[engl] 15 complete insane bands plays 15 Outrages earbleading tunes from recent or upcoming albums Flamenco and Blues Trash meets Exotica Space Cumbia and wild Rock’n’Roll Garage Chainsaw Punk Neanderthal Synth NEW RELEASE PICK: V/A, Voodoo Rhythm Label Compilation Vol. 5 (Voodoo Rhythm) This Swiss label is run by Beat Zeller, aka The Beat-Man, aka The Reverend Beat-Man, aka a beautifully twisted cat if ever one was (though we’ve never met). Burrowing into a stylistic zone that’s not far from the great Billy Childish, except it’s swampier and more bluesy (and with flashes of strangeness that are almost Beefheartian), The Beat-Man has been cranking out steaming hot hunks of rant and distortion since the 1980s, with the Voodoo Rhythm label commencing operations in 1992 to document his own prolificacy plus records by those of a similar temperament. The discography now runs well into the hundreds. As I’ve only been soaking up Voodoo Rhythm’s wares for the last 5-6 years, I haven’t heard it all, but it’s still been long enough to have gotten acquainted with a sizable percentage of what’s on this comp. Chances are you haven’t, so let’s give it a rundown. Right up front, there’s the garage-punk stomp of the Beat-Man’s band The Monsters, followed by the drum-box punk thud of the Bad Mojos, and then some trash dumpster Troggs action from Destination Lonely. There’s the reverb drenched punk-blues throb of Sloks, a zonked busker-billy Venom cover by Rev. Beat-Man and Izobel Garcia, the demented retro-pop of Garcia’s own track, and then a strong dose of Chess Records-inspired punk pound by Trixie and the Trainwrecks. And with the Tom Waits vibes of Degurutieni, things get even more interesting. There’s the decidedly KBD-like track by Nestter Donuts, an ode to well-lubed onanism by Sex Organs, the acid-bent Gibson Bros. fumes of Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle, a fuzz-punk rave-up by The Devils, the twisted trio chug of E.T. Explore Me, the moody, dare I say goth blues of Honshu Wolves, and a Jimbo Mathus-like closer by The Dead Brothers. And it’s all grooved into a picture disc. My normal reaction to picture discs is to stick those fuckers on the roof, but this one looks pretty cool. It sounds even better.

[engl] Vinny Earley is the brain (floating in a jar) behind the LA based band Vaguess. You might have seen him around. He's pretty tall, kind of looks like a mix between Hulk Hogan and Bart Simpson and is probably standing in the corner of a house party flicking lit matches at the wall, and talking about how GG Allin wasn't even really that gross. In reality, Earley would more likely be seen surfing, skating, telling a hilarious fart joke, or ripping guitar or drums in one of a handful of heady bands in the LA scene like Diode, 2m8o, and Scam Likely. Vaguess, however, is Vinny's lifeblood. Since 2012, the band has released a dozen or so LPs and EPs, touring extensively with a rotating cast of Earley's close buds building a cult following. Vinny fearlessly traverses genres, seamlessly switching between glitchy synth punk, jangly art rock, and twangy cowpunk melded together with his singular approach to songwriting, production, and unique voice. On his latest release Thanks No Thanks, Vaguess joins forces with ETT embarking on an odyssey of bigger and bolder production, infectious melody, and introspective songwriting propelled by dialed, head-bobbing rhythms. With Thanks No Thanks, the vibe of the music shifts in controlled bipolarity as the songs flow from snotty punk tune to heart-felt ballad to dancy Indie banger. The music on this record, however, is uniformly grounded by taut drumming, angular riffing, and tunneling synth arrangements. Earley's singing style pings from more spoken, punctuated post-punk vocals to ringing, belted choruses. The lyrics feel personal, like he's working through feelings of love lost, spiritual devastation, and deep conflict with society’s inequities explored through Earley's poetic, sardonic lens. These narratives careen through the album with the help of densely arranged instrumentation and engineering magic cooked up in Earley's own homespun studio. This album is best enjoyed with headphones as the music thoughtfully swirls in stereo sound. Vaguess delivers a diverse pallet of modern rock sounds as a uniform and cohesive piece of art. Thanks No Thanks has something for nearly everyone- eggheads and spikey cretins alike. And while Vinny may not look like The Hulkster or Bart Simpson or do any of that other stuff that was said initially, he more importantly continues to contribute his singular and exciting rock n roll vison to the punk zeitgeist with a new Vaguess Record.

[engl] Quite simply one of the hardest working bands in contemporary punk and hardcore, Vanilla Poppers are back with their most urgent material to date. Following an excellent 2017 LP on Lumpy, 3/4 of the original lineup relocated from Cleveland to Melbourne, Australia, home of vocalist Christina Pap. The four new tracks on "I Like Your Band" find the Poppers on top of their game, driving home hook-laden punk hits beneath Pap's ruling vocal presence. And what's more? The band's gritty, live charm is captured at its best here by Billy Gardner (Ausmuteants, Antifade Records) and dialed in on the mix by Mike Gill (Perverts Again, Cruelster). A near-perfect EP delivered with the precision and attitude of first wave 70s PUNK and executed with the style and confidence that few contemporary acts possess. "I Like Your Band" comes packaged in a glue pocket sleeve with artwork from William Chapman plus lyric insert and download code.

[engl] The best rock’n’roll doesn’t faff about. It gets straight in there and gets shit done. This is an ethos Vanilla Poppers seem to have taken to heart – formed the very day Melbourne-hailing singer Christina Pap arrived in the town of Cleveland, Ohio, they’re a pointed blast of too-busy-to-give-a-fuck rawness and vital urgency. Punk rock doing what punk rock does best, basically: getting to the point with noise and purpose, leaving your dazed but exhilarated ears to pick up the pieces afterwards. Their I Like Your Band 7” is a testament to that – never less than scintillating, at least partially thanks to garage-soaked riffs that are never less than heroically, bottom-shakingly addictive. You’ll wish you’d thought of the hook to opening track Get Away From Me, even as it makes you wanna regress to a primal state and do dumb stuff like chew on broken glass to see how long it takes you to bleed. In fact, Rocket From The Crypt would be proud of most of the guitar work on display here, although with Pap on hand to dispense her proclamations via a hardcore holler, it’s plain to see they’re making their own mark rather than walking in anyone else’s shadow. Tired of the same old three-chord stodge? Need a palette cleanser to wash away the taste of so much stale punk? Vanilla Poppers are the perfect solution; a spittle-flecked rush of blood to the head that’ll remind you why you fell in love with this music in the first place. Meet your new heroes. [engl] A lost episode of Fawlty Towers set in the present day astride a shoddy sofa in a den in Brooklyn: Instead of not “mentioning the war” the challenge is to swim through this LP without uttering or even entertaining the tiniest sniff of dearest Nanker Phelge. This proves far more rewarding than throwing a knee-jerk ticker tape parade for the open-tuned greyzone murk of Guitar-Centre blues musicians everywhere and frankly, that would be a lazy disservice to what you're about to hear. Rising up instead, we have the grandiose and pampositical return of the perfectly named, Vanity. Yes that’s a compliment, no it's not a real word. Energetic punk consommé indebted to rock and roll but coming across less like the deliberate broken chains of Vans slip ons and Target 501s swapped for sequins, strides, and scarves - but more like an effort forged in Billy Zoom’s living room on Warren Zevon’s gear as played by the Saints’ roadies in a bar that serves really, really, really cold beer. Coincidentally, I would endorse that as a suggested serving. Take a long hard look in the mirror, slyly lit so your cheekbones pop, and preen yourself ’til your skin peels off.

[engl] Brand new 7" from 'Bay Area Punks, Violence Creeps, after an 12" on Total Punk, a recent LP and a bunch of demos, here we have four songs, alternate version of 'Sex Dwarf off the Total Punk 12", a couple of songs that appeared on the demo tapes and a brand new song. Violence Creeps are raw, destructive, fucked off and in your face. Reminding me in parts, Flipper and Black Flag but WAY angrier. This is the sound of your summer on fire.

[engl] Two albums and a few tours later, the gang is about to make its come back with its third album ‘Glimpses’. Quite like the sketches appearing on Emma Kadraoui’s artwork, this new album lets the auditor ‘glimpse’ at the recording process, as unfinished tracks, tape recording sounds or odd mixing ideas were left in the album for all to hear. And yet, ‘Glimpses’ turns out as the band’s strongest, most cohesive album, perfectly  encapsulating the band’s own personnal vision of pop music.

[engl] The Watchout Sprouts is a innovative avant-garde and new wave band from Portugal. Their sound is an explosive mixture coming out of a super-group of musicians from such bands as Les Baton Rouge, The Great Lesbian Show, Ideas For Muscles and The Dirty Coal Train. The band was formed in 2010 in Lisbon.
