    ELEKTRO HAFIZ

    Elektro Hafiz

    [engl]
Elektro Hafiz is a musician, born and raised in Istanbul, who has recently moved to Cologne, Germany. Already well known in Turkey, he can look back on 20 years as a professional musician. With his former band ‘Fairuz Derin Bulut’ he created and released three albums, which represent a milestone in the Anatolian psychedelic rock music of the 2nd generation in Turkey. Elektro Hafiz has shown and proven openness to various and sometimes contradicting music styles by mixing eastern instruments like the electric saz, darbuka and finger cymbals with different genres. He loves to play with contrasts and create new compositions from there. This open and experimental approach is still his trademark, as well as his charming provocative style that is complemented by a healthy dose of humour. His diverse compositions are heavily influenced by his Anatolian roots, which are reflected in his instrument of choice, the electric saz, in most of his pieces. A further ingenious characteristic of him is using the electric guitar as a rock instrument while at the same time applying the Anatolian harmony system (scale). “Elektro Hafiz", his first solo album, showcases a more open and progressive format to his main base influence - the anatolian psychedelic music. On this album he played a lot of different instruments by himself and also invited artists from different countries such as Kenya, France, Turkey, Switzerland, Austria and Germany to contribute for this production.

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Nice Yillara Gülüm

[engl] Third album by Turkish psychedelic singer Edip Akbayram, originally released in 1982. This later 3rd album really ramps up the silly synthesizers. You'll hear whooshy 80s Rolands, vocals run through a harmonizer, and tons of totally tubular bass popping, and it all makes it darned easy to hear just where the western intros and breaks stop. Ever wish Knight Rider's Kitt could drive to Istanbul? Take a ride on cheesy synthesizers with Edip at the wheel!

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Nedir Ne Degildir?

[engl] As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi- eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mo?ollar and Bari? Manço's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo- covered voice. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). Vinyl comes with exact reproduction of the original gatefold pop- up sleeve.

    SHAHRAM

    Shahram

[engl] You know how record nerds are. They?ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn. As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would?ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran. Not that he wasn?t afraid to put someone elses idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks? chords from ?You Really Got Me?. Its more that Shahrams rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from. Heres a well- deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl.

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Singles Overview 1974-1977

[engl] B- sides from hard to find 45s that never made onto albums during singer Edip Akbayram's psychedelic period with the awesome Dostlar as backing band. A tiny guy with a great big, easy, open voice, Akbayram glues together disparate arrangements that put ridiculous analog synthesizers up next to mystic poetry that's hundreds of years old. Anatolian melodies are enveloped by western touches, like breakdowns for cosmic whispering, slammin' organ, or wild phasing effects on folk instruments that were never meant to support them. VAMPIRES, THE

    Vampires Underground

[engl] Where does a band of Indian guys in East South Africa even play, and how on earth would they end up with fuzzy guitar riffs, wah- wah and funky drums? Riddles abound when you discover a platter like this one. Durban, famous for its beaches and also for beach signs that marked off areas for white people, had a very unique dance band scene in 1971. The Vampires are a strange footnote in a strange world, and they slosh through each song like they're having the time of their lives. The mostly instrumental band covers everything from a soundtrack that prefigures the drama of Ennio Morricone fuzz, to middle of the road Nashville country, to Zeppelin, with flute, organ and fuzz guitar high in the mix.

    AKKOR, KAMURAN

    Kamuran Akkor

[engl] Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid- 1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi- rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due? So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real- life Stevie Nicks next- door. Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971- 75. Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high- profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like ''Turkish Freakout Vol. 2'' or ''Istanbul 70'', but there's way more to discover, and now you can.

    Sedayeh Del

[engl] Khosh Amadid, friends, to this 4th volume in a series of compilations highlighting fiercely rare 45s from Tehrans pre- revolutionary golden age. Vivacious ladies with sassy Dorothy Hamill haircuts and skin- bearing pantsuits were once plastered across Tehrans newsstands. Those gorgeous sirens and their hunky male counterparts made all the teens sway to hand drums that boinked in 6/8 time. Plush brass & string arrangements took their cues from Latin grooves, psychedelic guitars, ritzy soundtracks, and sugary pop from the West. Within months of the 1979 Islamic revolution, pop music was labeled a symbol of the previous regime and became illegal overnight. In those same months, it also became illegal for women to be in public without conforming to the hijab dress code. By hook and crook, these little round records survived, and they attest to a time when Tehrans homegrown and exiled populations would have been united in an easygoing love for funk bass & buzzing synthesizers. Hear the tunes that rivaled the hits of Googoosh & Kourosh by singers who only recorded a few precious singles, but don?t think for a minute that Tehrans nightingales have run out of surprises for your ears. The discoveries are just beginning.

    ALPAY

    Yekte

[engl] In Turkey, psychedelia wasn?t just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed- out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid- 60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah- ed out guitar solos. If you're ready to go beyond Baris & Erkin, this is the perfect spot. [engl] Ohhh, those rolling 6/8 time signatures, wah- ed out guitars, throbbing bass lines & shimmery disco strings. After two sets of singles from the jet- setting 1970s Tehran pop scene, Pharaway Sounds brings you a third round- up of tunes from just before the Iranian revolution. You'll find rockers from bands like the Rebels, making their way through the western sounds of the late 70s. But maybe more important, hear the voices of the girls, sweet & tough alike, who all ran out & got their hair cut in a foxy Hamill camel just like trend- setter Googoosh. A set that veers from gypsy fiddles to crime jazz piano to Abba knock- offs, and it's all from the teen idols of stage & screen who once filled glossy magazines to promote their latest musical adventures. BUNALIM

    Bunalim

[engl] Turkish band Bunalim (Turkish for ''Depression'') is a true legend: they were the absolute wildest and crudest band from the Anatolian Rock scene. Under the wing of Cem Karaça, who was their manager and producer, they released a few singles which are all collected here. Fierce Turkish folk flavoured psychedelic- fuzz rock circa 1970- 72. Remastered sound, insert with liner notes and pictures. ''Even more brain- blasted than Erkin Koray's deliberately underground band that lived in a house together (Yeralti Dörtlüsü), these dirty nude guys were in all ways hairy, and they stacked their Selmer amplifiers just as high as any rock band you could name. Drink up the John Bonham drum fills, evil Sabbath guitar, and sickly brooding organ.'' (Angela Sawyer, Weirdo Records, USA)

    Zendooni

[engl] Zendooni celebrates a time when Pop artists in Iran ruled the country. During the 70s, before the Revolution, Occidental and Middle East mannerisms collided and the result was a new kind of Iranian Pop which incorpotated different genres and arrangements to its Persian roots. Touches of Funk, Jazz, Latin, Bossa, Progressive- Psychedelic sounds and Morricone / Blaxploitation styled soundtracks can be heard on this collection, culled from miraculously survived vinyls and cassettes. A surreal voyage back to the Golden Age of Persian Pop. A vibrant time when female singers like Nooshafarin, Azita, Pouran or Ramesh appeared in colourful teen mags dressed in full hippie fashion. We are proud to present for the first time to Western ears amazing examples of Persian psych- prog like ''Safar'' by Hassan Shamaizadeh and ''Vi Bafa'' by Kambiz ; Persian funk by Azita, Nooshafarin, Emad Raam, Pooneh ; Bollywood styled sounds by Ahmad Wali & Hangama and much more.

    DERDIYOKLAR IKILISI

    Çoban Mamos

[engl] Turkish Bar or Bengi folk dancing requires approximately 100 people to do properly, and it helps if a lot of them are eating wedding cake. You put your arms around the shoulders of the people on either side of you, and then stomp around in a circle, facing in and kicking the air, until everybody is exhausted and happy. Far away from any folklore festivals, Derdiyoklar hand- built the soundtrack to this dancing as it was drunkenly executed by luckless German- Turkish immigrants in the fashion- insensitive 80s. And though the band had only two members, they decided electric saz, synthesized drums, cimbalom, and sheep sound effects were all needed to get the job done. Who could argue? This tinkly and psychoactive album, full of uniquely odd overdubs and buzzy, flanged- out guitar solos, can now be yours. First time ever reissue. Sound taken from mastertapes, insert with liner notes, 180gr vinyl.

    KARACA, CEM

    Apaslar, Kardaslar, Mogollar

[engl] Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbuls music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poets broiling righteousness and also his listeners? common ground with their elders in Turkeys history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karacas own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then- current project Dervisan. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kellys flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric baglama, and youre ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem.

    KARACA, CEM

    Nem kaldi?

[engl] Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul's leftist counterculture with stompin' prog keyboards. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history. 1975's 'Nem Kaldi' gathers more 60s- 70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real- life assassins multiply, yet the double- time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.

    KIZILOK, FIKRET

    Anadolu'yum

[engl] What if Bob Dylan was also a dentist, and then he hired Keith Emerson to play keyboards on songs he wrote for a play? It happened in Istanbul, friends. Turkish folk singer Fikret Kizilok started out balancing his interest in the toothy arts with playing rhythm guitar in a Beatles knock- off band. He quickly gave both up for more serious acoustic songwriting, unveiling aged melodies and florid picking that evoked the long history of the hilly Turkish countryside. In the early 70s, while trying to recover from a period of mourning, Kizilok also hired an electric & very splashy backing band, and started throwing in prog flute and ritzy Doorsish organ rips. This collection of singles from 1971- 75 lets you taste each of Kiziloks and Anatolias many moods.

    KORAY, ERKIN

    Elektronik Türküler

[engl] Technically his 2nd lp after a collection of singles, this benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbuls musicians & pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim & Baris Mancos Kurtalan Ekspres) & an electrified baglama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double- reed melodies, bulging riffs, & hammer- ons that go on for- friggin- ever. Savagery begins at home people, so make sure you get a physical copy of the best record by the Turkish Hendrix into your house. Gatefold cover, 180g vinyl, insert with linernotes.

    MEHRPOUYA

    Soul Raga - Anthology

[engl] Collected from several 45s & his one lp issued between 1968- 76, please enjoy Pharaway Sounds' introduction to Iranian sitarist, the debonair Abbas Mehrpouya (1927- 1993). Get your ears on the cuts that have been making DJs drool across Europe and the States. And while you're at it, introduce yourself to the aching, tear- filled flute & organ dirges of Mehrpouya's earlier years. The most complete overview of his career ever released, so don't miss one sumptuous instant. Triple LP and Double CD sets, both including linernotes.

    PALMEIRA

    Palmeira

[engl] Can you imagine a Dutch band playing top- notch 60s- 70s sounding Brazilian music? Originally released as a private pressing in 1983, Palmeiras only album will please any lover of bossa, jazzy and latin- fusion sounds. Beautiful femme vocals, superb musicianship featuring the awesome lead electric guitar of Jeanette van der Pligt, self- penned songs and choice covers of Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto and Rita Lee among others. Palmeira was a Brazilian styled band formed by Angelo Noce Santoro (ex- Cosmic Dealer) along with some Dutch, North American and Brazilian musicians. The group existed from 1979 till 1985, playing lots of gigs at jazz and night clubs in Holland. In 1983 they released their only album in a private edition of 500 copies on Angelos ANS label. A cult item for fans of Bossa- Jazz, it was first reissued as a limited edition in Japan, now long out of print. Heres a new reissue featuring no less than six bonus tracks on our CD edition. These bonus (one more over the previous Japanese CD release) come from Angelos tape archive and all of them were recorded the same year as the album, including some great covers of giants like Edu Lobo and Jorge Ben among others.

    RAMESH

    Ramesh

[engl] In 1970s Tehran, the classically- trained Ramesh played the serious, quiet marquess against Googooshs langorous pop princess. Both singers made the papers every time they changed their haircuts & appeared on tv frequently. However, while Googoosh now runs a cosmetics company in Los Angeles, they say Ramesh was killed in the political turmoil of the late 70s because she was a lesbian. Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that she was a funky queen whose rich voice sits like a fat mink coat, twirling its melancholy way around long- necked lutes, backed by flurries of frame & goblet drums. And the sleazy, Western brass, strings & synths are here too, slathered across rare singles for your shameless dancing pleasure. Welcome to the unpredictable world of pre- revolutionary Iranian pop music.

    SANTORO, ANGELO NOCE

    For you

[engl] First ever LP/CD reissue of this private Dutch album from 1979: a latin- funk- psych- prog trip featuring groovy jazzy flute, superb acoustic / electric guitars, funky rhythm section, exotic percussion and some cool Oriental / Thai / Brazilian vibes. Angelo Noce Santoro is a guitar player with over forty- five years of musical career. A founding member of legendary psych- prog band Cosmic Dealer, Angelo has recorded and released albums under his own name and hes also behind projects like Palmeira (the first Dutch band playing Brazilian music), Santoro Brothers and Oriental Guitars among many others. His unique guitar playing, which incorporates surf, psychedelic, jazz and Oriental influences, has received praising from connoisseurs of obscure instrumental sounds such as Jello Biafra, who got in touch with Angelo after discovering one of his solo albums in a second- hand shop in the 80s. For You? was Angelos first solo effort, released as a private pressing in 1979 on ANS, his own label. Angelo played bass, acoustic & electric guitars, flute and percussion. He was joined by ace flute player Steven Bishop, drummer Herman Muller and Lodewijk Hulsman on acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks were written by Angelo prior to 1979, with some of them dating back to the early 70s when he was with Cosmic Dealer.
