    ACTION

    Rolled Gold

[engl] The legendary 1967–68 recordings by UK mod band THE ACTION, registered when they were in transition from mod–beat to full–blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming MIGHTY BABY. Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, "Rolled Gold" is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action’s classic line–up of Reg King, Alan ’Bam’ King, Michael Evans and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute / organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the West Coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane. Always the stuff of legend, The "Rolled Gold" tapes were shelved at the time, not released until 1997 when the Dig The Fuzz label discovered them and did a limited LP/CD run. Out of print on vinyl for many years, we present a new vinyl edition. If you dig the psychedelic era of SMALL FACES, PRETTY THINGS, THE WHO, plus THE CREATION, NAZZ, TOMORROW, BLOSSOM TOES, THE END or TRAFFIC...look no further.

    PYRAMID

    Pyramid

[engl] 33 minutes of pure, unadulterated, psychedelic Krautrock courtesy of PYRAMID: an obscure studio project produced by Toby Robinson aka The Mad Twiddler. These sessions were recorded circa 1975–76 in Cologne for the underground Pyramid label, which was operated by Toby and his friend Robin Page (the Fluxus artist). During that time, Toby worked as engineer and assistan at varios studios in Cologne, including the famous Dieter Dierks studios, where most of the albums from the Ohr/Pilz/Cosmic Courier catalogue were registered. Having access to the studios during dead hours, Toby recorded lot of sessions just for fun without any commercial interest, featuring friends and musicians who frequented the studios and the underground art/music scene of Cologne. Some of these sessions were later relesed as hand–made vinyl micro pressings on his Pyramid label with help from artist Robin Page.

    VASSILIU, PIERRE

    Face B -1965/1981

    [engl]
“Qui c’est celui-là?” Many French asked themselves this question (“Who’s that guy?”) when the song bearing this title began to smash the hit parade in 1975. Some others already had parts of the answer: it’s the guy who sang “Amour amitié”! The guy who sang “La femme du sergent”! The guy who sang “Armand” in “Le Petit Conservatoire de Mireille”! To all those French, Vassiliu had always been reduced. Few were the real fans, who had explored all angles and taken the measure of the man. Vassiliu was – awful word – a poet. Even worse, he was an wandering entertainer. He wandered the world, bringing back words, sounds, instruments and feelings. Maybe his rhymes weren’t that rich, the instrumentation not too lush, the production quite laid-back and the timbre rather little demanding, but you could be sure the song would be pampered. Had anyone else taken care of it, it would have been worse. To make a good Vassiliu song, you had to be Vassiliu. The problem is, all this was nothing but a succession of misunderstandings. Because he continuously tried to remodel his career, from a chansonnier to a cunning singer, from tender to comical, to a beatnik poet, to an ethno-artist, to a venue manager, to a showman, to a barfly. 1961. Pierre Vassiliu, a horserider and a war photographer, embarks with his brother Michel (lyricist) in the music business.

    BROTHERHOOD

    Stavia

[engl] In 1972, Ohio based band THE BROTHERHOOD released their only album, "Stavia". It was a private edition of 200 copies, pressed at the legendary Rite custom plant. This rare album is a good example of US acid–rock / hippie psych with slight soul & funk influences: fantastic playing, swirling organ, powerful vocals, top guitar shredding, flute... "Stavia" has always been one of those shrouded in mystery albums, so rare that some collectors even doubted about its existence. Bootlegged in the ’90s in a butchered edition that included two songs from an unrelated band, here’s the first ever legit vinyl reissue.

    GRATEFUL DEAD, THE

It Crawled Out Of The Vaults Of KSAN 1966-1968 - Volume 1: Live At The Fillmore Auditorium 11/19/66

    [engl]
REPRESS! 2018 EDITION! This is a recording of a cult event, THE GRATEFUL DEAD live at the Filmore Auditorium on November 19th 1966. Recorded before their first album came out, this record features three primeval versions of tunes from their debut record and eight goodies, standards and originals, that were not featured on any official studio and live recording up to 1970?s ?Working man?s dead?. We are right there, on this magic night in November 1966 when psychedelic rock was still something fresh and exciting and the emerging hippie movement had not exploded yet. That came half a year later with the invasion of Haight-Ashbury. But these recordings are not only of historical importance, their musical value lies on an amazing level. The band smokes on stage throughout the performance. The sound is muggy for sure but each instrument comes through as it should and the simmering duels of guitar and organ make your head swirl. This album will certainly make the young generation of 60s music aficionados go crazy. A new beautiful cover artwork and some good work on the overall sound quality restoration make this album a joyful experience. And be sure, something like this 17 + minutes version of ?In the midnight hour? will have rarely hit your turntable. The overall atmosphere is just haunting.

    GÖKCEN KAYNATAN

    Gökcen Kaynatan

    [engl]
The missing component in the history of Turkish pop and one of the earliest exponents of Turkish electronic music alongside ?lhan Mimaro?lu and Bülent Arel, Gökçen Kaynatan electrified the rock and roll scene of the late 50s/early 60s – sending teenagers wild with his custom built guitars and back lines – helping charge the climate for the birth of Anatolian rock. Then, from the sanctuary of his private studio, he revolutionised the industry with his pioneering use of electronics whilst hanging the sonic wallpaper in the living rooms of an entire generation of telly addicts as in house composer of choice for Turkey’s first national television channel TRT 1. Despite having a modest discography of only four 7” singles to his name his influence is a major current that flows through over 50 years of Turkish pop culture. Compiled with unparalleled access to his private studio vault, Finders Keepers proudly presents the first-ever collection of Gökçen Kaynatan’s pioneering early electronic works. Featuring a selection of his experimental pop and rock recordings dating from as early as the 1968 it features both of the highly sought after 1 Numara singles – including a never before heard extended version of Evren – as well as previously unheard archive material and songs recorded for and broadcast exclusively on TRT 1 – most of them never to be repeated.

    CYMBELINE

    1965 - 1971

    [engl]
Previously unreleased DIY homemade psychedelia, teenbeat and fuzz-psych/prog by this amazing Swedish band, 1965-1971!! Tracks like “Third Image” or “Look at the stars” are an incredible find for anyone into US garage-psych (they wouldn’t sound out of place on any Pebbles or Psychedelic Unknowns volume!) and others like “Flicka”, “Stolta Vingar” or “Mittuppslag” are top notch ‘70s fuzzed out Scandinavian psych/prog. We can’t believe that such fabulous stuff has remained hidden in a carboard box until now. Formed in the industrial town of Norrköping in the mid ‘60s, Cymbeline (also known as Motala Ström and W&J) only released a 45 in 1971 before breaking up. But during their existence, the band recorded a lot of stuff, included here for the first time along with their rare 45. Cymbeline was basically two guys, Michael Journath and Anders Weyde, who met in 1965 while they both played in beat bands. They started recording songs at Anders little home studio with help with some friends and that’s how songs like “Imagination” and “Look at the stars”, amazing examples of homemade teen-beat, were born. At the same time, Michael and Anders were feeling a bit tired of playing cover versions with their beat bands so decided to start recording more experimental stuff, using armchairs and furniture as percussion, sounds from seagulls and birds, an electric cocktail mixer, improvising lyrics…these incredible experiments were recorded as “Images”, including the killer garage-psych sounding “Third Image”.

    C.A. QUINTET

    Live Trips 1971

    [engl]
Their 1969 album ?Trip thru hell? is one of the holy grails of late 60s heavy psych rock and certainly deserves to be rated this way by fans and collectors of that heavy rocking sounds. Due to the internet it easily made its way to the minds of a whole new generation of fans already. What awaits you here got recorded live, two years later than their cult debut. The record starts with a unusual BEATLES cover ?And your bird can sing?, originally from ?Revolver? in 1966. You do not even realize it is the said song until you hear a familiar passage. The C.A. Quintet turned it into a groovy, smoking hot organ driven power rocker with a melodic edge. With the second covertune ?Badge? originally performed by CREAM they stay closer to the original but play it with an increased powerlevel . Next ?Bayou jam?, a lengthy heavy rock song with psychedelic organ sounds that remind of IRON BUTTERFLY. If you cross them with BLUE CHEER in their prime you will get an idea. There is even a killer drum solo section in the middle of the song. Who said ?In a gada da vida?? Well, you definitely get to know where they got their inspiration from. ?4 am NYC? is another mid paced stomping heavy groover with a wickedly pounding approach and simmering guitars while the organs roar as a back up to the furiously distorted guitar.

    JEFFERSON AIRPLANE

It Crawled Out Of The Vaults Of KSAN 1966-1968 - Volume 2: Live At The Fillmore Auditorium 1966 & 67

    [engl]
Here we go with some awesome underground live material from one of the most important psychedelic rock pioneers in history of mankind. JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, ladies and gentlemen, in a very early incarnation when Skip Spence and Signe Anderson had just made way for the goddess of psyche Grace Slick on vocals and Spencer Dryden on drums to form what should become the classic line up leading this band to their huge success. Four of nine songs also appear from their cult album ?Surrealistic pillow? released in 1967, two more have appeared as part of ?Jefferson Airplane takes off? in 1966. There are later live versions of ?Fat angel? and ?Other side of life? on the 1969 live album ?Bless it's pointed little head? but these are the earlier, more rough edged and insane psyche out recordings of both beautiful pieces. Well, you get JEFFERSON AIRPLANE on this record, bare naked and honest to the bone. Just as they had been when they plugged in and played. The sound is amazing, raw and wild but clean and powerful enough to give every instrument and voice enough room to unfold. Technically not overwhelming but with a feeling of passion and dedication that only a true live recording can capture. And from every note that is played here you can feel the breath of the era where the cold war nearly turned into a very hot one and the world stood on the edge of a nuclear war while down in Vietnam .

COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH / THE BYRDS / MOBY GRAPE

It Crawled Out Of The Vaults Of KSAN 1966-1968 - Volume 3: Live At The Avalon Ballroom 1967 & 68

    [engl]
This series of live albums comes from the KSAN radio station vaults and features material recorded and broadcasted at several occasions at either the Filmore Auditorium or the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco during the years 1966 to 1968. Some of the hottest rock bands of the era got captured there on tape. Now we move straight to ?Vol. 3? of this series and it begins with a set of three songs by none less than COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH fronted by legendary singer / songwriter and former G.I. Country Joe McDonald who created the probably most notorious Anti Vietnam War tune ever, ?I feel like I'm fixin to die? which is unfortunately not included here. Three songs build the first half of the A Side of which the first two can be located on the studio versions on the 1967 albums ?Electric music for the mind and body? and ?I-feel-like-I-m-fixin-to-die?. The ?H ? Bomb ? Song? is a cool acid-gospel tune with a pure jam around the actual song. Next come THE BYRDS with another three tunes from their ?Younger than yesterday?, ?The Notoriouos Byrd Brothers? and ?Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde?, some very stoned announcements and a little discussion if they might play another song which in the end happens to the excitement of the audience. MOBY GRAPE whose founding formation featured Alexander ?Skip? Spence, former drummer of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE rage through a set of kicking power rock, psychedelic blues and jam tunes.

    Plastic People

[engl] Raw, in–your–face hard psychedelia with plenty of Vox and Hammond organ, hard guitar and powerful vocals courtesy of WILDWOOD. THE CENTURIONS (CENTURIANS)

Bullwinkle Part II: Surfers' Pajama Party Recorded Live On The U.C.L.A. Campus

    [engl]
Plus 6 Bonus Tracks! Some acts have a cult reputation such as THE CENTURIANS or THE CENTURIONS as they were originally called. In 1967 they changed their name to THE CENTURIANS due to legal reasons. It only matters on a minor base for the main point of interest is, that this killer tunes were originally released in 1963. Originals fetch prices of 200 US$ in semi-nice condition and due to their appearance in the classic 90s Tarantino movie ?Pulp fiction? this band gained a cult following of younger people who kept their legacy alive and even brought them to reform for a second career which lasts until today. You can definitely hear that this is a Californian band. But they seem to come from the darker, windier and dirtier part of the beach where only overly tattooed bikers get their willing victims laid and the rough sea craves for the lives of daring surf maniacs. The music is surf rock'n'roll but different to most of the fluffy good time party bands. The bass guitar plays a mean line with all the tunes to give 'em a bent out of shape spine at which the beats of the drum, the desperately howling saxophone and the gloomy twangy guitarmony get tightened with rusty wire. The performance here is excellent, the musicians belong to the best of their genre.

    KYU SAKAMOTO

    Sukiyaki And Other Japanese Hits

    [engl]
If you are curious how Japanese pop music sounded in the early 60s, here is one of the most popular examples. So this reissue will hopefully open new channels for fans of abundantly orchestrated 60s pop to listen to Kyu Sakamoto, who sadly perished in an aircraft accident in 1985, which is up to now the biggest event of its kind in flight history. Anyway, what do we get to hear from this man, very young but already experienced at the time? Mysterious, soulful songs with big orchestral arrangements, tunes that show elements of latin music such as bossa nova, typical elegant Doo Wop and pop ballads of the day with a heartwarming melodies, some exotic tunes that draw influence from what western people might consider Japanese music, real or fictional. The most popular tune that became a hit all over the world is certainly ?Sukiyaki?, which was a big success in a German language version by THE BLUE DIAMONDS, a Dutch band of Indonesian origin. He did not spare any style popular in the 50s up to the early 60s. You'll hear elements of chanson among many others. The whole album is relaxed and beautiful with a friendly expression. The orchestra, the big band, whoever accompanies Kyu Sakamoto dresses all the compositions sung with passion and a pliable voice into a garment of absolute elegance.

    ANT TRIP CEREMONY

    24 Hours

    [engl]
Some albums just exist due to the fact that the band is about to break up and with that knowledge in their mind the members wish to capture at least a tiny bit of the magic they created playing their stuff at rehearsals and concerts. These kind of of albums are way more personal like a picture book of memories than records made for the commercial market. '24 hours' by ANT TRIP CEREMONY is such an album recorded by a bunch of high school students soon to part ways after their exams. It is nearly impossible to get hold of an original of which only 300 copies existed. Fans of late 1960s jammy psychedelic rock and dreamy folky singer / songwriter style tunes will go crazy for this collection of songs. Among them you find coverversions of Eric Andersen, a well known singer / songwriter of the day, Allen Toussaint, a famous songwriter, producer and soul musician, Billy Roberts, who wrote the ultimate rock classic ?Hey Joe? as well as a couple of contributions of people close to the band next to a handful of originals. The band had a quite unique expression while their overall style fitted well into their era. Some more or less intense but never really heavy rock songs, some mellow tunes that make your spirit drift away into gardens of delight painted in surrealistic colours.

    NEW TWEEDY BROTHERS

    The New Tweedy Bros!

[engl] 100% uncut psychedelia and garagey, jangly folk–rock from 1968 Originally from Portland, the New Tweedy Brothers were formed by brothers Fred and Danny Lackaff plus Dennis Fagaly and Steve Ekman. In 1966, they relocated to San Francisco, where they were part of the exploding, nascent psychedelic Ballroom scene, influencing none other than Jerry Garcia and sharing stage with bands like The Warlocks (pre–Grateful Dead), Quicksilver and Big Brother among others. Upon returning to Oregon, they self–released in 1968 their only album, housed in a striking hexagonal, over–sized silver foil cover, now a holy grail between psychedelic collectors. Innocent vocal harmonies, fuzzy bass, jangly guitars, raga sounds...

    SAVAGES

    Live'n Wild

    [engl]
1965 and 1966 were the years when the underground at last exploded and first influences of psychedelia were showing in the music of many nowadays hardly remembered cult bands such as THE SAVAGES originating from the Bermuda islands. Along three 7" singles the band only released one full length record in 1966, “Live'n'wild”, recorded live at the Hub, a nightclub part of the Princess Hotel in Hamilton / Bermuda. The sound quality is quite awesome and the interaction with the audience brings quite a few very entertaining announcements next to a collection of great tunes, three of them cover versions. This album all in all is absolutely rare. It is hard to find any original copy at all. But here we go with a brand new reissue that brings back the original album to a garage beat loving audience. Strangest point here is the song “He's a man”, a cover version of Icelandic 60s rockers THOR'S HAMMER with lyrics in English written by THE SAVAGES. “We gotta get out of this place” by THE ANIMALS was quite an obvious choice for a young garage band to include in their live set, the third cover version on this album is a more powerful rendition of THE DRIFTERS' “On broadway”. Nice choices but only the icing on the cake for the self penned tunes presented a band that was up on the same level as most of the more popular garage beat heroes of the day and with “The world isn't round, it's square” THE SAVAGES had written one of the most wicked proto punk orgies of their era that became one of these cult tunes that are the reason a band survives in the memory of at least a few die hards over the decades and it still sounds fresh and furious while the great “Quiet town” for example is an early psychedelic pop tune.
