prog from Norway! "Underground And Beyond" was the debut album by cult proto–metal band LUCIFER WAS, containing songs written in 1971–72 but not recorded until 1997. Fully 70s analogue & powerful sound with devastating distorted lead guitar & flute. Imagine a cross between JETHRO TULL, BLACK SABBATH and ATOMIC ROOSTER! Remastered sound, colour insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It’s Psychedelic Baby) plus rare photos. Established in 1970 in Oslo, Lucifer Was were a powerful psychedelic hard–rock / hard–prog band that lasted until 1975. During those years, they gigged locally and played at some big festivals but they never got the chance to register any recording. The band hibernated until 1996 when they reunited again for a live concert. The chemistry was still there so they entered a recording studio and recorded in just 18 hours their first ever album, "Underground and Beyond", featuring songs written in 1971–72. Their line–up included two flute players plus bass, drums and the killer lead guitar of Thore Engen. Originally released in 1997 as a picture disc LP, here’s the first ever standard LP reissue.

    SYNCHRO RHYTHMIC ECLECTIC LANGUAGE

    Lambi

[engl] Impressive jazz–rock–fusion with progressive, funk, afro–caribbean and Zeuhl elements courtesy of multi–cultural French band SYNCHRO, featuring an impressive cast of French, African, Afroamerican, Antillean and Martiniquens musicians: drummer Steve McCall (AIR, CECIL TAYLOR), sax player Jo Maka (INTERCOMMUNAL FREE DANCE MUSIC ORCHESTRA), violinist Jean–Yves Rigaud (ZAO), electric guitar player Gerard Curbillon (SPEED LIMIT), pianist Georges–Edouard Nouel (NOEL Mc GHIE & SPACE SPIES), bass player Louis Xavier (LADJA). Synchro was iniatilly created by legendary drummer Eddy Gaumont but after his unexpected death, Louis Xavier took the control. Soon after, they recorded a couple of albums for French label Moshé–Naïm, created by the famous patron of the arts of the same name. "Lambi" was released in 1972 housed in a beautiful gatefold cover, featuring liner notes by jazz critic Maurice Cullaz and BYG’s Pierre Lattés. Here, you’ll find Zeuhl grooves a la Magma–ZAO–Soft Machinhe ("Rigibo"), jazz–funk–breaks galore ("ABCD"), afro–latin–jazz ("Pasto", "Rete"); library jazz funk ("El Gason") and outstanding jazz–rock–prog. Here’s the first ever vinyl reissue, expanded to a double album including some essential bonus tracks taken from the recording sessions.

    Charge

[engl] First ever legit vinyl reissue of this impossible to find private psychedelic hard-rock album from 1973. Remastered sound, colour insert with rare photos and liner notes by David Wells. Includes digital download coupon. Charge were a British power-trio born from the ashes of local South Coast heavy-blues bands Baby Bertha and Sweet Poison. Comprised of Dave Ellis (guitar), Pete Gibbons (drums) and Ian Mclaughlin (bass), they played heavy rock influenced by Hendrix, Cream, Free, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, etc. In 1973 they cut a demo album at SRT studios of which 99 copies in blank covers were pressed and later distributed between family & friends, with a few of them also shipped to record companies in what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt at earning a recording contract. The music is raw hard-rock with unrestrained guitar, Lemmy-esque vocals and psych / heavy progressive touches. Side B contains the epic anti-war suite “Child Of Nations”.

    Argus

[engl] Argus were an obscure British outfit with connections to Rare Amber and Julian’s Treatment. Their sound was hard–hitting bluesy hard–rock, similar to Hackensack or Killing Floor. In 1973, they recorded a five–track demo with the intention of securing a record deal which sadly never arrived. It is included here along with a few live tracks from post–Argus underground psych–prog outfit Anaconda. First time on vinyl.

    THREE-HEADED DOG

    Hound Of Hades

[engl] A mysterious three–piece from Birmingham, Three–Headed Dog played underground hard–rock, clearly influenced by early Judas Priest and Wishbone Ash. Before disappearing in the mist of time, they left behind an ultra rare demo tape – recorded in 1973 – which included a couple of cover versions from Wild Turkey and Edgar Broughton Band along with self–penned material. This demo was handled to Norman Hood, manager of other Brum bands such as Necromandus and Flying Hat Band, who was involved in promoting Three–Headed Dog at the time. · First time on vinyl.

[engl] Third album, originally released in 1972, by Argentinean power–trio VOX DEI. Solid hard–rock / heavy–blues with cool folky/acoustic touches, killer guitar leads and vocals. Master tape sound and poster. Formed in Buenos Aires in 1967, Vox Dei were one of the leading 70s rock band from Argentine. Originally born as a quartet, they soon mutated into a wild power–trio (Ricardo Soulé on guitar, Willy Quiroga on bass and Rubén Basoalto on drums). MANDRAKE PADDLE STEAMER

    Pandemonium Shadow Show

    [engl]
Previously unreleased recordings, 1968/1970, by British quintessential psychedelic / progressive band MANDRAKE PADDLE STEAMER / MANDRAKE, culled from the band’s archive of reel tapes and acetates. Pure late 60s UK psychedelic sound with early prog moves, plenty of Hammond and fuzzed out guitar, powerful vocals...Including such lost gems as the Barrett–Floyd sounding "The World Whistles By", killer psych–rockers like "Pandemonium Shadow Show" or "Doris The Piper", the mellotron fuelled "October Country" and more! Unlike other 60s British bands who changed their music to ’psychedelic’ or ’progressive’ with the time, MPS were born "progressive" from day one. Formed in 1967 in Walthamstow (London) by a core of art school students, their members were Brian Engel, Martin Briley, Paula Riordan, Martin Hooker and Barry Nightingale (later replaced by David Potts). During their short lifespan (1967–1970), MPS supported big names like Pink Floyd, The Nice or Vanilla Fudge. They played at the Isle Of Wight Festival, had a residence at the Star Club in Germany and ran their own club night (Asgard). Signed to the Parlophone label (though the band was aiming to be part of the more progressive Harvest imprint) they released in 1969 the "Strange Walking Man" 45, recorded at Abbey Road and now widely considered a lost British psychedelic classic (check Rubbles, Perfumed Garden, etc).

    FLIBBERTIGIBBET

    Whistling Jigs To The Moon

[engl] Originally released in South Africa in 1978, “Whistling Jigs To The Moon” is not only a very rare and sought-after album but also a wonderful collection of traditional and original folk tunes with a strong Celtic influence. Featuring Alison O’ Donnell and David Williams from psych-folk legends MELLOW CANDLE. In 1974, following the break-up of Mellow Candle, Alison and David arrived to South Africa. Once there, they met a couple of fellow expat musicians, Barrie Glenn and Jo Dudding, forming Flibbertigibbet in a niche folk and traditional circle of immigrant and local musicians, building up a repertoire of tunes and songs both original and traditional. They appeared at evenings held in communal houses, at folk nights and the Boksburg Folk Club. Producer David Marks offered to release their album and launch it in a series of concerts at the renowned Market Theatre. They enlisted the help of a number of fine musicians on the recording, namely classical first violinist Francesco Cignoli, jazz bassist Denis Lalouette, Nippy Cripwell on string bass, Colin Shapiro on flute and Dave Lambert on fiddle. “Whistling Jigs To The Moon” saw the light in 1978.

    BÄTTRE LYSS

Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna...

[engl] First ever reissue of this rare Swedish psychedelic hard–rock & progressive album from 1975. Powerful guitar / organ and great melodic vocals, featuring ex–LIFE member Anders Nordh on guitar. The Bättre Lyss project was born during 1973–74, when mutual friends Rolf Hammarlund (vocals, bass) and Christer Palmquist (vocals, acoustic guitars, piano) started to write songs sung in English. Soon after, the lyrics were changed to Swedish and another friend, drummer & songwriter Rolf Johansson joined in. That’s when they decided to record an album. Helped by some talented friends, including THREE electric guitar players (among them Anders Nordh of LIFE fame) and a flute / sax player plus an organist, they registered "Till Den Sträng..." on a 2–track machine at a state–of–the art studio. The result was stunning and was released as a private pressing in 1975.

    KEDAMA

    Live at Sunrise Studios

[engl] Swiss heavy–prog / kraut monster from 1976, originally released as a private, hand–made edition of 200 copies. Long instrumental / experimental tracks fuelled by Mellotron, Hammond, Minimoog, ripping distorted guitar and heavy drums. RIYL: King Crimson, Egg, Fusioon, Supersister, Jonesy, Gentle Giant, Tetragon, Siloah... Kedama came from St. Gallen in the north–eastern corner of Switzerland, near the Bodensee (only a few km from Germany and Austria). Their name was inspired by Ketama, Morocco (famous for its cannabis fields). They were amongst the first bands (probably the first) to record at Etienne Conod’s legendary Sunrise Studios, using the "kunstkopf" artificial head system. Unfortunately, the lack of experience with this new system resulted in a kinda thin sound on the album. This new reissue vastly improves the depth of the recording. "Live At Sunrise Studios" comprises four long instrumental tracks, two on each side of the LP. A digital download card is included, featuring the "Live At Sunrise Studios" album plus seven bonus tracks taken from unreleased studio sessions and the compilation "Perspectives". This is essential stuff, from the weird psych–funk of "Hwrlnzg" to the sitar–drenched "Improvisations".

    ARAGORN

    Night Is Burning

[engl] There are few bands who can claim to have built their reputation on one single, but such is the situation for Aragorn, formed in Chesire in 1978. They were one of the first acts to sign to Neat Records as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal erupted, but fate conspired to ensure that they only ever released one single, the killer ’Black Ice’ / ’Noonday’, which has definitely become something of a cult 45 among aficionados of the genre. Here it is along with 12 tracks taken from their not released at the time album from 1982/3. A must for anyone into obscure, 70s styled hard–rock and early metal.

    LOMBARD, CLAUDE

    Chante

[engl] If you know the 1968 Eurovision song, or the TV kids cartoons tunes which Claude Lombard sang, it will be hard to believe what’s happening there...Beautiful pop songs sung in french by this belgian maverick (who worked with Luciano Berio) swirling upon wonderful 60’s abstract–expresionism orchestrations: chimes and ondes Martenots among lovely dream bass lines and organ drifting, with dreamy use of echoes, reverbs and sometimes electronics. There are incredibly beautiful songs here, and probably one of the unique example of french songs with really gorgeous, untipycal sound work, closer to some UK and US proto–psychedelic orchestration in pop world. It was by the time a complete commercial flop... A shame of course considering the quality of compositions offered here by Claude Lombard herself, who have no shame to feel if one compare the elegance of her work to an inspired and electronic version of Michel Legrand... Any serious fan of Broadcast or Stereolab will fall in love forever with this true secret gem, to say the least...And no need to mention the kaleidoscopic design of the cover, mesmerizing and perfectly illustrating the content. Masterpiece here? Hell yes! And you can forget about the cartoon tunes of your lazy childhood...

    ERTLIF

    Ertlif... Plus

    [engl]
Ertlif was formed in 1970 by two ex–members of Egg & Bacon, lead guitarist Dany Andrey and bass player Teddy Riedo. They were joined by keyboard player James Mosberger (The Only Ones, The Countdowns), drummer Hanspeter ’Bölle’ Börlin (The Countdowns) and lead guitarist Martin Ruder: the cream of the Basel music scene from that time. The band name was derived from a mysterious medieval magician and alchemist. They were inspired by Pink Floyd, Yes, Procol Harum, Van der Graaf Generator and Genesis amongst others. A strong rhythm section and twin lead guitars blended with the Hammond organ created the characteristic Ertlif sound. In August 1971 they were the only Swiss band invited to the "Pop Meeting 71" in Münchenstein, Germany. Soon after, Ruder left the band. In November 1971, Richard John Rusinski, an experienced singer from England (ex–Autumn Symphony), joined the band. Riedo and Beni Hauri (the band’s roadie) had been experimenting with oscillators, noise generators, ring modulators and other devices since 1969. In early 1972 they introduced these electronic sounds into the band’s closing number "Classical Woman" so becoming pioneers of electronic music in Switzerland. They also became the first Swiss band to use a Mellotron. The band’s instrumental virtuosity established them as one of the country’s top acts and a phenomenal live band and they were one of only a few Swiss groups to be offered a recording contract.

    S TO S

    S to S

    [engl]
Obscure hard–rock / proto–metal beast from Belgium, originally released in 1978 as a private edition of 300 copies. Dangerous, aggressive sound with wall of fuzz guitars and manic speed drumming. Highly recommended to anyone into "Raw Power" era Stooges, "Back in the USA" era MC5, Pink Fairies, early Motörhead, Hawkwind, Acid Archives US obscurities like White Boy & The Average Rat Band, early NWOBHM bands and compilations like "Bonehead Crunchers". The S to S album is one of those obscurities that have remained unknown to collectors of hardrock for many years. We present the first ever reissue with the band’s story told for the first time. S to S emerged out of the ashes of local band Etna, featuring the Cannella brothers: Fulvio on lead guitar and Mirco on bass along with George Abry on drums. After the demise of Etna, the Cannella brothers decided to form a power–trio: S to S was born. Upon meeting producer Michel Dickenscheid, they were offered a deal: the band would help Michel to build a new recording studio in exchange of free studio time with the intention of recording their first album, which would be produced by Michel. So they built a state–of–the art studio with their own hands and soon after the recording of the S to S album started. Mirco switched from bass to guitar so they recruited a new bass player, Picci Salvatore, who abandoned the band just after the recording sessions.
